The present invention relates to ypens which may be employed either withl an ordinary pen holder or with a holder of the fountain pen type. i
There is considerable variation in the kind of pen preferred by different individuals. Some people, in writing, bear down heavily on the pen, while others bear lightly onthe pen, and alpen which would Suit one person isy often either too stiff tor notstiff enough toj suit another. Furthermore, a pen which is satisfactory to the user Lwhen writing upon one kind of paper mayjnot write properly when used upon a difierent kind of paper.-
Thexpresent invention has for its objecty to provide a 4pen in which the flexibility of the writing pointV may be varied .tosuit the requirements of. the fuser. 1 i A further object is to provide a pen capable 20 of retaining y'av greater quantity of ink Vand requiring less frequent dipping than the ordinary pen. vl .V v
With the above and other objects in view the vinvention may be said lto comprise the 2:5 pen as illustrated in the accompanying drawings hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the appended claims together with such modifieations and Variations thereof as will be apparent to one skilled in the 30 art to which the invention appertains.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming apart of the specification in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a pen embodying the Vinvention; Fig. 2 is a 'f section taken on the line indicated at 2-2 .in Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4 are a bottom plan view and a top plan view respectively, of a modified form of the invention; Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sections taken on'lines indicated at 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7 respectively, in Fig. 4; Fig. 8 is a top plan view illustrating another form Which the invention may assume.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, there is shown a pen having a concave body portion 1 which tapers toward its rear end and a point 2 of the usual form which may be Split centrally to provide the usual writing nibs 3. A clasp 4 fits over the body portion 1 of the pen and has its opposite edge portions bent nwardly at 5 over the edge portions of the concave body 1 to secure the clasp to, the Ybody portion of: the pen. Thek clasp 4'may be slid longitudinally along thebody portion 1 and,'.as it is moved toward the point 2, the clasp 4 will be gradually brought into tighter gripping engagement with the body to eXert an inward pressure uponthe opposite edges of the pen increasing the curvature thereof so that there will be a greater resistance to flexing movements of the point and body' and the pen will be made stifer. To increase the stiifness of the 'pen the clasp 4 is adjusted toward the point of the pen, and to make the pen more flexible the clasp 4.is adjusted away from the point of the pen. In order to prevent the claspy 4 from becoming detached from the pen a rivet 6 may eXtend through an opening in the clasp 4 and througha longitudinal slot7 in the body portion of the pen. The longitudinal slot 7 will permit the longitudinal movement of the -clasp 4 necessary to ladjust the pen'to the desired degree of'fiexibility.
In Figs. 3 to 7 of the drawing a modified form of theinvention is illustratedfbywhich a greater variation in the flexibility of the pen may be'obtained. and by which the ink retaining capacity of the pen is increased. In this modification the body portion 11 of-the pen is tapered towards its rear end and the point 12 maybe divided and provided with the usual writing nibs 13. A flexible rein- 'forcing member 14 is securedfupon vthe top of the pen and this' reinforcing'member has a vshape whichV corresponds lsubstantially to that of the pen. The reinforcing member 14 has a rearwardly tapering concave -body 15 which is somewhat narrower than the body portion 11 of the pen and which may have a greater transverse curVature, so that the opposite edges of the reinforcing member 14 I rest-upon the top of the body portion 11 of -12 of the pen'and is normally spaced a slight distance above the point 12. The point 16 of thereinforcing member terminates short of the writing point of the pen'so that theV point of the pen only is used in writing. The rear end of the reinforcing member is secured to the rear end of the pen by means of integral tongues 17 which eXtend from the edges of the body portion 11 at the rear end thereof and are bent inwardly over the opposite edges of the reinforcing member 14. WVhen the point of the pen is pressed against the paper, it will be bent upwardly toward the point of the reinforcing member 14, and as the said point approaches the reinforcing V member the resistance to further bending movement will be greatly increased. The reinforoing member 14 also provides a reservoir for ink between the under Side thereof and the upper surface ofV the pen, and this ink will be gradually fed to the nibs of the pen during the writing operation.
Means is 'also provided for varying the. flexibility of the pen and to'this end a clasp 18 similar to the clasp 4 above described, is provided which embraces both the body portion ll of the pen and the body portion 1,5 of the reinforcing member. By adjusting the clasp 18 toward the point of the pen, the
opposite edges of the body portion ll are crowded inwardly increasingfthe stifiness of the point 12, and at the same time the reinforcing member 14 is crowded toward the main pen reducing the space between the pen and reinforcing member and further increasing the stiffness of the pen.
In either of the modifications described, the clasp embracing the body portion of the pen may be easily and quickly adjusted to a position such that the desired degree of flexibility is obtained by pressing'thelsame along the pen either with a finger nail or with the blade of a pen-knife.
The form of 'the invention illustrated by F ig. 8 is very similar to that of Fig. 4 except that the pin and slot connection of Fig. 1 is utilized, the pin being designated by numeral 19 and the slot by numeral 20.
HavingV described my invention, what I claim is:
1.'The combination with a penhaving a point and a tapering concave body, of a clasp having a sliding fit with the sides of the body .and adjustable thereon to eXert a varying pressure on the body to vary the stiffness of i the point.

The combination with a pen having a tapering concave body and a point at one end, of'a resilient reinforcing member of a shape similar to that of the pen, said reinforeing member being shorter and narrower than the pen and'being seoured at its rear endV to the rear end of the pen,'and a clasp slidably embracing the body of the pen and the reinforc-l ing member and adjustable along the body of the pen to hold the reinforcing member against the pen with varying pressure and'to vary the stiffness of the pen". V
