.The invention relates to multiple lift screw jacks and one object of the invention is to provide such a jack in which all threaded parts will be protected.
A further object of the invention is to provde such a jack having a plurality of cham'- bers to contain lubricant.
A further object of the invention is to proA vide suoli a jackA with means whereby the Operating crank may be applied to Vone part thereof to aotuate the jack andto another part thereof to lift the jack as a whole, to place the same under the part to be lifted.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the jack is described in detail. In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 isa side elevation of a jack embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken centrally through such a jack.
In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention but itv will be understood that this particular embodiment has been chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that the parts may take vari-y ous forms and may be arranged in various ways without departing from the spirit of p the invention. v
As here shown, the jack comprises a hollow standard 1 having an enlarged lower portion 2 constituting a base. The upper portion of the standard is cylindrical andisv provided with internal screw threads 3f Mounted within the threaded portion of the standard and engaging the threads thereof is an axially movable member,.which is preferably in the form of a nut 4, adapted to travel lengthwise of the standard. lRigidly secured to the nutte is a screw 5, which, in the present instance, is hollow and has an un threaded lower portion G extendingthrough the nut 4 and rigidly secured thereto, as-by means of a pin 7, thus causing the nut and the screw to rotate in unison. Mounted for axial movement to the standard is a hollow llifting element 8 the lower portion of which Consequently Y will move axially of the standard with the nut ,and the rotation of the screw Will cause the lifting element to move axially with relation tothe nut, thus providing a multiple lift for the lifting element. Interposed between the standard and the lifting element is a sleeve 10 which has axial movement with t-he nut and which is so connected with the standard as to beheld against rotation therewith and is so connected with the lifting element las to hold the latter against rotation with relation to the'- sleeve. Further, this sleeve cooperates kwith parts carried by the standard and the lifting element to limit the outward movement of the 'sleeve and nut with relation. to the standard and'to limit the outward movement of the lifting element is provided in one side with a longitudinal v slot 11 into which extends a stud 12 mounted in-thestandard l near the top thereof. ,The sleeve has a second slot 13 which, in the present instance, is arranged opposite the slot 11 and into which extends a stud, such asa screw. l

Rigidly secured to the actuating-bar 15 and arranged within the base 2 is a beveled gear 16 with which meshes a beveled pinion 17 Vjournaled Ain a bearing 18 in the sidewall of the base` and having at its outer end a squared stud 19 adapted to re ceive a socket 2O carried by an operating;
member or crank 21. Obviously the rotation of this crank when applied to the stud 19 will actuate the gear 16, screw 5 and nut. 4, thus imparting axial movement to the lifting element.
It is often necessary to place a jack of this kind under a part to be lifted which is more or less diiicult of access, such, for example, as the axle of an automobile. In order that the jack may be conveniently lifted as a whole and moved into its proper position with relation to the part vto be lifted I have secured to the standard`1 a stud 22, which, in the present instance, comprises the enlarged head of the stud 12. This Studis adapted to receive the socket20 of the operating crank 21 and isgso arranged that the jack may be conveniently lifted by the crank Y. It will be-'noted that the arrangement of the mechanism is such as to provide a series of :chambers adapted vto receiveV lubricant. Foriexample, the base and the hollow lifting element lmayfboth contain lubricant andV lubricant'may also be placed in the standardbetween the lifting'element and the nut. In thismanner the several operating parts are tlioroughlylubricated.at all'tirnes and there islittle,'if any, tendency for thegrease to Vwork out to the exterior of the jack.

In a lifting jack, a hollow standard having internal screw threads, a nut rotatably mounted in said standard and engaging the threads thereof, a hollow lifting element mounted for axial movement in said standard and having an internally threaded portion, a hollow screw engaging the threaded portion of said lifting element and having a portion extending through and rigidly secured to said nut, an actuating bar extending into said screw and held against rotation with relation thereto, and means for rotating said bar.
