These feeding rolls feed the sheets to the table 22 before mentioned over the slot 21. This feeding, in this instance, is effected through a grooved cam 44 on a sleeve 200 turning on the shaft 17. This cam, in this instance, engages a roller 45 of an arm 46 of a bell crank lever which is pivoted at 47 to the frame of the machine and has an arm 48 extending therefrom and nected at 49 to a link 50 which 1s in turn connected at 51 to a swinging member 52 to which a pawl 53 is pivoted, this pawl engaging a ratchet 54 of the shaft 55 of the roll 41 and acting'to turn the roll 41 a certain distance when the swinging member 52 is moved in one direction, said pawl riding over the ratchet wheel when the swinging member 52 is moved in the opposite direction. In this way, the feeding roll 41 is given a step by step feedin movement from the continuous movement in the shaft 17. After the sheet has been laid u n or fed to the table 22, a portion thereof 1s severed from the main portion to provide a band or wrapper. This result may be secured in any suitable manner. With the member 71 is pivotally connected at 72 a link 7 3 which in turn is pivotally connected at 74 to an arm -7 5 which is secured to a rock shaft 76 turning on the frame of the .machine. The
rock shaft 76 also has an arm 201 which is pivoted at 202 to a pitman 203, the latter bemg slotted-at 204 and guided on the shaft 17. This pitman 203 also carries a roller 204: operating on a grooved cam 205 which is secured to the sleeve 200 with the cam 44.

This secondary folding mechanism embodies a tube 88 which has a flared intake portion 89 and has its top portion provided with a flared opening, one wall 90 of which is parallel with the line of feed through the machine while the opposite wall 91 is inclined to said line of feed. The' strip with the bands, after leaving the secondary folder, passes over a flat surface 94 formed by the upper side of a bar 95. On opposite sides of this bar are arranged to operate'two endless belts 96, these belts being mounted on two idler pulleys 97 turning on vertical axis 98 adjacent the discharge end of the secondary folder and on opposite sides of the line of feed of the strip through the machine. One lap of each belt which is of flat construction is vertically arranged and operates parallel with the side faces of the bar 95 being held in arallel relation thereto by upstanding aid plates 99 arranged on opposite sides of t e bar 95 and in spaced relatlon to the latter. Adjacent the discharge end of the bar,.two rollers 100 are mounted to turn about an upri htor vertical axis 101 on opposite sides of t 1e line of feed and the belts edge passing beyond the end of the bar 95 pass about these two rollers 100 and are driven thereby, the two shafts 101 having at their'lower ends intermeshing gears 102 and one of the shafts 101 of one of the rollers or pulleys having a bevelled gear 103 thereon with which a bevelled gear 104 and a horizontal shaft 105 meshes. This horizontal shaft 105 also carries a gear 106 meshing in turn with a gear 107 on a shaft 17, so that the shaft 17 is utilized for driving the two endless belts 96. Automatic take up pulleys 108 cooperate with the bolts 96 on the outer faces of the outer lap, these two pulleys each being supported by an arm 109 pivoted at110, the two arms bein connected by a coil spring 111 which maintains the take up pulleys 108 with yielding pressure against the belts. The receiving portions of these belts are'such that each band on the strip is engaged by the belts before it passes from the grooved rollers 23 and in this way the bands are insured of moving with the strip to be banded.
, To cooperate with the bands at their adhesively secured joints while the bands on the striplare passing through the channel formed by t e two belts 96, a series of yielding pressure and heat conducting devices is employed.
In this instance, these yielding pressure devices are in the form of metallic spring arms 112 curved transversely to conform to the strip and its hands and each being connected by a yielding bend 113 with an attaching arm 114 which is secured to the under side of a heat conductin bar 115 which in turn is supported by brac ets 116 above the strip.
Any suitable heating means may e employed for heating the bar 115. In this inv stance, an electric heating coil (not shown) is arranged within a porcelain tube 115" suprted in contact with the bar 115. It will e seen that these series of pressure devices yield independentlyand each covers the strip and its bands but a short distance, but one extends in close proximity to the other so that the strip and its band is subjected to a yielding ressure substantially throughout its travel between the two belts 96 and at the same time these, pressure devices are heated, thus insuring.a quicker drying of the adhesive. The resilient portions 113 facilitate the passage of the strip and its bands beneath the ielding pressure devices, being disposed or eflected in the direction from which the strip is travelin In order to fivide the strip between the bends thereon a severin mechanism is employed which is active uring the travel of the strip and is continuousin its action. In this instance, after the banded strip emerges from the pressure and drying applyin means, it passes through a ta ered sleeve 11 at the dischar e end of whic is arranged a fixed knife bla e 118.; Cooperating with this knife blade is a movable knife blade 119, in this instance, secured to and projecting from a fly wheel 120 which is rigidly secured to the shaft'17. This projecting knife blade on the rotary fly wheel intersects and severs the strip issued from the tapered sleeve 117 at each rotation of the fly wheel and the periphery of the fly wheel is such that it does not interfere with the travel of the strand or strip.
In order to prevent the bands or wrappers being formed and pasted when a strip is not passing through the machine, a controllin means for the sheet feeding mechanism and pasting or adhesive applying mechanism is provided. In this instance this controlling means embodies a controller 206 pivoted at 207 and lying adjacent the feed wheels 8 and 9 in the path of the strip passing through the machine. This controller is ivoted at 208 to a link 209 which is pivot e to a bell crank lever 210, the latter connecting with a sliding clutch member 211 keyed to the shaft 17 to turn with the latter and movable into and out of engagement with a clutch on the sleeve 200 on which are arranged the- cams 44 and 205 that control the paper feeding and pasting mechanisms respectively. A spring 212 acts on the bell crank lever 210 to hold the clutch member 211 out of engagement with the sleeve 200 and to hold the controller 206 in the path of the strip being fed through the machine. When the controlling member 211 is held outwardly by a strip passing through the machine, then'the clutch member 210 will be held in en agement with the sleeve 200 and the paper ceding and the pasting mechanism will operate.
This machine is designed particularly for banding or wrapping pipe cleaners which embody wires to which are secured cotton bristles. These cleaners are usually arranged in a package surrounded by wrappers or bands neartheir centers. Prior to this invention these cleaners have been cut from long strands and then have been assembled in packages and banded or wrapped after being cut. According to this invention, a large number of long strands are assembled to provide a strip which is surrounded by the bands during the movement of the strip 4 through the machine, and thereafter the strip is out between the bands to' provide pieces each of which is in the form of a bundle of the pipe cleaners. It is a parent, however,
that the invention is not limited to banding pipe cleaners nor in fact to banding a strip embodying a plurality of strands, as the lao machine is capable of rating on any strip.
In the operation of t e invention the strip is fed into the intake end of the compression tube 3 and is first engaged by the feeding wheels 6 and 7 and fed thereby to the feeding wheels 8 and 9 which with the feeding wheels 6 and 7 compress the material and feed it to the, bandapplying mechanism. The wrapping material is taken from the roll 39' and fed step by step over the opening 21 in the table 22, the wrapping sheet being severed by the knives 56 and 59,, as a pieceof the wrapping sheet is over the opening 21.

In combination with means for supporting a wrapper, a container having an off-set portion provided" with an opening, a pair of swinging. arms, an aflixer pivotally mounted on said arms and having a projection eccentric to the pivot thereof, and a way on which said projection travels so as to swing the aflixer on the arms as the arms carry'the aflixer from the roller in the container to a wrapper on the supporting means.

A machine of the class described comprising means for feeding a strip through the machine, meansjfor supporting a band forming piece to one side of the path of travel of the stri means for feeding a sheet of band forming material to the supporting means, means for cutting the band forming material to provide a band forming piece, means for applying an adhesive to one edge of the band forming piece, means forfolding the band forming piece about the strip during the travel of the latter, a controlling device for cooperating --with the strip. during the travel of the latter through the machine, and connection between said cont-rolling'de; vice and the adhesive applying machine and also between said controlling device and the sheet feeding means so that the operation of both cease when a strip is not being moved 22. A machine of the class described comprising means for feeding a strip through the machine, means for supporting a band forming piece to one side of the path of travel of the strip, means for feeding a sheet of band forming material to the supporting means, severing mechanism for operating upon said sheet to cut a band forming piece therefrom, a grooved roller for moving the band forming piece from the supporting means to the strippassing through the machine, and a lever having connection with the grooved roller and also with the severing mechanism so that the severing mechanism is'v operated as the grooved roller moves away from the strip.

A machine of the class described comprising means for feeding a strip through the machine, means for supplying a wrappingpiece with an adhesive along one edge, means for folding said wrapping piece around said strip as the strip passes through the machine to overlap the edges of the wrapping piece, a plurality of yielding devices successively operating on said overlapped edges to maintain their overlapped relation until said adhesive has dried, and means for heating said yielding devices to facilitate the drying of said pieces.

A machine of the class described comprising means for feeding a strip through themachine, means for supplying wrapping pieces each with an adhesive along one edge, means for folding said wrapping pieces in spaced relation about said strip as the strip passes through the machine to overlap the edges of the wrapping pieces, and a plurality of heated resilient means successively engaging said overlapped edges for maintaining their overlapped relation until the adhesive has dried.

A machine of the class described comprising means for feeding a strip through the machine, means for supplying a wrapping piece with an adhesive along one edge, means for folding said wrapping piece around one edge as the strip passes through the machine to overlap the edges of. the wrapping piece, a plurality of arms successively operating on said overlapped edges, yielding portions each secured to the receiving end of said arms to yieldingly support said 'arms, a bar of high heat conductivity to which said yielding portions are secured, and means for heating said bar.

A machine of the class described comprising means for feeding a strip through the machine, means for supplying one at a time wrapping pieces, each with an adhesive along one edge, means for folding the wrapping piece about the strip in spaced relation to each other as the strip passes through the machine to overlap the edges of the wrapping pieces, a bar over which said strip with the wrapping pieces pass, two endless belts operating on opposite sides of the bar to feed the strip with the wrapping pieces, and means band cooperating with the overlapped edges of the wrapping pieces as the strip passes between the belts to hold said edges in overlapped relation.

A machine of the class described comprising means for moving a strip through the machine, a support for a flat band forming piece situated to one side of a strip moving through the machine, a roller for moving the orming piece from the support into engagement wlth the strip to cause the band orming piece to travel with the strip, means for moving the opposite edges of the band forming plece on opposite sides of the strip,
15 a folding means acting on the edges of the band formin piece to cause one to overlap the other, an a drying means having feeding elements associated therewith for engaging the band forming piece before the latter has go passed out of engagement with the roller.

A machine of the class described comprising means for feeding a strip through the machine, a support for a fiat band forming piece situated to one side of the strip moving 25 through the machine, a. roller for moving the band forming piece from the support into engagement with the strip, means for folding the band forming piece about the strip, and drying means having associated therewith 30 feeding elements which engage the band while 1t is being folded about the strip and before it has passed out of engagement with the grooved roller.
