March 25, 1930. G. F. SHAW I GOLF BAG SUPPORT Filed April 20, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Hlll- @Wlmw ATTORNEY WiTNESS:
Patented Mar. 25, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE F. SHAW, OF MAYFIELD, KENTUCKY GOLF-BAG Application filed April 20,
This invention relates to improvements in golf bags and has for an object the provision of means which may be detachably or permanently associated with a bag to support the latter in convenient position for removal and replacement of the clubs.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a bag supporting means which may be normally held in inactive position against the side of the bag, or extended so as to support the bag for the purpose above mentioned, means being provided whereby con tact with the ground will extend the supporting means, while said supporting means will be automatically returned to its normal position when the bag is lifted.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to
be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a golf bag with the invention applied and shown export folded against the bag.
tended for use, a portion of the invention being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Figure 3 is a front view showing the sup- Figure 4 is a section on Figure 1. p
Figure 5 is a similar view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a golf bagwhich may be of the usual or any preferred construction, the invention being applicable to golf bags of any type. As is usual, the bag includes a handle 11', a sling 12 and a ball pocket 13.
The invention includes arcuate-shaped at-. taching members 14 and 15.1 These members may be permanently attached to or form a part of the bag structure, orthey may be removably attached by means of straps 16 and buckles 17, so that the device may be manufactured and sold independently of the bag.
the line of SUPPORT 1928. Serial No. 271,515.
The attaching member 14 has pivotally secured thereto as shown at 18, supporting legs 19, the said legs having their upper ends relatively close together and their lower ends spread apart so as to provide a more stable support for the bag.
Rigid with the attaching member between the upper ends of the legs 19 is a socketed member or sleeve 24. This sleeve extends at right angles from the attaching member 14 and slidingly receives the inner end of an actuating rod 25, between the inner end of which and the inner end of the sleeve is positioned a spring 26 whose function is to force the rod outward. The opposite end of the rod is mounted for sliding movement in an enlarged portion 27 carried by the attaching member 14 and the extremity of this rod is provided with a head 28 for limiting its inward movement.
Pivotally connected with the rod 25 as shown at 30 are the inner ends of links 31, while the outer ends of these links are pivotally connected as shown at 32 with the legs 19, so that the position of the rod 25 will control the position of the legs.
Normally, the spring 26 forces the rod 25 outward or downward into position to move the legs inward against the bag as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawings. When it is desired to bring the supporting legs into position for use, the bag is placed upon the ground so that the head 28 first engages the ground. The rod 25 is then moved inward and upward which, through the medium of the links 31 and their connections with the rod 25 and legs 19, extends the latter outward to the full line position shown in Figure 1.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the invention provides convenient means for supporting a bag in position for the insertion and removal of the golf clubs, and that the means provided may form a permanent part of or an attachment for the bag, the constructionproviding a cheap, eflicient and ractically automatic supporting device, an as the will add very little to the weight of the bag.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is here'- in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended clalm.
Having described the invention what is claimed is p In combination with a golf bag, a pair of arcuate-shaped attaching members adapted to be positioned at opposite ends of the bag, legs having their upper ends pivotally se cured to one of the attaching members, a sleeve rigid with and extending from said member between the points of pivotal attachment of the legs, aspring influenced rod having one of its ends slidingly mounted in the sleeve and its other end mounted-for sliding movement in the other attaching member and normall extended beyond the end of the bag, and lin s having one of their ends connected with the rod and their other ends conencted with the legs.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE F. SHAW.
