This invention relates to covers adapted to be applied to thewback rests of seats, or to cushions and the'like".

v nobject of the invention is to provide an improved cover adapted to be applied to the the back rests of seats, or to cushions and the like, and comprising front and rear sections adapted to cover .the front and rear surfaces ci the back rest of a seat, or the upper and lowery surfaces oi cushions, and connected by an elastic side portion whereby the device may be applied to back rests and cushions of diderent thiclmess and yet tit snugly thereon.

Another object of the invention is te pro vide an improved cover in the form oi a slip adapted to be slipped over the back rest ci a seat, or over a cushion, to enclose the same, said cover being of approximately box-like form and having a substantially non-elastic front or top, and an elastic side connectingl the front or top with the rear orI bottom side of the slip, so as to permit application of the device to back rests, or cushions, oi' diierent sizes.,

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned including a Hap in connection with the edge of one of the members adapted to be folded around an edge of the back rest of the seat, or of the cushion, so as to enclose the same and cooperate with the remaining structure to hold the device in proper adjustment.

Other objects will appear from. the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a perspective view of a seat having my improved cover applied to the back rest thereof. v

This section should be a reticulated textile, though ll do not restrict myself to such material. Straw matting is suitable vfor this purpose, as it possesses the desirable qualities of flexibility and pliability so as to conform to the contour of the surface of the back rest or cushion to which it is applied'and yet is sufficiently nonelastic and stid .so that it will not readily fold or crumple upon itself, but will maintain an attractive appearance longer than many other materials. rlhe warp straws or threads l extend vertically, or from iront to rear, while the woot threads 2 extend transversely and may be arranged in pairs, as shown. A non-elastic lining 3 oi-textile or other suitable material is applied to the inner side of the iront or top of the cover. rlhe rear or underside of the cover comprises a section d oi non-elastic material which may be of the same type of straw matting as that included in the front or top section As shown, the rear or bottom panel is of smaller area than the iront or top, though the construction may be varied in this respect. y

The sides oi:u thefcover or slip comprise an elastic textile strip 5 extending from adjacent lower corners of the front and rear panels upwardly along adjacent vertical side edges, and thence transversely along the top edges and downwardly along the opposite vertical edges to the opposite lower corners of the panels, leaving the lower or front end of the box-like structure open so that the device may be readily slipped upon a back rest of a seat, or upon a cushion. The edges 6 oi the strip 5 extend outwardly against the marginal portions of the lining 3 and the back panel fi, respectively. And, the margins of the front and rear panels including for the front panel the margins of the surface section, the lining 3 and the strip 5, and including for the back or bottom the margins of the panel 4 and the strip 5, are enfolded within a binding strip 7 secured to the other elements by lines of stitching 8. The binding strip 7 continues across the lower or front edges of the front and rear portions of the cover, as do the lines of stitching 8 to secure the parts together. v

The front or open lower end of the cover is equipped with a flap 9, an edge of which is enfolded between the margin of the lining 3 and the binding strip 7, a line of stitching S securing the parts together. The margin l0 of the flap 8 is folded upon itself at the rear under side thereof and along all exposed edges thereof and secured in this position by a row of stitches 11.

A cover of this character may be easily applied and easily removed. lt is readily applicable to back rests or cushions of different sizes because the flexible and elastic strip 5 is expansible for this purpose. The cover may be slipped upon a hack rest or cushion, the open side or end of the cover permitting such application. After the cover is applied the Hap is folded around the side or end of the back rest or cushion and in the embodiment shown is tucked between the rear or lower panel l and the back rest or cushion and cooperates with the remaining cover structure to hold the device in position. The cover possesses many advantages made apparent from the foregoing description and obtains all of its intended objects and purposes very efficiently and satisfactorily. A wide range of materials may be used and the construction and arrangement of the parts may be varied without departure from the nature and principle of the invention.

Accordingly, I do not restrict myself imessentially in these or other particulars, but

what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cover of the character described comprising opposite panels for covering opposite sides of a seat cushion or back, and an elastic strip connecting said panels along all edges other than one edge and permitting spacing of said panels and forming therewith a boxlike structure which is open at said one edge of said panels to receive the seat back or cushion.

2. A cover for a seat back or cushion comprising a panel of non-elastic material, a lining secured against the inner side of said panel, a cooperating non-elastic panel, and an elastic strip connecting said panels along their marginal portions and forming therewith-a box-like structure adapted to receive the back rest of a seat or cushion.

3. A cover for the back rest of a seat or a cushion comprising two non-elastic panels for covering the opposite sides of the back rest or cushion, and an elastic strip connecting the marginal edges of said panels and arranged to cover the side edges of a back' rest of a seat or cushion.

4. A cover for a seat back or cushion comprising a panel of non-elastic material, a lining covering the inner side of said panel,
