SHIPPING-PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 699,417, dated May 6, 1902.
Application filed February 3,1902. `Serial No. 92,253. (No model.) c
To @ZZ whom, it iii/(ity concern.'
Be it known that l, GUsTAn F. SAMBERG, a
citizen of the United States, residing in the cit)7 and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic-lined drums or barrels, the object of the invention being to materiallystrengthen packages of this nature in order to provide against damage thereof during handling and at the same time to protect the inner metallic lining against rust, due to dampness of the wood itself, climatic changes, or moisture by having the package stored in a damp place.
To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective View of the package, partly broken away; and Fig. 2 is a crosssectional top plan view taken on line c oc, Fig. l.
The package comprises an outer Wooden stave covering' l, held together by bands or hoops 2. This covering surrounds or envelops a Wooden strengthening-drum 3, the fiber of which runs at right angles to that of the vertical staves of the outercovering. Within the wooden drum is iitted an inner metallic lining 4, there being interposed between said lining and the inner surface of the drum 3 a Waterproof-paper filling or lining 5. The metallic lining and paper filling do not extend the entire length or height of the drum 3, but terminate a short distance from the ends thereof. Said metallic lining is .held in place Within and secured to the wooden drum by means of the hoops or bands C, which are nailed thereto. i
The wooden drum 3 not only answers to give sufficient rigidity or stilfness to the package, but serves as a means for holding the metallic lining in place. This lining'consists of strips of tin soldered together, so as to be absolutely tight.
In construction of the package the metallic 5o lining is litted-loosely Within the drum 3 and then by suitable means expanded so as to completely fill the said drum.
When thus expanded, the lapping ends or edges of the liningare soldered together, thus giving a metallic cylinder fitted Within the drum 3. The heads or ends are formed of Wooden plies 7 8, arranged at right angles so as to cross the fiber. To the under face of each head or end is attached a .metallic plate or lining 9. These ends or heads when fitted are supported by the hoops or bands 6 and are secured in place by the hoops or bands 10, nailed to the inner wooden drum. As thus constructed the contents of the package is absolutely protected against moisture or dampness.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new,.and desired to be protected by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shipping-package consisting of an inner wooden strengthening-drum, an outer stave covering therefor` bound by hoops or bands, an inner metallic lining fitted Within, said lining terminating a short distance from each end of the drum and being secured to the wooden drum by means of hoops or bands which cover the ends of the said lining, and heads or ends for the package supported Within the inner drum by the hoops or bands which attach the metallic lining thereto, each having a metallic inner surface and being held in place by means of hoops or bands nailed to the inner strengthening-drum.
2. A shipping-package consisting of an inner Wooden strengthening-drum, an Vouter stave covering therefor bound by hoops or bands, an inner metallic lining itted Within,` said lining terminating a short distance from each end of the drumand being secured to the wooden drum by means of hoops or bands which cover the ends of the metallic lining, a Waterproof filling interposed between theI saidlining and the Wooden strengtheningdrum, and heads or ends for the packages supported within the inner drum by the hoops or bands which secure the metalliclliningfthereto, said headsor ends being secured to they package bymeans of hoops or bands.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my' hand.
GUSTAF F. SAMBERG.
