Patented Mar. 18, 1930 PAT'ENT OFFICE GUSTAV RICHARD CARL, f'OF CHICAGO, AILLINOIS WINDOW CONSTRUCTION 'Application filed April "29,
My li'rvention f relates 'to window 'construe tions,andlmoreparticularly to improvements in"window5ssuch as that shown in my prior applcationSerial No. 225,744. n
.The jprincipalpurpose of this invention fis to ,provide ai novel means vfor connecting the hinge pins at ftlfiefhinged` side Vof the window soasito facilitate theoperation of the-window when `it is-desiredito .swing it about ka horizontalaxis.
Itis a further-purpose ofthis'invention to provide .such a construction in which the'unsightly elements of the hardware used in 'mounting Vthe window are so arranged as .to
be substantially hiddenlfrom view.
Other objects and advantages ofthe `invention 'will 'appear as vthe description proceeds, in connection with the accompanying drawings.
-It isvto be understood, however,that I do not intend to limit myself to the details shown and described, but that -I intend to avail-myselfof all such modiications as Vwould occur toene-skilled inthis'artand as fall within the scope ofthe claims.
-In the drawings,-
Fig. 1 is a front 'view vofa window such as shown in my priorapplication, withthe improvements hereinbei'ore Amentioned thereon;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section onthe line SH3 offFig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of `.F ig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is an enlargeddetail section of one of the hinges. Y. A Referring now in detailto the drawings, I show at 6 a window casing in ywhich the window 7 is so mounted, as will be hereinafter more fully described, as to be swingable about both a horizontal and vertical axis. Within the window 7 there is also'slidably mounted a sash 8 which swings with and forms a part of the main window 7, as is clearly brought out inV my prior application.
kIt will be noted Vthat certain brackets, as indicated at 9, 10 and 11, `are secured to the casing 6 and provided with sockets to receive the hinge pins 12, 13and 14, which hinge pins also pass through the sleeves 15, 16 and 17 that are mounted, respectively, on the 1929. Serial N0. 358,967.
bracketsl'S, 19'and'20. The brackets 18'and 20, as shown, aresecured to the window 7 in such vmanner'as to be'concealed fro'mfthe interior'of the room in which the windowiis mounted by means of the overhanging lip portion 21, which extends completely around the frame'ofthe window 7. Bracket 19, of course, carries Valso the locking member 22 forlocking the'sash 8in various positions, so that this bracket is exposed onthe face of the window. w
'The hinge pins 12,13 and 14,in'the normal position,'of course, hinge the window so that it may be swung'about a vertical axis. 4Now, however, when it is desired to tip thewindow about a'horizontal axis, pins 13 and 14 are so arranged that they may be removed from the sockets on the brackets 1()` andv 11, and the pin 12 is 'adapted to be adjusted in such amanner as to co-operate 'withtheiixture illustrated at 23 to form means for permitting'a limited' 'amount of swinging movement of the window about its lower edge. v
r Now,if it werenecessary to vreach tothe top of the window'to lift up the pin 14'eacli time the window is to be swung outwardly about a horizontal axis, considerable difficulty would be 'encountered'in-tlie operation of the window. In order to avoid this difficulty, pins 13 and 14`are connected'by means of a. rod 25, which, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, extendslaterally from the pin 13 into a 'slot 26 provided along the side edge of .the frame of the window 7 ,and then upwardly in this slot, as shown clearly at 27 in Figs. 1 and 3, to a point a short distance below the sleeve 17 of bracket 20. At this point the rod 25 extends outwardly again substantially horizontally, as at 28, and then vertically to connect with the lower end of the pin 14. The socket in the bracket 11 is, of course, provided with a slot 29, which is slightly larger than the diameter of the rod 25, so that when the pin 14 is elevated this rod may pass outwardly through the slot.
The rod 25, being concealed throughout the greater portion of its length, presents no unsightly appearance, and at the same time performs its function efficiently by maintaining the pin 13 in the proper position to be easily lifted by the hand of the person opening the window.
The horizontal portion 28 of this rod also co-operates with a stop 30 mounted in the groove 26 to limit the upward movement of the pins 13 and 14 so as to prevent moving these pins laterally out of the sleeves 16 and 17. v y
The pin 12 has a stop member 31 thereon, which, in one position of the pin 12, is adapted to slide in the keyway or groove 32 of sleeve 15 so as to permit the pin to pass into the position shown in Fig. 1. Now, however, in preparing the window for swinging abo'ut its horizontal axis, the pin l2 is lifted to bring the stop 31 above the top of the sleeve 15, and then the pin is turned to bring the stop out of alignment with the groove 32, which properly positions the round disk-like head 33 provided at the end of the reduced extension Se of this pin, so that this disk-like head 83 will engage in the slot 35 provided in the bracket 9.
lVith the pin in the uppermost position just described, the reduced portion 34 may then swing outwardly into the slot 3G to the position shown in Fig. 5, thus permitting the window to swing about its lower edge outwardly away from the casing 6.
'lhe fixture 23, of course, with the co-operating bracket v211, operates in substantially the same manner as that shown in the prior application, and, of course, suitable latching means may be provided, as in this prior application, for holding the window in partially open position.
It will be noted, however, that the actual operations which much be performed, even in swinging a large window such as this outwardly at the top, are comparatively simple and easy to perform. All that is necessary is to properly place the elements 23 and 24 into contact with each other, lift and set the pin 12 as described, and then, by grasping the handle of the pin 18, lift both pins 18 and 14: out of their respective sockets in the casings 10 and 11. The window is then free to swing outwardly at the top through the limited distance allowed by the securing means at the bottom and any latch means that is provided.
From the above description, it is thought that the construction and advantages of this device will be clear to those skilled in this art, and having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described, a window casing, a window and means connecting said window to said casing for swinging movement about a horizontal and about a vertical axis comprising hinge members at one side of said window having pins movable from a position permitting horizontal swinging of said window to a position permitting swinging of said window about a horizontal, and means connecting a pair of said pins, said means being concealed in the frame of said window between said pins.
2. A device of the character described, a window casing, a window and means connecting said window to said casing for swinging movement about a horizontal and about a vertical axis comprising hinge members at one side of said window having pins movable from a positionpermitting horizontal swinging of said window to a. position permitting swinging of said window about a horizontal, and means connecting a pair of said pins, said means being concealed in the frame of said window between said pins, and stopy means on said frame cooperating with said connecting means to limit the movement of said pins.
3. A device of the Acharacter described, a window casing, a window and means connecting said window to said casing for swinging movement about a horizontal and about a vertical axis comprising hinge members at one side of said window having pins movable from a position permitting horizontal-swinging of said window to a position permitting swinging of said window about a horizontal, and means connecting a pair of said pins, said means being concealed in the frame of said window between 'said pins, one of said hinge members having means limiting the swinging of said window about a horizontal axis.
et. A device of the character described, a window casing, a window and means connecting said window to said casing for swinging movement about a horizontal and about a vertical axis comprising hinge members at one side of said window having pins movable from a position permitting horizontal swinging of said window to a position permitting swinging of said window about a horizontal, and a rod connecting a pair of said pins, said rod being concealed in the frame of said window betweensaid pins.
5. A device of the character described, a window casing, a window and means connecting said window to said casing for swinging movement about a horizontal and about a vertical axis comprising hinge members at one side of said window having pins movable from a position permitting'horizontal swinging of said window to a position permit-ting swinging of said window about a horizontal, and a rod connecting a pair of said pins, said rod being concealed in the frame of said window between said pins, and stop means also concealed in said frame cooperating with said connecting' rods to limit the movement of said pins.
6. A window construction of the character described comprising a window hinged to a casing by hinge members certain of which have readily separable elements, and another of which has one socket member provided with a reduced Wedge shaped interior groove extending from one end, and a, transverse slot intermediate its ends, and a hinge pin provided with a, disk shaped portion at its lower end for engagement with said slot and a reduced portion adjacent said port-ion for engagement n said groove.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 18th day of April, A. D. 1929.
