STATES "ATENT FFIG JENS ERIKSON, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,793, dated March 14, 1876; application filed December 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JENS ERIKSON, of
Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Baby- Walker, Chair, Cradle, 800.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and vXtlOt description thereof, which will enable othersskilled in the art to .which it apper tains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which'- Figu e 1 is a perspective view of my improvtd baby-walker. Fig. 2 is a side eleva tion of the same with the seat inserted. Fig. 3 shows the same-transformed into a cradle.
Fig. 4 is a detailed view of one side of thebaby-walker, showing the arrangement of the rockers; and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan of the extension-seat used in combination with my device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention consists, first, in the improved construction of a baby-walker, hereinafter described; and. second, in the combination of the same with theadjnstable seat and side pieces, so that it may be used as a chair, cradle, crib, and for various other purposes, all as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, A are the legs of the babywalker, which are braced by the cross-pieces a a. Each of the legs is cut in two at b, and reunited by hinges c. B B, the top, which forms the support for the arms of the baby. It consists of two semicircular pieces, each resting upon two of the legs A, and secured together by hooks d.
To one of thepieces B may be hinged or otherwise secured a table, 0, for playthings, 850., belonging to the child.
To the ends of the legs are hinged the rockers D D. These, when turned down, as in Fig. 3, serve as rockers when my device is used as a cradle or rocking-chair. When it is to be used as a stationary chair, or as a crib, they may be laid flat on the floor; but
- when it is to be used as a baby-walker the rockers D are turned up against the legs A, as shown in Fig. 1, when the casters E upon the ends of the rockers D are placed in contact with the floor, thus permitting the per ambulation of the child that occupies the walker.
The rockers are kept in their proper posisition by means of hooks h.
When the walker is to be converted into a chair the seat F is placed upon the two uptended, makes the seat sufficiently long toform the bottom of the crib or cradle, which is constructed, after the seat has been inserted and extended, by simply unhooking the top pieces 13 B and turningthe sides formed by these and the upper halves of legs A down until they rest upon the ends of the seat, thus forming the ends of the bed or crib. The top pieces B have grooves -i, into which are now inserted the side. pieces H of the crib, which is then complete. By turning down the rockers D this may, at any time, be converted into a cradle.
The advantages of my improved device will be readily understood from the foregoing description. It combines cheapness of construction with simplicity and durability. It occupies but little space, and it can easily be converted by any one into either one of the many articles for the use of which it is designed.
Having thus described my invention, I claimand desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a baby-walker, the combination herei in described of the hinged legs A, top piece B B, having grooves Q, and hinged rockers D, having casters E, whereby it can be converted into a supporting-frame for a cradle, substantially as hereinbet'ore set forth. I
' 2. The combination, with a baby-walker provided with hinged legs A, top piece B B,
having grooves i, and hinged rockers D, having casters E, of the seat F, having slide or extension G, and the side pieces H, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JENS ERIKSON.
