LAWN CHAIR Filed J u1y 5, 1943 Patented Aug. 7, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCE' I LAWN CHAIR Henry H. Wenneborg, Springfield, Ill. Application J ul! 5, 1943, Serial No. 493,563
1 Claim.
My invention relates to camp chairs; and has for a purpose to provide certain improvements in collapsible lawn chairs, camp chairs and the like, which will permit the chair to be lifted from one place to another without becoming disassembled; and, also, permit the chair when assem-- bled to be definitely depended upon not to slip out of joint or in any manner become disconnected unintentionally when once it is properly assembled.
A further object of my invention is to provide a lawn chair wherein its construction and manner 01' assembly provides a safe, substantial, neat, and convenient lawn chair.
A particular purpose of my invention is to provide novel and practical improvements in lawn chairs. with such improvements adaptable to under the notched chair legs.
practically all types of collapsible lawn chairs,
and wherein the supporting legs of the chair, with theusual spaced notches for holding the adjustable seat structure in selected positions by a cross rod resting in the notches, and by providing a pair of slidably adjustable underhanging hooks carried by the cross rod, permitting them each to be slidably moved outwardly on the cross rod to engage the under side of the notched chair supporting legs, preventing the cross rod and seat structure of the chair from slipping out of the notches while the hooks are engaged. Along with this practical and convenient hook construction, I provide not only a roller at the chair top for holding the fabric of the 'chair with holding pins to prevent the roller from turning; but, I provide an elastic connection between the above men tioned hooks and the fabric holding roller, which, in its operation will have a tendency to auto-- matically and resiliently urge the hooks into their holding positions, and simultaneously urge the roller holding the fabric to rotatably bind or rip the pins that hold it from turning, when someone is not sitting in the chair.
I attain the objects of my invention by the device described in this specification, recited in the claim, and illustrated in the drawing, where- V in like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the figures: I
Figure l is a perspective of an assembled lawnchair provided with my invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective showing as a detail, the operative connection 01 one of my holding hook members, which secures the chair in as;
sembled position.
Figure a is a perspective detail 'of the fabric roller at the top of the chair, with the jelastic pivoted to front legs l0 and II.
' wardly on this rod I.
Figure 4 is a detail showing the operative position of one of the hook members.
Figure 5 isa perspective of the chair clamping hook of my invention.
I shall now describe the practical and salient features of novelty to be found in my invention, as I point out its operating details, its structural conveniences, permitting the economical improvements which I claim for my device.
For instance, in a lawn chair I, having pivotally connected arms and legs, and a fabric seat 2, I provide a pair of parallel supporting legs 3 and 4, provided with notches 5 and 6,-respectively, for the support of a cross rod 1, in selected pairs of such notches, which supports the upper seat structure of the chair, by means of struts 8 and 9, Arm rests l2 and [3 are pivoted to struts 8 and 9.
Thus, when the upright struts 8 and 9 pivotally engage legs l0 and II, respectively, by the top ends l4 and I5; and, when the upright supports l6 and I! for arm rests 2 and I3 are pivotally connected with legs 3 and 4, and legs I0 and H at points l8 and IS, the folding chair joints are established.
When the chair is assembled as shown in Figure 1, it will be noted that cross arm I slidably supports a pair of hook members 20 and 2|, which are identical in construction, but are respectively mounted on this cross rodso that the free'ends 22 and 23, respectively, thereof, will hook in under the bottom edges 24 and 25, re-- spectively, of the notched legs 3 and 4, when these hooks 20 and 2|, are made to slide out- It will be then noted that rod 1 will be firmly held in position in a pair of opposed notches 5 and 6, of legs 3 and 4, respectively; and, while 5 thus held in its firm position of. assembly," the entire chair will not collapse when lifted by hand to be moved. 5'
It will. be obvious that notches 26 in hooks 20 and 2|, may be made to slidably engage a screw head or nail head 21 secured to rod 1 adjacent each end,'to hold hooks 20 and 2| in place when the" chair is unlocked from its assembly by them.
I provide as a feature of convenience and novelty in my invention, an elastic rubber or spring member 28, which. at one end, is secured to the outer top end 29 of hooks 20 and 2| as they extend down through guide eyelets 36 on .struts 8 and 9; while the top end 3| of elastic member 28 extends through transverse holes 31 in roller 30; and, by the other end of the elastic, I engage roller 30 in a manner permitting the free resiliency of the elastic thus connected, with its upper end 3| rolled about roller 30, and the lower end of elastic 28 is secured to the outer end 29 of -hooks20 and 2|, respectively, to automatically urge hooks 20 and 2|, outwardly on rod I into engagement with notched legs 3 and 4; and, at the same time, automatically urge a rotation of roller 30 in its bearings on arms I!) and II, so that this roller will always resiliently and rotatably bind against pins 33 which are carried in holes 34 or legs l0 and II, to engage transverse holes 35 (not shown) in roller 30, to keep the roller from turning.
When a person is sitting in this lawn chair causing his weight to pull down with a rotating stress upon roller 30, then pins 33 will prevent the rotationof roller 30; but, when th person gets up, pins 33, not having any binding stress, upon them, would tend to become loose, it it were not for the resilient pull of elastic member 28.
Thus, elastic member 28, when attached at one end to roller 30, where it is wound about the same, and attached at the other end to the top outer terminal 29 of hooks 20 and 21, respectively, will automatically serve the double purposeof holding the hooks, and holding pins 33 in'place.
Having thus described the nature of my invention, what I claim 'is: I
A lawn chair constructed to provide a pair of parallel, forwardly and downwardly sloping front legs connected together by cross rods and a pair of parallel rearwardly and downwardly sloping 'rear legs pivotally connected therewith and connected together by cross rods, a top cross bar rotatably carried adjacent the top rear ends'of said front legs and a fabric seat adjustably supported thereon at its top end and Secured at its bottom forward end to a cross rod at the front of they rear legs; said rear legs provided with a plurality of pairs of transvrsely aligned notches spaced along the upper rear portion of said rear legs and a cross rod selectively adjustable to seat into selected pairs of said notches, a pair of upright struts respectively pivoted to said forward sloping front legs and secured to respective ends of said cross rod by their lower ends, a pair of hook members slidably supported adjacent opposite ends" of said cross rod and carried on said cross rod in a position to provide an underslung hook clamp for slidably moving outwardly on said cross rod and hooking transversely under said rear legs respectively to hold said cross rod into said notches when placed therein, said hooks each having an outer top hole defined therein, an elastic member anchored in each end of said top cross bar, coiled about said bar and extendin therefrom downwardly along said struts respectively, engaging said, holes in said hooks respectively, and guide eyelets spaced along said struts to hold said elastic members in position to urge said hooks outwardly on said cross rod to hook under said rear legs.
