Patented Feb. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NORMAN J. URQUHART, OF DETROIT, MIOHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO HARRY W. THOMAS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN l SPRAYER NOZZLE Application filed April 11,
The invention relates to sprayer nozzles of that type more particularly designed for use in the spraying of fine granular solids or dust and the invention consists in the 5 novel construction as hereinafter set forth.
- In the, drawings;
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through the sprayer nozzle.
Figure 2 is a cross section on line 2 -2 Figure 3 is an end elevation thereof.
Among the various uses of my improved nozzle are first the spraying of poison-dust over vegetation; second, the spraying of solid dust fuels in combustion furnaces. For the latter use it is essential that the quantity of solid fuel should be very accurately proportioned to the quantity of air in the current by which it is carried. It is also necessary to change the proportion where there is va' riation in fuel value or weight of solid material or to suit other conditions. Where the device is used for spraying dust in the open air it is desirable to avoid as far as possible deflection or obstruction of the stream by atmospheric movement. The means for accomplishing this is also a feature of my invention. In detail A is a T-shaped fitting which is connected by the nipple B with a swivel head C on the stationary conduit 1). E is a nozzle member having a threaded engagement with and projecting forward from the fitting A, said member having atits rear end the flaring mouth F which connects with the sub-,
stantially straight passage G. At the rear of the fitting A is the nozzle member H which has a screw threaded engagement with said fitting permitting of longitudinal adjustment therein. The member H has a tapered forward end I which may be adjusted into the flaring mouth F or rearward therefrom. There is also the central air jet passage J which connects with an enlarged supply passage K. This is connected by the-swivel fitting L with a valve casing M having a needle or other metering valve N for regulating the quantity of air. The valve casing M is connected to an air conduit 0 through-which 5c the air supply is conducted thereto. There 1927. Serial No. 182,841.
is also a lock nut P having a threaded engagement with the member H and adapted to lock the same in different positions of adjustment.
To concentrate the projected stream and v to impart thereto a greater power of penetration, the passage G through the member P is slightly twisted. This will impart a rotation to the projected current which will prevent its deflection by atmospheric disturbo ances. I preferably accomplish this by making the passage G of slightly oval cross section with a spiral twist from one end of the member E to the other.
With the construction as described, where the device is used in connection with a combustion furnace the dust fuel is drawn into the fitting A through the conduit D by means of the suction produced by the jet from the nozzle H. The air for producing this jet is regulated by the needle valve N in the valve fitting M and the proportionate quantity of dust fuel is obtained by adjusting the member H longitudinally toward or from the flaring mouth F of the member E. Thus the ratio between the air and the fuel may be made that best suited for complete combustion.
Where the device is used for the spraying of other dust materials such as poisons, they are drawn in and discharged in the same so manner as previously described. The universal head C will permit of adjusting the nozzle so as to point in different directions and by reason of the rifling or twisting of the barrel, the stream is concentrated so as to increase its projective power and to avoid deflection of air currents.
When the nozzle member H is to be adjusted the lock nut P is first loosened and the -member H then turned to screw it inward or v nozzle member threaded to engage the oppotherein toward or from sald site nipple of said fitting and adliustable first mentioned nozzle, the forward end of said jet nozzle corresponding to the taper of said flaring mouth, an air conduit connected to said jet nozzle, a meteringtvalve for controlling air I supplied nected to the stem of the T-shaped fitting to the jet nozzle and a conduit conthrough which the dust is introduced by the suction of said jet and venturi.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
NORMAN J. URQUHART.
