UNITED i STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Dmiin n. LANDIs, or ourense; irniNoIs.
. CURTAIN-STRETCHERQ To aZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it `known that I, DANIEL R. LNDIs, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of` Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain- Stretchers, of which the following isa specification. i i
My invention relates to `new and useful improvements in curtain stretchers, and has for its object the provision of a curtain stretcher having slidably` adjustable side members and cross bars. i Another object is the provision .in a curtain stretcher having slidably adjustable side members and cross bars of means for j clamping the same in adjusted position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. i
The invention will be best understood by reference to 'the accompanying y:drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is a plan view of my invention,
Fig. 2, is a side elevational view of the central clamping member used in my invention,
Fig. 3, is a sectional view taken on subw stantially line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4, is a sectional view taken on substantially line 4 4 of Fig. l.
The preferred form of construction comprises side members 6 and transversely eX- tending cross' bars 7. Extending transvei'sely of the side members 6 and preferably centrally thereof is a cross bar 8. These members, when assembled in the position shown in Fig.` 1, constitute a curtain stretcher upon which a curtain may be positioned for drying after the same has been washed, pins or nails 9 being projected through the side members and cross bars,
f upon which the curtain may be impinged.
specification of Letters Patent. Patent-.ed Feb. 1, 1921,
Application mea February 2, 1920.' seriai No.' 355,664.
retained in fixed relationwhile the curtain is positioned thereon.
The clam iner member com )risesl a casing 10, through which one` of the side mem bers 6 is thrust. The casing 10 is provided at one side with an under-hanging table 12. The cross members 7 and 8 may be positioned upon the under-hanging table 12. It is de signed to so construct the table 12 that the upper surface of the cross bars will lie in a plane above the base of the casing 10, so as to contact with the under surface of the .side i members 6. i Thekside members 6 are then securely clamped against the cross bars by means of a set screw 18 which is threadedl into a socket 17 formed upon the casing 10. A wear plate 1l is provided which is positioned between the side members and the set screw 18. This wear plate l1 is retained in position by means of a threaded stem la which projects through the upper' wall of the casing 10. Positioned upon the stem 14 i is a spring bar 15 `which serves to retain the member 11 incontact with the ends of the members18. `A wing nut `16 is provided by means of which the tension of the member 11 against the members 18 may be adjusted. As shown in Fig. 1, the clamping member which binds the cioss bar 8 is cut away. at
the inner side to allow the fastening of the curtain upon the nails or pins 9.
Formed upon the member 10 is a soclret 19 in which a set screw 2() is threaded. The
purpose of the set screw 20 is to retain the casing 10 in its position upon the side rail when adjustment ofthe cross bars is desired. In this way, when it is desired to adjust the width of the curtain stretcher the length of the adjustment may be retained, inasmuch as the set screw 20 engages the member 11 and securely clamps it against the side bar.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carry ing my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without de# parting from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of the construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope i of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a curtain stretcher havingcoperating side and cross members,
siidably mounted at their junctions, a casing slidably mounted on one of said members; a supporting table depending from said casing, arranged to clamp said member in direct contact With a coperating mem-v thereon; .said casing comprising an upper housing and a lower bracket, adapted to embrace and clamp said members in direct contact; screw means projecting through theupper Wall of-said casing adjacent one end thereof for locking said casing to one member, and other screw means projecting through said Wall on said casing vadjacent theopp'osite endthe'reof, for either locking the other member or for permitting sliding movement thereof relative to said casing, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a curtain stretcher having slidable side and cross members; a casing slidably mounted on one of said members; a Wear plate mounted in said casing; a supporting table depending from said casing, adapted to clamp said member in direct contact With the other member; means projecting through the upper wall of said casing to engage an end of said wear plate above said supporting table, to yieldabiy connect said members; and additional means projecting through the upper Wall of said casing engaging the other end of said wear plate to lock the casing in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciication in the presence of tivo subscribing Witnesses.
DANIEL R. LANDIS.
