Description
S. R. BILLINGS.
I DOOR-CHECK. No 175 013 Patented March 21', 1876.
WITNEEEEE= -|NV TE] N-FETERS, PMOTO LITHOGRAFHEFL WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
SIMEON R BILLINGS, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [75,013, dated March 21, 1876; application filed February 23, 1876. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Simon R. BILLINGS, of Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,- which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in door-checks, and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the catch and the frame in which it is pivoted, as will be hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a, represents the frame or body, which is provided with the perforated flange, 0, around its base for attaching it to the wall, side of the barn, or any desired object. In between the two ears or projections, at the point d, is pivoted the latch e, which has its outer end beveled away at a, so that it will give before the door, has the recess h, which catches over the edge of the door, the projection 13 on its rear edge, which strikes against the body a,
and acts as a stop to prevent it from moving back too far, and theshoulderj formed on its lowerinside edge. Bearing against this shoulder is a coiled or other suitable spring, l, which keeps the latch always pressed forward so that it will instantly spring over the edge of the door and hold it, as soonas the door passes the incline g. The front inner end 0 of the latch also acts as a stop to prevent it from being forced too far forward by the spring. In the bottom of the body a is made a hole, n, through which the spring can be removed and replaced at will.
This check can be used for gates or barndoors wherever the door can be swung around to reach it.
I do not claim,broadly,a catchthat is operated by a spring so as to be made automatic in its operation but I do claim the peculiar construction and combination of the parts herein shown and described.
A door-check, consisting of the body a, flanges c, latch e having incline g, recess h, stop 6, and shoulder j, in combination with the spring I, and hole n, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of February, 1876.
SIMEON It. BILLINGS.
