This invention relates to vacuum cleaners, an object of the invention being to provide a vacuum cleaner which will be relatively small and compact, which can be convenient- 1y carried from place to place, and which will occupy but very small space when not in use.

A further object is to provide a wheeled carriage supporting a motor and suction fan 1 therein, the latter connected by a hose and tubular handle with a vacuum nozzle so that the carriage can be easily drawn over the floor relieving the operator of the weight of the motor and blower at the nozzle as it is customarily employed, and also providing a receptacle in which the hose and the handle when telescoped can be conveniently stored.

With a device of this character I am enabled not only to support the motor and blower within the carriage but provide space for the bag and also space for the attachments which are always ready for use; and I also provide a reel attached to the body'of the carriage on which the electric cord may be wound.

Another important feature of my invention is the provision of a handle, preferably in the form of a bail, whichcan be readily rasped so as to enable the carriage and all 39 of the parts of the device to be conveniently carried from place to place.

' It is of course to be understood that my improved apparatus maybe assembled in any desired way as, for example, the carrier may constitute a wire cage, which may be given any desired color, and other features of design and ornamentation may be employed to give pleasing results.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. I

In the accompanying drawings-- Figure 1 is a perspective view partly in section showing my improved vaccum cleaner in operative position;

Figure 2 is an enlarged view in front end elevation of the carriage shown in Figure 1 with the hose broken away;

Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 2;

Figure 4 is a view in longitudinal section on the line H of Figure 3;

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the reel on which the electric cord is wound.

A represents my improved carriage which may constitute a solid base 1 supportedby wheels 2 and having a receptacle 3 thereon so which may be of wire mesh as illustrated or of any other form desired. This receptacle 3 is open at the top and has a recess 4 in its front wall extending downwardly from the top of the receptacle the desired distance.

Within the carriage A I removably secure an electric motor 5 operatively connected to a suction fan or blower 6, and I provide a dust bag 7 connected to the outlet of the suction fan or blower 6, as is common in the art.

8 represents a hose which is connected to the inlet of the suction fan or blower 6, and this hose 8 is connected to a tubular handle 9 havinga suction nozzle 10 at its free end. The suction nozzle 10 may be of any form de sired, and the handle 9 is preferably made up of telescoping sections so that it may be coilapsed and readily stored within the carriage or receptacle A. i so By providing the recess 4 in the end'of the carriage A, the motor and other units of the 'Vacuum cleaner can be disconnected and replaced whenever cleslred, and as a'simple means of attachment I have shown a strap 11, 5 which may be of metal or any other suitable material and which is secured to the base or platform 1 and secures the motor or other parts of the vacuum cleaner within the carriage.

12 represents a handle, which is in the form of a bail, pivotally connected at its ends to the sides of the carriage A so that this handle can be grasped readily to carry the carriage from place to place. The dust bag 7 has a coupling 13 at one end to couple to the handle 12, as clearly shown, A board or other inclined partition 14 is secured in the casing A, preferably at the rear thereof, forming a receptacle in which attachments 15 for the vacuum cleaner can be kept when not desired for use but they willalways be in position for use whenever de- SIIG 16 represents a reel on which an electric cord 17 connected to the motor is adapted to be wound. This reel 16, has a notch 18 in its edge through which the cord may be passed allowing the electric plug 19 to lie outside of the reel with the cord wound on the reel.

. It will thus be noted that when the device is to be stored the handle 9 can be collapsed, and the hose 8 and handle 9 can be disposed within the carriage'A. The bag 7 when there 3 is no force of air therethrough will collapse and it will fold Within the carriage and the electric cord 17 can be wound on the reel 16. The device as a Whole can then be stored in a very small space but will be ready for instant use whenever desired. I

The inlet and outlet of the fan or blower are of the same size so the hose may be attached to either.

While I have illustrated What I believe to be a preferred embodiment of my invention Y it is obvious various changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.

I claim;

A vacuum cleaner, including a' Wheeled carriage, said carriage comprising a base, wheels supporting the base, and anopen top casing on the base, a motor and suction fan secured in the carriage, a handle on the carriage, a bag connected to the outlet of the fan removably coupled to the handle, a hose connected to the inlet of the fan, a telescoping handle connected to the end of the hose, a. nozzle at the end of the handle, and said casing at its front end having a recess extendin'g downwardly at its open top through which recess the said hose is movable.
