IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 174,877, dated March 14, 1876; application filed December 23, 1875.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM TYLER, of Geneseo, in the county of Livingston and in the State of New-York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and do hereby. declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pump for wells, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use thesame, I will now proceed to .describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my pump. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of the upper portion of the pump-cylinder. Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed views of parts thereof. Fig. 6 shows a plan and section of a changeable bottom.
This pump may be submerged or not, as desired, and is a suction, force, and lift pump.
A represents the cylinder, provided with a valve, B, at each end, either one or both of which may be used, as required. When used as a submerged pumpthat is, force and liftthe top valve only is to be used, and a small leak is to be made in the pipe below the reach of frost; otherwise the water would stand in the pipe, as the pressure is on the top valve, and therefore cannot run down, although the piston-rod is not packed.
When used as a suction-pump, and as a nonfreezer,I use only the lower valve. The pressure is then in the cylinder, and if the pistonrod is not packed the water will be slowly forced out around the rod, through the packing-box.
G is the bottom valve-plate, which sits in the head D on a bevel, for the purpose of being easily taken out, although it should be rusted in for many years. This valve-plate covers a suction-chamber, E, and forms part of the. seat of the ring a, that packs the end of the cylinder. This ring also packs the joint between the valve-plate O and pump-head D. The top pump-head is in twov pieces, G and G. The bottom piece G is a cover for the upper end of the cylinder, and also answers for the top valve-seat, when said valve is used. The top piece G sitting on this cover forms a water-reservoir, and contains the packing-box H and pipe attachment I. Sometimes this top cover G is used alone, (i. 0., when the top valve is not used,) inpvhich case it is flanged to tit and pack the upper end of the cylinder. The valves used consist each of a disk with metallic caps. This disk covers two or more valve-openings, and folds through the center, by which I obtain the largest possible valveopening, and the least valve-lift. On the upper end of the pipe I is the air-chamber J, which may be converted into a reservoir by turning up a thumb-screw, K, screwed therein. This thumbscrew is constructed with a groove, 11, the length of the thread to the shoulder or packing-disk d, which allows the air to escape, and the discharge-stream flows smooth and steady. The thumb-screw is to be turned down when used as an air-chamber or force-pump.
The handle of this pump is made of a metal part, L, and a wooden part, M, which are joined together by means of a mortise cast 011 both sides of the metal part L, and the wood part M is grooved 0r slotted, so as to straddle the portion between, and is held to its place by a bolt or rivet, or both, which makes a very strong and cheap handle.
The air-chamber J is to have open-work braces attached under the spout by means of bolts. The braces are to cover a sufficient opening in the platform to allow a free circulation of air in and out of the well, for the purpose of keeping the water pure.
The pump-plunger is constructed substantially as shown in Fig. 2, and is composed of a valve, B, constructed in the same manner as described for the valves B, and placed on a rod, h, up to a nut or shoulder, t, thereon.

having beveled edges, and placed in a skeleton cup, P, having its rim correspondingly beveled, and a packing-ring, R, inserted beand a flange, y, "above and around t tween them. A nut, m, screwed on the rod, h, up against the cup, secures the parts firmly together in position. 1

It will be seen when this bottom is used, that the lower valve is dispensed with. I usethis pump with this latter ,bottomin cisterns, and in this case a small hole may be bofd in, the cylinder A, near its lower end, to allo'w'of the escape of water in cold weather.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.
