CLIP APPLYING TOOL Filed May 17, 1928 U N I T 1 GUSTAV O. BRANDT, 013 DETROIT, IVEICHIGAN', ASSIGNOR TO L. A. YOUNG SPRTNG WIRE CORPORATION, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN v STAT P T NT OFFICE."
CLIP-APPLYING TOOL Application filed May 17,
The main object of this invention is to provide a plier-like tool for use in applying connecting clips for parts of spring structures, the tool being particularly designed for the oining of a coiled spring tie member to a connected part.
A further object is to provide a tool of the class described for applying clips, which is adapted to simultaneously offset one of the members united, thereby preventing longitudinal movement of such offset member relative to the clip.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved tool.
Fig. 2 is a detail view partially in longi tudinal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 3.is a detail view corresponding to that of Fig. 2 with the tool closed.
Fig. 4: is a detail view partially in transverse section on line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of a spring structure for the assembly of which the tool illustrated is well adapted.
In the embodiment illustrated in the drawing my improved tool comprises a pair of jaw members 1 and 2 connected by a pivot 3 and provided with handles 4:- A spring 5 is connected to the handles and acts to normally open the tool.
The jaw members are provided with aws 6 and 7 having outwardly curved faces 8 and 9 respectively. The jaw 7 is provided with stepped shoulders 10 at the ends of its face disposed in planes at the outside of the planes of the sides of the jaw 6.
The faces 11 of the jaw members between their aws are forwardly curved, these curves being complementary and merging into the curvature of the faces of the jaws with the reverse curves.
The work illustrated consists of coiled springs. The clips 12 illustrated are formed 1928. Serial No. 278,575.
of wire and are in the form'of a. loop having the bight portion thereof folded upon itself and lying in spaced relation to the arms of the loop. The arms terminate in forwardly curved bills so that the clips may be placed in the jaws as shown in Fig. 2, i
The parts to be connected in the embodiment illustrated consist of'helically coiled body springs 13 and the coileds'pring'tie members 14. These parts are arranged in relation to the clips as shown in Fig. 2 [and the tool is closed, clamping the clip upon the parts to be connected and at the same time off setting the portion 15 of the tie member em braced by the clip as, is clearly shown in Figs. 4and5. a
As the jaws are closed the shoulders 10 e n-[ gagethe coils ofthe tie members which lie adjacent to the coils embraced by the cli so that such coils are securely held by the c osing ofthe jaws thereon. A
This offsetting of the'parts engaged'by the clip provides shoulders or stops so 1211311511011 gitudinal movement of the member 14; within the'clip ineither direction is prevented. 7 While Ihav e especially'designed'the tool for the application of clips'in spring struc tures such as shown in Fig. '5, it is desirable foruse in applying'other forms of clips; that is, the clip maybea sheet metal stamping with the'sarne result frdin the offsetting. Further, thetool may beadapted for apply- I V ingclips to" and offsettingtie members other than coiled spring tie members.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe such modifications as it is believed the disclosure made will enable those skilled in theart to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A tool of the class described comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaw members provided with handles and with jaws having opposed outwardly curved faces, one of th jaws having forwardly projecting stepped shoulders disposed in planes at the outside of the planes of the sides ofthe other jaw,v
said jaw members having complementary fori uo wardly curved work supporting faces between the jaws merging into the curvature of the jaws with the reverse curves.
2. A tool of the class described comprising a pair of pivotally connected jaw members provided with handles and with jaws having opposed outwardly curved faces, oneof the jaws having forwardly projecting shoulders disposed at the ends of and in planes transverse to its curved face and at the outside of the planes of the sides of the other jaw.
3. A tool of'the class described comprising a pair of coacting aw members provided with jaws having opposed outwardly curved faces, one of the jaws having forwardly projecting shoulders disposed in planes at the outside of the planes of the sidesof the other jaw, said jaw members having complementary forwardly curved work supporting faces between thekjaws merging into the curvature of the jaws with the reverse curves.
' V with jaws having opposedoutwardly curved i faces; one of the jaws having forwardly pro-- the jaws with the reverse curves- 4, A tool of the class described comprising aipair, of c'oacting jaw -members provided with jaws having opposed outwardly curved faces, one of the jaws having forwardly proj ecting shoulders disposed at the ends of and in planestransverse to its curved face and at the outside of the planes of the sides of the other -jaw-.; r fig 5. A tool of the class described comprising a pair of. 'coacting jaw members provided with jaws having opposed outwardly curved faces; one of the jaws having forwardly proj ectingshoulders at the sides of its face, said jaw members having complementary forwardly curved work supporting faces between the aws merging into the curvature of 6. Atool of the class described comprising a pair of coactingjaw members provided jectin'g shoulders at the ends ofits faceand in planes transverse to its face.
Inwitness whereof I have; hereunto set my" hand. j GUSTAV O'. BRANDT.-
