attached to the container and body portion vide a container of above the upper score lines, which collar is adapted to enter the body for reclosure after the rip strip is removed.
A further object of the invention is to prothe above type with an integral band disposed below the upper score line and formed by a folding of the wall of the body ortion.
A still fiirther object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein said body portion has an inwardly extending bead serving as a stop shoulder on which the collar rests during reclosure.
In the drawings 1 is a side view of a container embody- Flim t e 1mprovements.
ig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the container with the end applied and before it is joined to the body b a double seam.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to ig. 2, but showing the body and end joined by a double seam, and the upper edge of the collar permanently secured to the end and bodyportion.
Fig. 4 is a view showing the rip strip torn away and the cover removed.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing a slightly modified arrangement of the folds in the body wall formingthe band.
The. invention is directed to a container having a body portion to which the ends are joined by double seaming. The wall of the body is preferably folded before the side edges of the blank are joined to form the body so as to provide an integral band adjacent one end of the body. This band may be formed by the folding of the body wall inwardly or outwardly. The body wall is scored along lines parallel with each other and above the lower edge of the band. The score lines are located a suflicient distance from the upper end of the body so that the upper score line is just below the double seam. The body is also provided with an inwardly projecting bead adjacent the lower end of the integral band. Located within the body of the container is a collar which extends from the flange at the upper end of the container body to the shoulder formed by the inwardly projecting bead. The lower edge of this collar is preferably rolled into a curl. The upper edge of the collar is curved outwardly. slightl and nests against the body wall at the ange therein. The cover is provided with the usual depressed central portion and with a flange which is rolled with the flange of the body into a double seam.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the container embodying the invention consists of a body portion 1, the side edges of which are joined by a side seam 2. An end 3 is secured to the body portion by double seaming. Before the edges of the blank formin the body are joined to form the side seam, the blank is folded inwardly at 4 and thence outwardly at 5, thus producing an integral band 6. After the side edges have been joined, the body portion is provided with an inwardly projectingbead 7 The body wall is provided with score lines 8 and 9. The score line 8 is just above the upper edge of the band 6 and the score line 9 is slightl below the double seam 10, which joins t e end 3 to the body portion of the container. A collar 11 is provided which fits within the body portion. This collar has a curled lower edge 12 and an outwardly turned upper edge portion 13 which nests against the inner surface of the body of. the container at the flange 14. The end 3 has an outwardly extending flange 15 which, as noted above, is rolled with the flange 14 into the double seam 10. a When the double seam is formed, the upper edge portion 13 of the collar will be gripped between the vertical wall 16 of the central depressed portion of the end 3 and the upper edge portion of the body of the container. Thus it is that the collar is permanently attached to the end and that part of the container body above the upper score line 9.
The body is provided with an integral tongue 17 in line with the rip strip so that a key may be applied thereto and the metal torn along the score lines. When the rip strip is removed then the container end is released from the main portion of the body of the container. That portion of the body wall above the upper score line 9 remains secured to the end by the double seam.
In Fig. of the drawings, the rip strip is shown as torn away and the end raised, lifting the collar from within the container body. The collar will be inserted in the container body for reclosure purposes and the curled edge 12 of the collar will engage the shoulder formed by the inwardly projecting bead 7. This will limit the extent to which the collar may be moved into the container body. There is sufficient extent of movement between the collar and the container body so as to firmly hold it in place for reclosure purposes.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings the wall of the container body is shown as folded at 18 in the forming of the band so as to lie on the outer face of the container body. Otherwise, the structure is the same as in Figs. 1 to 4, except for the fact that the score line 8 is placed lower down while the score line 9? is just beneath the double seam 10. The score 7 line 8 when placed below the upper edge of the band as shown in Fig. 5 produces a container which when opened by removing the rip strip has a smooth upper edge. Furthermore, the raw edge of metal is below this smooth upper edge and there is little or no chance of the hand being cut by the raw edge of metal.
It is understood that the container end is provided with the usual coating so that when the double seam is formed, an hermetic seal is produced. The band produced by the folding of the body wall greatly strengthens the upper end of the container when opened by the removal of the rip strip. The band not only assists in the tearing out of the rip strip, but it also holds the opened container in proper shape for reclosure. The depending collar which is permanently attached to the container end and the part of the body portion above the upper score line becomes a rigid depending portion which forms with the end an eflicient cover for reclosure purposes.
It will be understood that the details of construction of the container may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A container comprising a body portion having score lines adjacent one end thereof forming a rip stri a container end double seamed to said b0 y portion and a collar lo cated within the body and permanently attached to the container end and body above the upper score line and adapted to enter the body for reclosure after the rip strip is removed.
2. A container comprising a body portion the wall of which is folded adjacent one end to form a band, said body having score lines between the lower edge of the band and the end of the body forming a rip strip, a container end double seamed to said body, and a collar located within the body and permanently attached to the container end and body above the upper score line, said collar being adapted to enter the body for reclosure after the rip strip has been removed.
3. A container comprising a body portion having score lines adjacent one end thereof forming a rip strip, a container end double seamed to said body portion and a collar located within the body and permanently attached to the container end and body above the upper score line and adapted to enter the body for reclosure after the rip strip has been removed, said body portion having an inwardly projecting bead positioned so as to serve as a stop shoulder for limiting the extent to which the collar may be inserted in the container body for reclosure.
'4. A container comprising a body portion the wall of which is folded adjacent one end to form a band, said body having score lines between the lower edge of the band and the end of the body forming a rip strip, a container end double seamed to said body, and a collar located within the body and permanently attached to the container end and body above the upper score line, said collar being adapted to enter the body for reclosure after the rip strip has been removed, said container body having an inwardly projecting bead at the lower edge of the band which forms a stop shoulder for limiting the extent to which the collar may be inserted in the container body for reclosure.
In testimony whereof, we aflix our signatures.
