Description

Feb. 18, 1930. E JENNY 1,747,900
CHAIR Filed Aug. 20, 192
Patented Feb. 18, 1930 EMIL G. JENNY, F SEATTLE, \VASHINGTON CHAIR Application filed August 20, 1928. Serial No. 800,909.
The invention is an article of furniture which may be supplied in separate pieces and the pieces readily assembled without glue,
' nails or hardware of any description.
The object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture that may be assembled and readily taken apart.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture which is formed of a plurality of separate parts and in which the individual parts are interchangeable with those of other pieces of furniture of the same design.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture that is made of a plurality of individual parts in which the parts are held together by a key.
And a still further object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture in which the parts may be readily separated and readily assembled.
\Vith these ends in view the invention embodies an article of furniture comprising side members, a seat. a back, and a key, said members being provided with interlocking slots and notches.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings. wherein.
Figure 1 is a side view of the chair.
Figure 2 is a view showing the design of the back.
Figure 3 is a view showing one of the side members.
Figure 4 is a view showing the design of the seat.
Figure 5 key.
Figure 6 is a rear view showing the manner in which the members are locked by the key.
Figure 7 is a view looking upward at the lower part of the seatalso showing the position of the locking key.
Figure- 8 is a side view of the device showing the legs provided with rockers to form a rocking chair.
In the drawings the device is shown as it would be made wherein numeral 1 indicates th f 3 I e design 0 is a view showing the design of the the side members.
meral 3 tl The sid in Figure I numeral 2 the back, nuie seat, and numeral 4 the key. e members 1 may be made as shown s 1 and 3 with legs 5, a comparatively wide section 6 forming the sides of the seat and arm rests and upwardly extending members The uppe vlded wit- '7 forming supports for the back. r ends of the members 7 are proh notches 8 which hold the upper end of the back and the section 6 is provided with a no forward e rear wlnc tch 9 at the front which holds the ml of the seat and a notch 10 at the h holds the key. It is understood that although this member is shown and described as sign may being of a particular shape its (19- be changed considerably and the notch may be arranged in any suitable manner. I
The back 2 is made as shown in Figure 2 with a comparatively flat panel having a tongue 11 13 in the the upper The centr vided with an opening at the bottom with notches 12 and sides thereof and projections 13 at outer ends with notches 14 in them. al portion of 15 as shown if desired.
It will be noted that the notches 14 will fit into the slots 8 at the upper ends of the members 7 of a comp aratively flat panel with projections 16 having slots 17 in them at the corners. At
the oppos ite end of the seat is an opening 18 having a slot 19 therein into which the tongue 11 of the back 2 is placed.
The key 4 is made as shown in Figure 5 of a comparatively flat piece of material with notches 2 notch 21 with the 0 adjacent the ends and a larger at the center and in the same side notches at the ends. This key is used for holding the device together and is placed un der the lower end of the back of the seat and into the notches 10 of the seat.
In a design shown in Figure 8- the legs 5 are provi ded with a rocker 22 so that the device may be used for a rocking chair and the rocke ends of th provided 1' may be made integral with the e legs, or the ends of the legs mav be the back may be prowith tongues 23 and 24 withinclined edges at the front and back which fit into similarly inclined slots in the rockers as shown. By inclinin the edges of the legs in this manner it will escen that they will positively hold the rockers without nails, screws or glue. Strips 25 may be placed at the sides of the rockers as shown in Figure 6 to reinforce them. In this design the side members are provided with curved members 26 at the ends of the portions forming the arms so that a gripping surface may be formed at the forward edge. This arrangement ma be used with the side members shown in 4 igure 1 if desired.
It will be understood that changes may be made in the construction without departing w from the spirit of the invention. One of which changes may be in the design or general arrangement of the entire device, another may be in the design or arrangement of either of the individual parts or of the notches for holding the parts together, and still another may be in the use of a key of another type.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device it may be supplied with the parts separated as shown in the Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 and may readily be assembled by placin the forward edge of the seat between the si e members with the notches 17 in the slots 9 and the back between the upper portion ofv the side members with the slots 14 in the notches 8 and with the tongue 11 in the notch 19 by placing it through the opening 18. The key 4 may then be inserted with the opening 21 passing over the tongue 11 and the notches 20 in the slots 10 in the backs of the side members. It will then be observed that the parts will be rigidly held together to form a solid chair or article of furniture. It will also be observed that the same arrangement may be used for different pieces of furniture as the general principle of the device is in the providing of notches and slots in which the parts are interlocked and held by a key.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A knock-down chair comprising side members with upwardly projecting extensions at the rear, said extensions having downwardly extending slots in their upper ends, the front and rear edges of the said side members having horizontal slots extending inward, a horizontal member forming a seat with projections at the forward edge extending into the slots of the side members and a slot at the rear with an opening narrower than the length of the said slot, said projections at the front overlapping and engaging the outer surfaces of the said side members, a back hav- I ing extensions at the upper corners engaging the slots in the upper ends of the extensions of the side members and overlapping EMIL G.
