Description

March 11, 1930. H. D. RALSTON 1,750,492
ELECTRICAL ELEMENT Filed May 28. 1928 ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES T OFFICE HURLEY D. RALSTON, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOB OF FORTY PER CENT TO ROBERT J". BLUIW, OF RIVER- FOR-EST, ILLINOIS I ELECTRICAL ELEMENT Application filed. May 28,
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in electrical elements of the type adapted to produce heat or light and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eflicient in use and economical in manufacture.
It is among the objects of my invention to provide a device of the above mentioned type which will be arranged so as to embody a very high degree of efficiency.
A still further object of the invention is to arrange the device in such a manner that the radiation therefrom shall be increased and be directed in but a single direction while radiation in other directions will be prevented by an insulating section formed as part of the device.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
- The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a preferred form of construction for my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the de vice as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In the drawing wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated 10 indicates a base which in the present instance comprises a shell member 11 that is filled with a suitable insulating material indicated by 12. In the present instance the shell member 11 is arranged so as to embody screw threads 13 so as to facilitate the mounting of the device in an electric socket but it is to be understood that the screw threads 13 might be displaced 1928. Serial No. 281,277.
inset substantially bowl shaped portion 17. It will thus be seen that the portions 16 and 17 and the upper side of the base 10 co-operate to provide a closed chamber 18 from which air is preferablywithdrawn in order to create .55 a vacuum therein. If desired the chamber 18 may be filled with a suitable insulating material and it is therefore apparent that the area defined by the portion 17 may be surrounded by an eiiective insulation except on the open 6.0 side thereof. The portion 17 is preferably formed to be substantially spherical, or if desired parabolical in shape. It will thus be seen that the portion 17 provides a substantially bowl shaped arrangement that embodies an open upper side and which includes a portion that is inset from this open upper side.
Mounted in the bowl shaped portion defined by the portion 17 at the point which is inset from the open upper side in the greatest amount I mount a heating element 19. It is to be understood that a. lighting element might be substituted for this heating element or any other desired electrical mecha-- nism. In the present instance I show the conductors 20 and 21, adapted to supply elec tric current to the element 19, as being directed through the chamber 18 and connected in the manner well understood in the art to 8 the base member 10, the conductor 20 being connected to the shell member 11 while the conductor 21 is connected to the end portion '22 that is insulated from the shell member '11 as indicated at 23 in the drawing. It is' to be understood, however, that the conductors 20 and 21 might be directed around the of my invention.
In operation, current is supplied to the element 19 so asto cause rays to be emitted therefrom. These rays will pass out through the open upper side of the portion 17 being so directed by the shape of the portion 17. In order to facilitate this directing of rays from the element 19 the parabolically shaped portion 17 might have the surface thereof, disposed toward the element 19, coated as by so-called silvering or otherwise arranged so as to facilitate the directing of the rays. Since the rays will all be guided so as to pass in one direction as set forth heretofore it is apparent that the efficiency of the device will be greatly increased and therefore a greater nt of h at or lig wi be em t d r m the open side of the portion 17 than would be directed in a given direction if the element 19 were not so mounted;
While I have "illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is Q tPa-ble of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variation and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
20 .Having thus described my invention what 'I' claim is new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is r 1. A device of the character stated including a substantially bowl-shaped portion haves ing another bowlrshaped portion fitted into the open side thereof, a base member, means for connecting the base member to said first named portion whereby an air tight chamber may be defined between said portions,-an electrio element mounted in said second named portion at the inward-most disposed section thereof, and means for connecting said element to electric contact portions on said base member, said base member having connect- .3.5 ing portions provided thereon to permit the irliauntingthereof in an electricsocket or the e.
2. YA device of the'character stated includ ing a substantially bowlsshaped portion hav- =40 ing another bowl-shaped portion fitted into the open side thereof, a base member, means for connecting the base member to said first namedportion whereby an air tight chamber may he defined between said portions, an electrio-element mounted in said second named portion at the inwardrmost disposed section thereof, said base member having screw threads provided on the periphery "thereof, an electrical conductive shell mounted over if) said base member congruent to the screw threads thereon, an electric contact mounted on said (base member and insulated .fromsaid shell, and means for connecting said element to said shell member and said electric contact. V
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
