Description
March 11, 1930. M. B. BOWEN ADJUSTABLE ELECTRIC PORTABLE CLUSTER Filed April 20, 1928 was.
INVENTOR.
Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MICHAEL B. BOWEN, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FARIES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS ADJUSTABLE ELECTRIC PORTABLE CLUSTER Application filed April 20,
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable electric portable clusters in which pivotally mounted sides with electric socket attachments or nozzles mounted thereon operate in conjunction with or independent of each other.
The objects of my improvement are, to provide simple means whereby the opposite sides may be instantly adjusted to any desired position, thereby pointing electric light sockets attached thereto in a direction dictated by the size and shape of the various standard light reflecting shades which are normally secured to and supported upon the top of electric portable clusters, in order to obtain a maximum degree of lighting efficiently Without the necessity of specially constructed sockets and parts to meet the numerous requirements of different types of light reflecting shades and to facilitate easy and economical wiring.
These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Which I Fig. 1 is a side elevation View showing my invention mounted on a well known type of shaft.
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing a transverse view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the entire device.
Corresponding numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The knob 1, washer 2, and the bolt 3 which extends upwardly through the aperture -A in the band 4, constitute a means of supporting a light reflecting shade, While the said band 4 forms the frame or base for the pivotal engagement of the oppositely disposed shells 5 and 6 which are held securely in position by means of the threaded bolt 7 extending centrally through said shell 5 into engagement With the threaded collar 6B Which is flanged or riveted into integral engagement With the central portion of said shell 6, said threaded bolt 7 being held in locked position by means of the threaded lock collar 8, thereby drawing together said shells 5 and 6 into snug pivotal engagement with said band 4. The socket nozzles 5A 1928. Serial No. 271,501.
and 6A through which electric Wires are run into electric sockets, are flanged or riveted lntegrally with and adjacent to the edge of said shells 5 and 6 respectively.
The oppositely disposed sides or shells 5 and 6 may be revolved pivotally by simply grasping them with the hand and turning either upwardly or downwardly within the radius of a circle, to a position to render the greatest lighting efliciency.
Having described my invention, What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an adjustable electric portable cluster, substantially as described, the combination of an annular band or frame, a pair of pivotally operating oppositely disposed sides having annular recesses or seats to fit said band or frame, a nozzle on each of said sides for the attachment of an electric socket, means in said sides for maintaining the snug pivotal operation thereof.
2. In an adjustable electric portable cluster substantially as described, an annular band or frame, a pair of oppositely disposed sides having formed at the edge thereof annular recesses or seats adapted to fit the correspondingly opposite edges of said band or frame, a threaded nozzle integrally mounted on and adjacent to the edge of said sides, means for bolting said sides tightly together to maintain the snug pivotal operation thereof against the opposite edges of said band or frame, an aperture through the normal bottom of said annular frame, to serve as a means for mounting the device upon a common shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
MICHAEL B. BOWEN.
