PATENT OFFICE A SSIGNOE, BY EESNE ASSIGNMIENTS, TO
VORTEX CUP COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, CQBPOBATION BOLLED-EDGE-GOlll'E our Application filed June 2, i927. Serialll'ol 195,895. 7 i
This invention relates to an improved type of conical a aper cup constructed of a blank similar in iorm to that covered in my Patent No. 1,610,192, dated December 7, 1926. The cup of this invention is formed oi a quadrantal blank adapted to be formed upon coni cal rollers which actto roll the blank and secure the overlapping edges together by means of a cementitious material, said rollers constructed so that during the forming of a cup an arcuate edge of the blank is de fiected outwardly toiorm a rounded edge or margin facilitating drinking from said cup. is an object of this invention to provide a conical paper cop the upper edge of which is bent outwardly during the forming of the cup to form a edge.
It is an important object of this invention to provide a conical drinking cup adapted to be constructed from a quadrantal blank by means of conical formers or inandrels, one of which is provided with suitable means whereby the arcuate edge of theblank during the formation of the cup is deflected or rolled outwardly to provide a drinking lip or rim facilitating drinking from said cup.
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawings.
This invention (in a preferred 1501111) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:
cup embodying the principles of this invention. V
Figure 2 is atop plan view thereof.
tion of the cup taken outline III- Fi re 2.
shown on the drawings: The p'aper cup comprises a cone 1 made cal man radial edge 3, and a substantially straight Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentargisec- I of mandrel is adapted to coact. The cup is formed from a that illustrated 111 my Patent No. 1,610,192 and has an arcuate edge 2, a slightly curved seam forming edge 4, which is positioned at a considerable angle with respect to the radius and merges at one end with a curved edge of a projections?) which is used to reinforce the tip of the conical cup when formed; The
quadrantal hlanlr similar to conical forming mandrel is provided with a peripheral wire or head so positioned that when a blank is wound on the forming man- 7 drel, said wireor head will act on the arouate edge or margin of the blank to roll or deflect the same outwardly to form a drinking edge or flange 6 shaped to conveniently lit over the lower lip of a person using the cup to facilitate drinking from the cup with out any danger of receiving a cut or ingury from a sharp straight edge or margin often resulting horn use of cups having a straight drinking edge. The hlanlr is provided Witha'suitalole cementitious-material on a portion of one surface thereof, permitting the overlapping margins to he secured together.
The important feature of the present conical cup resides in the novelmanner in which the arcuate edge of the cup blank is rolled r or defleted outwardly by means of the wire or head on the forming cone or mandrel dur- I ing the cup forming operation so that said arcuate edge of the blank forms the deflected i 7 ing hem the cup. The rolled drinking edge of the cup is adapted to he produced simply without necessitating any crimping or bending over of the margin of the cup blank which forms the upper edge of the finished cup.
I am 'aware that many changes may he madeQand numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting Fi ure 1 is a side elevation'ot a conical or mued'edge which greatly facilitates drink? l the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
A conical drinking cup constructed of'a' blank of substantially quadrantal form shaped to permit overlapping of two of the margins thereof, and means for securing the overlapping margins together, said quadrantal form having one edge thereof deflected during the formation of the cup to form a substantially plain peripheral drinking edge above a curved section.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name at Chicago, Cook County,
Illinois.
CESARE BARBIERI.
