Description
March 11, 1930. G. o. RESHAW BASKET Filed April 18, 1,927
Patented Mar. 11,1930
PATENT O FIC GEORGE OTIS RESHA'W, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.-
Application filed April 18,-1927. Serial No. 184,521:
My invention relates to stave baskets and containers such as are used in packing vegetables, fruits and the like and particularly to such type of basket wherein the staves are 5 scored or otherwise formed so that the free ends of each stave maybe bent upwardly at an angle to theintermediate portion of the stave and form substantially upright or straight sides for the basket. The intermediate portions of. the staves are bowed or arched to form the bottom of thebasket.
One'of the objects of my present invention is to provide means for supporting and reinforcing the angularly'bent portions of spreading of the lower upright walls of the basket but also to provide a strong support for the arched portions of the staves which 'Another object of my invention is to provide a support of this nature which-will not only completely embrace and house these angularly bent ortions of the staves and thus reinforce an damage during use, but which will also. provide a ledge to receive the outward thrust of the basket load and at the same time provide a strong supporting bottom upon which 1 the basket rests. u I
These and other objects of my invention will be apparent from the following specification when taken' in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein, p k Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved bas-' Fig.2 is aside elevation thereof, with certain parts broken away to show other parts in section; 1 1
Fi 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of the rein orcin means for the angularly bent portions'o the stave. v In the type of basket to wh1ch my invention particularly applies, the basket is formed of a plurality of'staves of wood'or other material. Each stave is bent angularly preferably by scoring at two oints, one of which bends is shown at 4 in i 2 of the drawing, to provide a base or ottom portionliv and two diametrically opposed upstanding the staves so as to prevent notonly outward constitute the bottom of the basket.
braces portions of both the upright and botprotect them from wear or sive strains or loads. In addition the-rein- .tions of the staves, but s'tifiens the upright equal ortions 8 and 10. The base'portionsfi f the staves overlap and form the bottom of the basket, while the upstandin ortions 8 and 10, which are also prefera y overlapped, form the side wall of the basket. The side wall is reinfor'ced at appropriate points by bands or hoops 12 and 14. As a result ofthe foregoing construction the side wall of the basket is formed substantially straight with respect to the bottom of the basket and the base portionsof the staves are arched or bowed upwardly, thereby eliminating the lower round cornered bend of the staves and permittingthe weight to be taken dire'ctl upon the ends of the staves, while also aifor ing' a raised bottom for the basket. My present invention consists in providing reinforcing means for the angularly bent portions 4 of the staves and particularly reinforcing means which completely em:
tom walls adjacent the bend 4.
In my present invention I provide a metal band'16, which is angular or somewhat L- shaped in cross section, so as to afford two supporting walls, one adapted to embrace the upstanding portions of the-staves and support them, and the'other to rovide a ledge or lower wall 18 for under ying and sup-' porting the outer portions of the arch shaped parts 6 of the staves which constitute the bottom of thebasket. This reinforcing band 16 forms aocomplete housing and support for the angularly bent portions of the staves and prevents breakage thereof due to exces-- forcing means forms a bottom supportupon which thebasketrests. This metallic band 16 is secured by nails or staples 20 or otherwise, to certain of the staves and rigidly embraces the lower ends of all of the vertical portions of the staves, while thebottom ledge 18, which is angularl disposed to the vertical wall of the ban 16 not. only forms a ledge or seat for the ends of the bottom porportions of the band 16 to maintainthe circular form thereof and prevent distortion of the bottom edge of the basket. due to uninside pressure 'or external strains.
While I have shown and described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the principles of my invention, the scope of which is to be determined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention: 1. In a basket, a plurality of elastic wood splints arranged and bent to form a tub basket, a central part of each of the splints extendi n tions of ill of the basket, a pair of hoops for holdin the said'splints in substantially cylindrical orm, a metal L-sha ed band covering the bottom corner of'the asket, the bottom splints extending in parallel planes and the external diameter of the bottom having a diameter larger than the outside diameter of the L- shaped'hoop before the hoop is applied, the
central portions of the splints curved inwardly and operating by their elasticity to engage the metal band and the metal band operating to hold the outside of the bottom of the basket formed by the central parts of the splints concave as against their elasticity.
2. A tub basket comprising a plurality of staves each having a central portion extending across the bottom of the basket and end portions bent upwardly at an abrupt angle to the central portion to form the sides of the basket, a plurality of hoo s holding the staves in substantially cylin rical form and one of said hoops being of substantially L- shape in cross section and covering the bottom corner of the basket, the said central portions of the staves being longer than the diameter of the basket bottom and held in upwardly bowed form by engagement of the ends thereof in the corner of the aforesaid L- shaped ho across the bottom and the end pore splints extending along the sides PGEOBGE OTIS Rnsmw.
