My invention has for its object to provide a self-adjusting interlocking weather strip device for the lock side and top -of a single easement or swingable sash or for the meeting stiles and top of a double Casement or swingable sash.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices and Vcombinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
The purpose of my invention is to provide interlocking engagement of weather strip members for hinged or swinging sashes so that shrinkage of sashes will automatically adjust the relative position of the weather strip members without strain. One member of the Aweather strip is yieldingly held and made of non-spring tempered metal and hence, tends to remain in position in which it is left when the sash is open, so that the members engage with very little. friction* when the sash is again closed. This yieldingly. held member is provided with a caniacting entrance passage arranged to be engaged by the other member and be readily drawn thereby into position if, for any rea-V son, said yieldingly held member has been moved out of position while the sash is open.
One style of interlocking equipment now on the market for easement or hinged sash consists of rigid members without Vadjustment for sash shrinkage andtherefore pulled loose on their vnailings by shrinkage or bent ont of shape through failure toengag properly in closing sash. Another style now on the market consistslof onerigidmember arranged to interlock with a spring tension hook member. The spring tension: in combination with the interlocking engagement causes excessive friction in opening andl closing the sash, making the sashhard to operate and, by constant pressure against the rigid member, loosening the rigid member on its nailing, thus permitting leakage of, air between the weather` strip andthe sash to which it is attached.

Referring first to the inventionV as shown in Fig. 1, the numeral 3 indicates the stile at the lock side of a Casement hinged for horizontal swinging movement and the numeral 4 indicates a lock liamb rabbetted at l5 to receive said stile. This stile 3 at the corner formed by the outer edge and side thereof is rabbetted at'6. Y
The weather `strip device includes a frame or j amb element or member 8 and a easement or swingable member/. The member 7 comprises a primary U-shaped feld that affords along narrow tongue 9 Vand asecondary U- shaped'fold that affords wide groove l0. These two folds are laterally spaced, reversely extended, and mounted substantially entirely within the `rabbet- `6. The outer side of the tongue 9 has an extension which forms an attaching ange 11 that overlaps the vertical outer edge of the stiley 3 and the outer side ofthe fold forming the groove lO-'has' an outturned laterally projecting attaching flange 12 which overlaps the outer faces of the stile 11; Nails X, as shown, are provided for securing the vattachingianges 11 and 12 to the stile 3.
The member 8 is ofthe same general formation.v as the member 7 and includes a primary U-shaped fold that affords a groove 13 for 1 the tongue, 9 and a secondary U-"shaped fold further extension that adords an Aattaching flange 17 that extends parallel to the tongue 9. This` attachingV flange 17 bears against the jamb 4L and is secured thereto by nails Y,
only one of which is shown. On the outer side of the tongue 14 is a laterally and inwardly projecting extension that aords a flange 18 which slidably rests on the striking face of the jamb 4 and its free longitudinal edge portion extends into a kerf 19 in said jamb.
It will be noted that the cam-acting surfaces 15 and 16 are in outwardly diverging relation the latter in advance of the former to afford a converging entrance passage for the groove 13. The frictional contact between the flange 18 and jamb 4 is such as to hold the member 8 where positioned by the member 7 during the closing of the Casement.

In case the member 8 is moved after the casement has been opened the tongue 9V during the-closing of the easement will strike either the cam-acting surface 15 or 16 and automatically position -said member 8 to receive the member 7 for interlocking engagement there- Vwith. It will be noted that the member 7 has three point wiping contact with the member 8 and thereby forms weather-tight joints at these points between the Casement and jamb. The kerf 19 prevents the leakage of water around the fiangeV 18. The member 8 by its single attachment to the jamb 4 at the flange 17 will yield to compensate for shrinkage or warpage. of the Casement or jamb.
rlhe Stock from which the elements 7 and 8 are formed is relatively stiff with just sufficient spring to keep their shape. It will be noted that the transverse portions-of the tongues 9 and 14 are rounded so that they will freely enter the grooves and 13, respectively. The widthof the entrance passage -16 is such that the tongue 9 will always enter the same during the closing of the Casement irrespective of the amount of warpage, expansion or contraction of thecasin@ and jamb or the distancethe member 8 may be moved when said Casement is open, thus making the weather strip device self- Y adjusting under all conditions.
` rlhe invention shown in Fig. 2 is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 1 and is applied to the meeting Stiles 2O of a pairof casements hinged for horizontal swinging movement. The only differencebetween the weather strip device shown in Figs, 1 and 2 is that the attaching flange 17, shown' in Fig. 2, is in the form of an angle. A bearing strip 21 for the flange 18`takes the place of theV striking face on the amb 4and isapplied to the right hand easement. This bearing strip 21 is attached by nails Z to the outer face of the right hand easement and is laterally of@- set therefrom to leave a groove 22 between said flange and Casement. The opposing faces ofthe meeting stiles areA reversely rabbetted l for vinterlocking engagement, when closed, and a rabbet'23 is formed in the left handcasement for theweather strip device.
The weather strip member in Fig. 2, might f also be reversed, installing-member 8 on the sashes and is therefore not the preferred installation. l/vater is stopped practically at the outside or weather face of the easement 1n the preferred installation as shown in Fig. 2.
The weather strlpdevice for the head or top frame memberv for a single or double easement will be like that shown in Fig. l. The word sash is herein used in a broad sense to cover any type of swingable member.
, What I claim is:
1. A. weather strip device for a pair of members, one of which is relatively stationary and the other of which is relatively swingable, said weather strip comprising a pair of self-adjusting interlocking elements applicable one to each of said members, one of said elements having a primary U-shaped fold and a secondary U-shaped fold which are laterally spaced and reversely extended, the outer side of the-secondary fold having a laterally projecting flange that has sliding contact with a partA on the respective member, the other of said elements being in the form of a tongue arranged to be pressed into the primary fold of the other element'with a wiping contact.
2. vA weather strip device for a pair of members, one of which is relatively stationary andV the other of which is relatively swingable, said weather strip comprising a pair of self-adjusting interlocking elements applicable one to each of said members, one of said elements having a primary U-shaped fold and a secondary U-'shaped fold which' are laterally spaced and reversely extended, the outerside of the secondary fold' having a `laterally projecting flange that has sliding contact with a part on the respective member and extends into a kerf between said part and member.
3.- The structure defined in claim 1 in which the tongue is in the form of a U-shaped fold.
4. rlhe structure defined in claim 1 in which the outer side of the primary fold and the inner side of the secondary fold are shaped to form a converging cam-acting entrance passage forL the primary fold.

A weather strip device for a pair of members, one of which is relatively. stationary and the other of which is relatively"k swingable, said weather strip comprising a pair ofinte'rlocking elements applicable one to each of said members, each of said elements having a primary U-shaped fold and a secondary U-shaped fold, the folds of each element being laterally spaced and reversely extended, the primary and secondary folds of theelementy on the swingable member being arranged, the former to be pressed into the primary foldof the other element and the latter to be telescoped ontothe secondary fold of said other element.
6. The structure defined in claim 5 in which the outer side of the primary fold and the inner side of the secondary fold of the element for the relatively stationary member are shaped to form a converging cam-acting entrance passage for the primary fold.

8. The structure defined in claim 5 in which the folds of the two elements have three point wiping contact.
9. A weather strip device for a pair of members, one of which is relatively stationary andV the other of which is relatively swingt-able, said weatherstrip comprising a pair of self-adjusting interlocking` elements applicable one to each of said members, each of said elements having a primary U-sliaped fold and a secondary U-shaped fold, the

A weatherstrip device for a pair of members, one of which is swingable, comprising a pair of self-adjusting interlocking elements applicable one to each of said members, one of said elements being formed from a single' piece of material and having a U-` shaped fold with outwardly diverging side port-ions, said element having the fold being attached at one side of its fold to the respective member and holding the fold spaced therefrom to permit lateral movement thereof, said element on the other side of its fold being loose and unattached, the other elements being in the form of a tongue arranged to be pressed into the fold, the element having the fold being formed from an inert material, whereby the tongue by its engagement
