VAN-IT! CASE Fil d-Dec. 11, 1928 INVENTOR M ATTOR EY Patented Mar. 4, 1930 PATENT OFFICE DAVID H. ZELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK VANITY CASE Application filed. December 11, 1928. Serial No. 325,285.
This invention relates to vanity cases, and has for its principal object and purpose'to provide the body of the case with simply constructed and reliable means for securely though removably retaining within the case body pans or I receptacles for powder and f rouge together with a lip stick holder.
It is a more particular object of the invention to provide a receiving member for the lip stick holder adapted to be interposed between the rouge and powder pans with means for detachably connecting said member to the body wall of the case.
It is another object of the invention to so construct said receiving member for the lip stick holder that parts thereof will cooperate with opposed walls of the powder and rouge pans to hold said pans against displacement from their normal positions with respect to the walls of the case body.
It is also a further general object of the invention to provide an improved vanity case of the above character which will be highly serviceable and convenient in practical use 2 and may be manufactured and sold at comparatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in View, theinvention consists in the improved'vanity case, and in the form, construction and relative arrangement of its several parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.
-In the drawing, wherein I have disclosed one simple and practical embodiment of the invention, and in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,- p
a Figure 1 is atop plan Viewshowing the case open and parts of the cosmetic receiving pans omitted;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transversesection'al view taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the powder receiving pan; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the body wall of the case;
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the receiving member for the lip stick holder;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the lip stick holder, and
Fig. 8 is a similar View of the slide member for adjusting the lip stick with respect to the holder.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates the body wall of the case which consists of a rigid steel plate of proper size and shape. One side of this plate is faced with a suitable covering material of ornamental character indicated at 6, such as imitation leather or the like, edge portions of which are turned over the corresponding edges of the body plate 5.
These edge portions of the covering material are securely clamped and held against the opposite side face of the plate by means of a rectangular body frame 7 of angular form in cross section which is superimposed thereon. Theframeis rigidly held or secured to the body plate, preferably by means of a plurality oftongues 8 struck from the body plate and bent over and securely clinched upon the inwardly projecting flanges of the frame 7.
Upon one end wall of this frame the cover or closure 9 for the case is hingedly attached as at 10, and thecovering material 6 is extended externally over said end wall of the case and over the outer face of the cover. To the inner side of said cover the mirror plate indicated at 11 is securely attached. The particular means for attaching this mirror plate to the body plate of the cover and securing the covering material 6 upon the latter, constitutes no essential feature of the present disclosure, as it is fully described and claimed in a co-pending application for patent filed of even date herewith.
At the opposite end of the body frame 7 internally thereof, a suitable resiliently yieldable latch element 12 is arranged within a transversely extending housing strip 13 and is adapted to be actuated by the push button 14 projecting through an opening in the end wall of the frame 7. With this latch element the tongue or finger 15 on the cover 9 is adapted to cooperate to secure said cover in its closed position.
The body plate 5 intermediate of its ends and centrally thereof is provided with an inwardly struck T-shaped tongue, the head 16 of which remains integrally connected along one edge with said body plate and extends transversely thereof while the stem portion 17 of said tongue extends longitudinally of the body plate and in spaced relation thereto. Thistongue is preferably vprovided with spaced ribs or corrugations indicatedat 18 extending along the opposite edges of the part 17 thereof.
Pans or receptacles 19 and 20 respectively, of suitable size and capacity, are adapted to contain face powder and rouge. I These pans are adapted to fit snugly between the opposite side walls of the frame 7, and preferably the pan '19 is arranged adjacent to the latch housing 13 and at one side of :the tongue on the body plate while the other ,pan is disposed at the opposite side of said tongue and adjacent to the hinge 10. These pans are of such dimensions that their opposed wallsare spaced apart a suitable distance and between thesame the channel shaped member 21 which receives the lip stick holder is adapted to be positioned. This member is formed of pressed sheet steel, and the base wall thereof is provided with an outwardly struck loop or strap portion 22 which is adapted to be slidably engaged between the body plate or wall 5 of the case body and the longitudinally projecting stem portion 17 of the tongue thereon. The side walls of the member 22 at their edges are outwardly turned or'flared as 'indicatedat 23'and are adapted for frictional bearing engagement againstthe opposed walls of the pans 19 and 20 so that these pans will be retained in position within the case against accidental displacement.
the cooperating latch'tongue 15 on the cover may project. Thislug 24 is formed at one side thereof with a vertically offset transversely projecting lip 26 with which the finger may be conveniently engaged to lift the pan 19 and remove the same to a sufiicient extent to permit the receiving member 21 and the lip stick holder contained therein to be detached from the body plate 5 of the case when it is desired to use the lip stick.
InFig. 7 of the drawings, I have shown a convenient form of the lip stick holder which consists of a rectangular sheet'lmetal casing 27 having a longitudinally extending slot 28 in one of its side walls. Another wall of said casing 27 at one end thereof is provided with the internal projection 29 which constitutes a stop limiting movement of'the slide member 30 in one direction. This slide member has a snug sliding fit within the easing 27 and isprovided with :a laterally projecting finger piece 31 at one side thereof which projects outwardly through the slot 28. The member 30 is likewise in the form of a hollow sheet metal casing which receives one end of the lip stick indicated atv v32. It will therefore, be evident that as the lip stick- 32 is consumed by use, it may be readily adjusted by shifting the slide 30 and the end of the lip stick projected beyond the corresponding end of the casing 27.
when not in e, th lip stick32 is wholly enclosed within the casing 27 and said casing snugly fits within the channel shaped member 21 and is resiliently clampedbetween the sidewalls thereoff By then placing this member 21 transversely within the body frame 7 of the case and shifting the same longitudinally thereof, the stem portion 17 of thetongue on the case plate 5 will enter the loop or strap;22 on the under side of said 7,
member .21. and by frictional coaction with said strap .and the base wall of said member been found very satisfactory in actual use.
Nevertheless, it is to be understood that the essential features of my present disclosure might also be incorporated in various other alternative structures, and I therefore, reserve the privllege of resorting to all such legitimate mechanical changes therein as may be fairly incorporated within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim: i 1. In combination witha vanity case having a metal body plate providedwith a tongue struck inwardly and positioned inspaced" parallel relation to the plane of said plate, a channel shaped memberto receive a lip stick holder adapted to be positioned within the case and having a strapstruck from its base wall, and said strap being adapted to receive said tongue upon a relative sliding movement between said member and the case wall to thereby detach-ably interlock the parts with each other.
:2. A vanity case including a case body adapted to receive cosmetic holding pans spaced apart longitudinally of said body, a
channel shaped member adapted to be positionedttransversely within the case bodyand having resiliently-yieldable side walls to engage the spaced pans and frictionally resist their movement relative to the case'body,
said member adapted to receive and removably retain a lip stick holder within the channel thereof, and the body Wall of the case and the bottom wall of said channel shaped member having means to coact with each other upon a bodily longitudinal movement of said member within the case to detachably lock said member in its applied position and retain the same within the case when the lip stick holder and the pans are removed therefrom.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereto.
