It is an object of the present invention to provide a multiple purpose jack which is particularly adapted for permanent mounting on automobiles and road vehicles.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a jack which may be used for a multiplicity of purposes.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a jack devoid of exposed threads.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a jack having efiicient lubrication therewithin and wherein the lubricant is not lost when the jack is extended or retracted.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a jack bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, is easy to use and efiicient in operation.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in Which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the invention shown in operative use and permanently attached to the chassis of a vehicle;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the jack shown alone;
Fig. 3 is a transverse horizontal sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a transverse horizontal sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, represents a hollow cylindrical casing open at both ends and integrally formed at its upper end with a hollow cupshaped enlargement 11 having an internally threaded upper end 12. The casing 10 and the enlargement 11 at one side are integrally formed with a hollow cylindrical, laterally extending portion 13, this extension having an enlarged portion 14 adjacent the casing and enlargement, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower end of the casing 10 is enlarged, as at 15, and is provided with an annular groove therebelow.
A hollow externally threaded cap 18 is screwed into the upper end of the cup-shaped enlargement 11, being formed with a shoulder 19 which limits its downward displacement thereon.
A hollow cylindrical sleeve 20 is rotatably mounted within the casing 10, being internally threaded as at 21. To reduce friction intermediate the sleeve 20 and casing 10, the casing 10 has an enlargement of its bore, as at 22.
The upper end of the sleeve 20 extends slightly above the bottom wall of the cup shaped enlargement 11 and is integrally formed with a beveled crown gear 23, the internally threaded bore 21 extending through the gear 23 and having screwed therein a hub 24 which supports on its upper surface a ball bearing assembly 25, the hub 24 being secured to the gear 23 by means of the peg or grub screw 26. A drive shaft 29 is rotatably mounted within the bearing member 27, being formed at its inner end with a bevel gear 30 located within the pocket 14 and in mesh with the crown gear 23. The outer end of the drive shaft 29 has an angular extension 31 to which a suitable source of power (electrical, mechanical or hydraulic) may be applied.
A vertical guide rod 32 is positioned within and depends from a central opening in the cap 18 being secured therewithin by means of a peg or gmb screw 33, the guide rod 32 extending downwardly through the ball bearing assembly. 25, hub 24 and extending downwardly within the sleeve 20 into the lower end thereof.
The lower end of the sleeve 20 at the inside thereof is formed with an inwardly extending flange 34.
A second hollow cylindrical sleeve 35 slidable within sleeve 20 and having an internally threaded bore 36 is integrally formed at its upper end with an externally threaded enlargement 37 which engages the internally threaded portion 22. An externally threaded plug 38 is screwed into the upper end of the enlargement 37, being secured therein by means of a grub screw or peg 39.
The plug 38 is provided with a central hexagonal bore therethrough which slidably receives a correspondingly the hollow shaft 40 at its upper end being integrally formed with a flange 42 adapted to limit its downward displacement through the plug 38.
The internal diameter of the flange portion 34 of the sleeve 20 is slightly greater than the external diameter. of the sleeve 35 and positions a gasket 43.
The sleeve 35 at its lower end is integrally formed with a flange 44 which receives therethrough a hollow cylindrical sleeve 45 having a hexagonal internal bore 46 which slidably receives the hexagonal outer surface of the hollow shaft 40, the upper end of the shaft 45 being integrally formed with an'extern'ally threaded enlargement 47 which engages the internally threaded portion 36. The internal bore of the flange 44 is greater than the external diameter of the shaft 45 and mounts a gasket 48 which slidably receives therethrough in close engagement the shaft 45.
The lower end of the shaft 45 is externally threaded and is screwed into the internally threaded central portion 49 of a foot or supporting plate 50 having the reinforcing ribs 51.
The plug 38 is provided with an oil opening 52 while the plug 47 is provided with an oil opening 53, lubricating oil being provided intermediate the walls of sleeves 35 and 20 whereby the moving parts are continually lubricated.
A collar 54 slidable along the hexagonal shaft 40 is secured thereto on the undersurface of the plug 38 by means of a set screw 55, preventing the sleeve 40 from becoming separated from the sleeve 45 which would foul the movement of the latter.
It will be noted that the rotate with the sleeve 35.
In operation, with the sleeves 45 within the casing 10 with only the foot 50 protruding, the drive shaft 29 is rotated by any suitable means, for example a brace and bit with the bit holder engaging the angular shank 31. If desired, a flexible shaft may be fixedly connected to the drive shaft 29 and having an angular extension mounted in a suitable area of the vehicle may be employed. Rotary movement of the drive shaft 29 and 35 telescoped collar or plug 37 is free to is transmitted to :the crown gear 23 through the bevel which rotates the sleeve 20 within the casing 10.
The rotation of sleeve 20 is transmitted to the sleeve through the threaded enlargement 37 thereof. The ro tary movement .of ithfi .sleeve .35 causes .the :internally threaded portion 36 to act upon the externallythreaded enlargement '47 which, however, being slidable;longitudinally along .the .hexagonally shaped shaft 4.03s prevented from angular rotation and therefore .moves longitudinally along the threaded portion 36 downwardly. This movement will continue until the sleeve 35 is fully extended with the externally threadedenlargement 47 inabutment with theflanged portion 44. .At this .pointthe continued rotation of the sleeve .20 causes the externally .threaded enlargement .37 tomove longitudinallydownwardly along the internally threaded portion 21 carrying the sleeve .35 therealong, at the same time drawing .the hollow shaft downwardly along the guide rod 32 until the parts eventually reach the extreme extended position of Fig.
2, at which point the externally threaded enlargement a 3.7 engages the internally flanged portion 34 of the sleeve 20. By reversing the rotation .of the drive-shaft 29, the .above operations will be reversed .to retracttheparts.
The jack construction described can be employed for all operations which would otherwise be performed hydraulically and may .be particularly designed for heavy duty, when desired. For example, thejack may be employed .for straight pushing, clamping or pressing, .for transmitting .forces by cables, for applying a torque to a shaft, to'transmit power to a distant point, to actuate toggles, in combination .Witha cam to liftloads, in combination with a first class lever, for reducing straightline thrust, for use with a bent lever, .for use with .a third class lever, for transferring motion to a distant point, for turning a gear with a rack .and by :means of two jacks hooked up to yield .four positive positions.
The jack may also be employed with-automobiles and other vehicles, as will be obvious. The jack .may be placed under a special bracket midway on either sideof the car.
The jack may also be employedas part of azpermanent jack system of vehicles .as .shown in Fig. .1.

The jack will normally be carried with the vehicle in a retractcd position, and upon the application of electrical, mechanical or hydraulic power to the angular extension 31 of the drive shaft, the footSl] will be lowered to the operative position of Fig. l.
The casing 10 may be housed within an outer cylindrical casing 63 suitably secured thereto along its bottom wall and integrally formed "at its flipper end with the shelf gportion 64, the casing 163 having .an opening within which is positioned the extension 13 and outwardly through which extends 'the extens'ion 31.
It will be noted that during operation of the jack no threaded portions are exposed and that the lubricating oil is prevented from being lost during expansion and retraction of the jack.
