IMPROVEMENT IN DOUBLE CORN-PLCWS'.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,21 2, dated March 21, 1876; application filed January 22, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W. A. VAN CAMP, of Metamora, in the county of Franklin and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new` and useful Improvements in Double Corn-Flows; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. m

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a double corn-plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de'A scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- 4 Figure 1 is a plan vieu of my corn-plow. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.

A A represent two bars .or beams, con-I nected at their front ends, forming what is known as a split tongue. These bars or beams are connected to an arched axle, made in two sections, B B, overlapping each other in the center, as shown in Fig. l, and, connected. together by clamps O C surrounding them and fastened by set-screws c a, which allow of the two sections Vbeing contracted and expanded at will. The beams A A are fastened to the upright portions of the axlesections by means of staples b b and by braces d d to the lower horizontal portions of the axle-sections, the rear ends of said braces being connected to the axle by elipse e'.

To each axle-section are connected two plow-beams,E E, the front ends of which are fastened to a flat plate, D, having two or more sets of holes for the passage of the fastening-bolts fr, so that the beams may-be adjusted up or down on-sai'd plates as required.

Each plate D forms, at, its front end, a lugor projection, h, which is pivoted by a vertical bolt, i, between the ends of a band or clamp, G, passed around the lower horizontal portion of the axle-section between the vertical part of the same and a lug, Y, thereon. By these means the plows can be raised and lowered and turned to either side as required.

H H are the wheels placed on the ends of the axle-sections B B.

By having the arched axle made in two sections and adjustably connected together, the plows may be spread apart or contracted together as is required for the kind of work to be done. To accommodate the split tongue to such changes, the front end thereof, or in other words, the front ends ofthe beams A A, are fastened together by a wire loop, m, and a wedge, I, is driven from the rear forward between the ends .of the beams, as shown in Fig. 1.

I am aware that the broad ideaof a divided and extensible axle-tree is not new; hence, I disclaim such as my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a cultivator, an arched axle, made in two sections, B B, overlapping each other in the center and adjustably connected together by clamps O and set-screws a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination ot' the adjustable axlesections B B, beams A A connected thereto by staples b b and braces d d, with clips e e, the wire loop m, connecting the front ends of the beams, and the wedge I, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
