This invention relates to improvements in cabinets or other receptacles and has particular relation to means for mounting the door of a cabinet or receptacle, the invention being especially designed for use in connection with medicine cabinets of the type usually placed in bath rooms.
Cabinets of the above type are usually provided with mirrors so that they serve as a cabinet or receptacle, while the cabinet door provides means for conveniently supporting trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a cabinet with the invention applied. 3' Figure 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 3 with the wall omitted. Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 showing the cabinet in position within a wall. Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional View through the cabinet with the door open to permit access to the interiorof the cabinet.

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the cabinet which is preferably formed of metal comprises a receptacle 10 which is open at the front, a flange 11 extending entirely around the open front of the cabinet for contact with the wall 12 adjacent the opening 13 in said wall to provide a finish for the cabinet.
The door of the cabinet is also preferably formed of metal and comprises an inner panel 14 having rightangularly arranged marginal flanges 15. Positioned against the outer face 79 of the panel 14 is a mirror 16, while a retain ing frame 17 is secured to the flange 15 and engages over the edges of the mirror so as to hold the latter in place.
The door is adapted to be closed flush with the outer face or flange of the cabinet and is adapted to be swung outward in the usual manner, or to be swung upon horizontal or vertical pivots to provide different adjustments as shown in thedrawings. For this purpose the invention includes a novel form of hinge. This hinge includes a door carrying section which is made up of anouter plate 18 and an inner plate 19. The outer plate 18 has its upper and lower ends pivotally secured to the upper and lower flanges 15 of the door as shown at 20, the pivotal connections being approximately central of the width of the door so that the door may be moved pivotally independent of the hinge.
The plate 19 is hingedly secured to the cabinet by means of upper and lower arms 21. These arms have their outer ends secured to the plate 19 while their inner curved ends extend through openings 22 provided in the cabinet and, are pivotally connected at the rear of the flange 11 as shown at 23. This form of hinge permits the door to be moved to the open and closed positions shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.
The plates 18 and 19 are provided with offset portions 23 and 24 central of their lengths, and these offset portions are arranged in overlapping relation and are connected by a pivot pin 25, so that the door may be swung outward substantially parallel with the face of the cabinet as shown in Figure 5 and may also be tilted either upward or downward as indicated by the dotted line position in Figure 6. The offset portion of each of the plates is provided with spaced depressions 26 as shown in Figures 2, 6 and 10 of the drawings and these depressions form projecting members so that the plates will interlock to yieldingly hold the door against movement upon the pivot 25.
The plate 19 has extending from opposite ends a plunger having a rounded head 27 and a shank 28. This shank is arranged within a housing 29 positioned at each end of the plate and is surrounded by a coiled sprin 30 which bears against the head 27 and yiel ingly forces the latter outward. Positioned Within the flange 15 of the door are socketed members3l, whose sockets 32 are arranged to receive the heads 27 of the plungers when the plates 18 and 19 are folded inward against the rear face of the door. The plungers thus serve to yieldingly hold the plates in the position shown in Figures 3 and 4. The socketed members 31 have their outer edges rounded as shown at 33 so that the heads 27 of the plungers may readily ride upward to enter the sockets.
In Figure 11, the plates 18 and 19 are pivotally connected as at 34, while the extension of one of these plates carries a threaded stud 35 which extends through an arcuate slot 36 formed in the other plate. A thumb screw .37 is mounted upon the stud 35, so that the plates may be adjusted pivotally and held in adjusted position by means of this thumb 'screw.
In Figure 12,.the plates are pivotally connected asfshown' at'38 and in order to adjustably -hold-the plates against. pivotalmovement, one of the plates has pivotally connected thereto'an arm 39. This arm is slotted as at- 40 so as to receive a threaded stud 41 which is carried by the other plate. A thumb nut 42 which is mounted upon the stud holds the plates against accidental relative movement.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
The combination with a cabinet having a door therefor, of a hinge connecting the door with the cabinet to permit the door to be moved either horizontally to an open position or adjusted vertically to a tilted position,
said hinge including a pair of vertically arranged complementary plate-like sections, upper and lower arms pivotally mounted upon the cabinet and supporting one of said sections of the hinge, means for-pivotally supporting adoor on the upper and lower ends of the other section of the hinge, whereby the door may he moved upon its pivot independently of the hinge, the conforming edges of said sections being formed with centrally located off-set disk-like portions ar ranged in overlapping relation, a horizontal pivot connecting said disk-like portions, to permit the door to be tilted vertically subsequent to being swung to an open position, and means for holding the door in a given tilted position.
