The concrete slab 1 1 may then be placed and when the cement has set, the nuts on the bolts 15 may be loosened as the frame 12 will then be supported by means of its flanged upper end 12 upon the concrete slab.
It will now be-readily apparent that where- ,as the frame 12' is confined within the ring 11 it is free to go up and down with the slab l l due to the freeengagement'ot thebolts 15 within the slots 1%.
It will also be noted that the collar or -While'the term manhole has been used throughout the above description it is obvious that the same problems exist in other structures than those technically known as manholes, as for instance in catch basins or wherever there is a lined cavity below the paving slab, accessible through an opening in the paving slab which opening is provided with a trafiic supporting cover either imperforate or in the form of a grid or the like. It is intended that the term manhole as used in the claims shall be construed accordingly.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a structure of the character described, the combination of a surrounding wall structure forming a manhole and containing an opening in its top, a cover-platesupporting hollow member open at its opposite ends and forming a continuation of the opening in said wall structure and free of support by said wall structure, a concrete slab in which said member is located, and means supporting said member on said slab, said member and slab being capable of downward movement as a unit relative to said wall-structure.
2. In a structure of the character described, the combination of a'surrounding wall structure forming a manhole and containing an opening in its top, a cover-platesupporting hollow member open at its opposite ends and forming a continuation of the opening in said wall-structure and free of support by said wall structure, a concrete slab in which said member is located, means supporting said member on said slab, said member and slab being capable of downward movement asa unit relative to said wall structure, and a mass of relatively yieldable material between said slab and thetop of said surrounding wall-structure.

In a structure of the character described, the combination of a surrounding wall struc ture forming a manhole, an annular positioning ring positioned on the upper edge of said wall structure, a cover-plate-supporting hollow member open at its opposite ends, said ring and said member telescoping and said member being free of support by said wall structure or ring, a concrete slab in which said member is located and vertically spaced from said ring, and means supportingsaid member on'said slab. t
5, In a structure of the character described, the combination of a surrounding wall structure forming a manhole, an annular positioning ring positioned on the upper edge of said wall structure, a cover-plate-supporting hollow member open at its opposite ends, said ring and said member telescoping and said member being free of support by said. wall structure or ring, a concrete slab in which said member is' located and vertically spaced I from said ring, means supporting said member on said slab, and a mass of relatively yieldable material between said slab and said rin 6. In a structure of the character described, the combination of a surrounding wall structure forming a 'manhole, an annular positioning ring positioned on the upper edge of said wall structure, a cover-plate-supporting hollow member open at its opposite ends, said ring and said member telescoping and said member being free of support by said .Wall
structure or ring, aconcrete slab in which said member is located and vertically spaced from said ring, means supporting said member on said slab, and means temporarily supporting said member in fixed position on said 8. A manhole cover structure comprising,
in combination, a hollow cover-plate-supporting member open at its opposite ends, a ring adapted for support by a manhole structure, means for anchoring said member in a paving slab and serving as the sole support of said member in service, and means for temporarily supporting said member on said ring during the placing of said slab, said last-named means being adapted for release from suppoigting relation after the placing of said sla 9. A manhole cover structure comprising, in combination, a hollow cover-plate-supporting member open at its opposite ends, a ring adapted for support by a manhole structure, means for anchoring said member in a paving slab and serving as the sole support of said member in service, and means for temporarily supporting said member on said ring during the placing of said slab, said lastnamed means being adapted for release from supporting relation after the placing of said slab and said ring and member being adapted for telescopic action in service.
