Description

Feb. 18, 1930. J. M. THoMPsoN GATE SUPPORTINQMEANS Filed 001.. 27, 1928 Smic@ Joh-rz JYLThompson,

Patented Feb. 18, 1930 PATENT v'oFFlcE JOHN M. THOMPSON, THORPE, IOWA GATE-surnomme' MEANS Application mea amber 2?, '1328, serial'No.aisfliz.` Y
My inventionrelates to improvements in supporting means for gates and the like, and .the object ofk myk improvements is to perfect a supporting structure of this class which may be easily andquickly employed forsupportingrr a gate at dierent vertical heights to freely swing to and fro in any adjusted position of the gates relative to the support.
Another object is to effect improvements in the invention of gate supporting means,
oswinging gate at a desired height of adjustment fromA the ground. Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation,
with parts broken away, of the gate supporti ing means. Fig. 3 is a top planof the struc- V tures of said Fig. 2, with a part vin cross section.
o' vIt will be understood that minor modifications of my improvements are covered Within the principles of this invention and of the i' 3o appended claims.
1 is a rear tubular post which may be fixyedly mounted on any suitable baseor the groundfitself, the post being closed at the Y bottom and open vat the top and containing vin its interior bore a vertically disposed -coiled lcompression spring 1-, The numeral l12 denotes a pair Vof like mating hollow members, which may be castings or stampings, whose vlower part when assembled contains .an interior hollow 17 opening downwardly and ofan interior diametersuitable to permit thein to fit loosely and rotatably upon the top portion of the post 1, the inner wall of this hollow 17 having an annular groove 15 toreceive and movably interlock with an annular ange 16 on the post 1, so that the members 12 at their parts 14 may freely swinghorizontally'upon the post and be retained: thereon. The upper parts of the mem- 556 bers 12"--14 have ya borev18 of less diameter eccentric cam bears against one Hat face of the abutting member 12, and has a projecting than the bore or hollow 17 to loosely seat the l lower portion of a cylindrical standard 5 whose upper part is reversely bent downwardly in parallel to provide a goose-neck 6.
Q The lower end of the standard 5 is supf ported upon the upper end "of the spring 4 within the' upper part of the post 1. The numeral 10 denotes the hollow tubular metal 'frame of a horizontally elongated and wire netted gate of a well-known type whose `front f stile is adjacent'a front post 2, the latter having a spring clip 3 mounted thereon in a position andata height permitting it to clip removably the front stile of the gate in any vertically adjusted position ofthe latter. The free extremity of the kgate is'supported 'by a brace-rod 11 vconnected to the upper bend of the standard 5.
` The rear stile of thegate 1() is securedffixedly to the goose-neck or bend 6`by pairs of clamps 7 and 8 at top and bottom, and a clamping pair of members 9 are used to support the rear lower part of the gate, being lixedly clamped" to the rear stile of thel gate below the lower clamps 8, and being loosely yor'rookingly mounted upon the post 1.
I have adoptedthe following described 4means for releasably securing the standard 5 in a vertical position of adjustment relative to .thepost 1 andits head ymembers 12-14. As best shown in Figi 3, the mated members aforesaid at 12 where opposite faces are flattened, are apertured horizontally and in parallel on opposite sides of the standard 5 to 'loosely receive the pair of headed bolts 19, and'to also traverse apertures in the outwardly'projecting extremities of a pintle 25 'upon which between said bolts an eccentric 24 is rockingly mounted. This eccentric or handle 26. `On the opposite ends vof the bolts 19 are mounted upon theii` threads nuts120 engaging the opposite flat face of the memberl12, a split compression spring 21 is next i mounted onA each bolt next to a washer 22 and a terminal nut 23 permitting adjustments of the tension of the spring. y v
It will be seen that when the tension of the spring 21 is properly adjusted,the.handle26 may be swung downwardly after the'other spring 4 has been allowed to react to propel the standard 5 together with said gate to a desired height from the ground, the eccentric cam then acting upon the members 12 through the bolts 19, to tightly 'clamp the members 12 upon the standard 5, thus retaining the` gate the selectedpositioi, where it may be freelyswung to and fro. y
It will be observed that the clamping means described are simpler than those of said Patent No. 1,616,558, effecting an economy in manufacture, positioned more conveniently, and are free from the bend 6 of the standard 5, suiting the latter and said bend for particular uses and locations.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: l i
1i In combination, a fixed support, 'a tensionally controlled member movable vertically relatively to and also rockingly mounted upon said support,-a gatev secured upon said member to swingtherewith to and fro horizontally, and means for releasably hold-y ing said member and gate in a verticallyvadjusted position u pon said support while pery mittin'g the member and gate to swing freely,
consisting of separably vmating clamps mounted loosely upon said member and upon the upper part of the support only', said clamps being apertured in alinement on opposite sides of the said member, stems seated loosely iny said apertures vconnected at one end by a pintle, an eccentric cam rockingly mounted on said pintle andhaving its cam edge bearing against said clamps, 'and tensio'nallycontrlled securing means adj ustably mounted upon the opposite ends of said stems against said clamps, whereby the cam may be rocked to clamp the clamps tightly upon said member while allowing the lower parts of the clamps to' seat loosely rockingly upon saidv support.
2: In combination, a tubular support open tally upon said support, the clamping elements remaining loosely rockable upon said support in any position of the clamping elements. Y In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
` JOHN M. THOMPSON.
at the top and'closed at the bottom, a coiled compression spring seated in the hollow of said support, a reversely bent member having" one depending leg seated in the hollow of said support i upon said spring, a gate secured upon the other leg of said member rig- Y idly to swing therewith relatively to" said support, a pair of like hollowed clamping elements mating'` and having alined bores of *diiierentdiameters' of which the upper bore loosely fits upon said member and the lower bore loosely lits upon the upper part of said f support, the wall of the lower bore having anr annular recess, the outer wall of the supf 'port having an' annular flangeiitting loosely within' said recess, and adjustable tenseiial means for eempressngsaid kclamping elements together te cause them to clamp ,tightly apex; said member to allow said elefmexitswrcek regantes: winni the. gate horneais'o
