RUE, OF TIGARD, OREGON SILEN CING- COVER FOR REACHINES pplication filed January 13, 1927 This invention relates generally to the art of transmitting communications, and particularly to that branch thereof whereby typewriting machines are automatically operated by telegraph whereby telegraphic messages are transcribed and the transcriptis in the form of a typewritten sheet.

The main object of the invention is to pro vide an exceedingly simple and efficient silencing cover for telegraphically operated automatic typewriting machines wherein practically no sounds are permitted to escape from the cover, and in which the operation of the machine can be as easily observed as if the cover were not in place.

The second object is to so construct the cover that it will completely surround the typewriting machine and extend to the floor upon which the machine stands, thereby reducing to the minimum the opportunities for sounds to be transmitted to the surrounding atmosphere.

The third object is to so construct the cover that its upper portion may be readily lifted off in order to give complete access to the typewriting machine itself.

The fourth object is to provide a special kind of wall construction for the cover which will be unusually eflicient in resisting the passage of sound vibrations.

The fifth object is to make it possible tc employ batteries of automatic typewriters in ofiices in conjunction with manually operated machines without distracting the oper ators of such machines by the noise that would naturally accompany the use of a number of automatic machines if such machines were not suitably equipped with silencing covers.

These, and other objects, will become more apparent from the specification following as illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Referring in detail to the drawing, it will be observed that the cover itself consists of the

10 and 11 is a small top section consisting of the front 17 which is provided with the swivels 18 and the sides 19 which are provided with handles 20. The sides 19 are also provided with grooves 21 for a glass 22 which forms the cover for the upper section. A back 23 connects the higher rear ends of the members 19. The glass 22 rests on felt atall points at which it is supported. The glass 22 is made to slope, for convenience in observing the operation of the machine and reading the matter being printed, as well as to facilitate the removal of the printed matter from the machine.

The upper section is held in position by a strip 24; which completely surrounds the cover and can be secured to either the upper or lower sections as seem most desirable. The union between the upper and lower sec tions is also sealed by means of felt.

lVhen it is desired to remove typewritten matter from the machine it is only necessary to slide the glass cover 22 downwardly while performing the operation and then return same to its original position.

Owing to the nature of the automatic ma chines ordinary silencing covers such as have been employed on typewriters would not be practical and it is for this reason that the special construction above described is employed, and that the covers are extended to the floor itself instead of terminating at the usual machine base.

We are aware that various types of silencing covers have been constructed in the past for diflerent types of machines; we therefore do not claim such devices broadly, but we do intend to cover all such forms and modifications thereof as fall fairly within the appended claim.

We claim:

A silencing cover consisting of a box adapted to rest upon the floor having its upper end open and having each side wall formed of spaced wall elements having their adjacent sides felt covered; a removable section adapted to be mounted upon said box having an over-lapping connection with said lower box member, the sides of said section sloping toward the front and having grooves on their inner upper ed es; a glass cover for said section sli ably aced in said move and resting on the front and back of said section; and havin felt pads placed between the contacting si es of said glass and its supporting members.
