This invention relates to tools for milling eye sockets in doll heads, and has for its primary object to provide certain improvements in a device of this kind shown and described in a pending application for patent filed by me on May 23, 1925, Serial No. 32,301. More particularly, it is the object of the present improvements to provide a simply constructed gauge device whereby the milling cutter operating through the neck of the doll head and the edge of the eye opening through the head wall may be accurately positioned relative to each other so that the walls of the respective eye sockets will bear acorresponding relation to the edges of the spaced eye openings. The importance of thus accurately forming the eye member receiving sockets with respect to the eye openings through which the eye members are visible will be appreciated, when it is observed that in accordance with recent developments in the art, the axis of the oscillatory eye setting is located with respect to the front wall of the doll head by the engagement of the eye members with the surfaces of the eye sockets. Therefore, in order that the'pupils on the surfaces of the eye members shall move in the oscillation of the setting in accurate registration with the minor vertical axis of the eye openings, it is essential that the edges of these eye openings shall be properly positioned with relation to the milling cutters.

It is a further general object of the invention to provide a tool of the above character in which the gauge means and the doll head may be very accurately and quickly positioned relative to each other and with respect to the milling cutter, without requiring the.

With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the improved tool for milling eye sockets in doll heads, and in the form, construction and several elements thereof as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and subsequently incorporated in the subjoined claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 thereof,
a part of the tool base or standard is illus- Q. trated at 5, said standard being provided at its upper ends with fixed and movable bearings 6 and 7 respectively, for the vertically positioned shafts 8 and 9, said shafts being provided upon their upper ends with the spherical milling cutters 10 which may be of any approved construction. The movable bearing 7 for the shaft 9 is adapted to be adjusted relative to the fixed bearing 6 of the shaft 8 to position the cutters 10 in predetermined spaced relation by means of the adjustable screw 11 mounted in the upper end of the standard 5. The shafts 8 and 9 may be operated by any suitable mechanism, such as that shown in my co-pending application above referred to.
To the rear side of the standard 5 an upwardly extending arm 12 is fixed at its lower end. The upper end of this standard is forked or bifurcated and upon the same one end of the gauge carrying member 13 is pivotally mounted on the pin 14. The arm 12 at one side thereof is formed with a finger 15 extending vertically above the pivot 14 and with the rear edge thereof the end of a stop screw 16 mounted upon the member 13 is adapted to' contact to limit the pivotal move ment of said member in one direction. A lug 17 formed on the rearwardly extending part of the member 13 is adapted to engage a lug 18 on the arm 12 to limit the pivotal movement of the member 13 in the opposite direction.
The other end of the member 13 is formed with a transversely disposed flange 19 having a rib 20 at its upper edge. As herein shown, the gauge consists of a metal plate 21 having a central opening therein, and to one side of this plate a relatively thin plate 22 of sheet steel is riveted or otherwise permanently secured. This latter plate is of appreciably greater width than the plate 21 and extends beyond the lower longitudinal edge of the latter plate,- such projecting part of "the plate 22 being bent rearwardly at a slight inclination with respect to the plane of the plate 21. The plate 22 also has an opening therein coinciding with the opening in the plate 21 and through these openings the clamping screw 23 is adapted to be inserted and threaded into an opening provided in the flange 19. The upper edges of the plates 21 and 22 are cut out or recessed as at 24: to receive the rib 20 whereby turning movement of the gauge member on the flange 19 is pre vented.
The lower edge portion of the gauge plate 22 is cut away to provlde a central comparatively deep recess 25 and the additional shallow recesses 26 at opposite sides of the central recess 25, the latter recesses having edge portions curved in conformity to the curvature of a part of the upper edge of an eye opening in the front wall of the doll head.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have illus' trated a doll head D which is adapted to be positioned over the shafts 8 and 9 when the member 13 is swung rearvardly in an inoperativeposition so that. the milling cutters '10 may thus be arranged through the neck opening of the doll head in contact with the lnner wall thereof at the respective eye openings which have been formed through said wall as indicated at (Z. It is of course, understood that the shaft 9 has first been adjusted so as to space the milling cutters apart in accordance with the known distance between the eye openings d. The member 13 is then swung over to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings so that the gauge plate 22 extends downwardly exteriorly of the doll head and closely adjacent to the front wall thereof, the bridge portion of the nose being accommodated in the central recess 25 of the *gauge plate. The, head is then adjusted by the operator until the curved edges of the two recesses 26 appear in parallel relation to the outer curved portions of the upper edges of the respective eye openings (Z in the head spherical milling cutters 10. lVhile the head is held in this position and the parallel relation between the upper edges of the eye openings and the edges of the recesses 26 of the gauge plate is maintained, the shafts 8 and 9 are-operated so that the cutters 1O simultaneously cut out the material of the head wall and form the internal concave sockets therein, such cutting or milling operation being continued until the edges of the recesses 26 in the gauge plate are closely contiguous to the surfaces of the milling cutters 10. Thus, the sockets associated with the spaced eye openings will be of exactly the same depth and their curved walls will bear a corresponding relation tothe edges of the spaced eye openings. It is accordingly apparent that when the oscillatory eye mounting is subsequently arranged in the doll head with the two eye members thereof engaged with the walls of the respective eye sockets, the centers of the eye pupils will accurately register with' the minor vertical axes of the respective eye openings, it beingof course, understood that the pupils on the surfaces of the eye members have been accurately located so that they bear the same relation to the axis of oscillation of the eye setting. Thus, after the eye setting has been attached so as to freely oscillate when the doll head is tilted, the eye members moving with respect to the edges of the eye openings will accurately simulate the opening and closing movements of the human e e. Y In Fig. 4 of the drawings, I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the tool wherein only a single operating shaft 8' and a single milling cutter 10 is provided, said shaft being arranged in a perpendicular position, the gauge member is mounted and arranged for movement into and out of operative relation with the milling cutter in the same manner as above described. However, in this embodiment'of the invention, the gauge plate 22 is of much greater length than the plate 22 above. described and is provided in its lower edge with the central recess 25 and at each side thereof with the longitudinally elongated shaft 8 and with the edge of the recess 25 in parallel relation to the upper edge of said eye opening while the edge of one of the recesses 26' at the outer end thereof is in parallel relation with the upper edge of the other eye opening. After one socket has thus been milled, the head is shifted as indicated in dotted lines in the drawings, so that its vertical center line is positioned at the opposite side of the shaft 8 and the upper edge of the other eye opening located in parallel relation to the edge of the recess 25 while the edge of the eye opening which has already been provided with the eye receiving socket is positioned in parallel relation with the edge of the other recess 26 in the gauge plate at the outer end thereof. While this latter form of the tool is simpler and therefore, less expensive to manufacture, it will be evident that much more time would be consumed in separately milling the two eye sockets than when they are simultaneously milled by means of the tool shown in Fig. 2, which latter tool will possibly also operate with greater accuracy.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of operation of the several described forms of my new milling tool will be clearly and fully understood. It will be seen that this operation which has heretofore been executed before the doll head has been completely closed, may be expeditiously carried out and the sockets accurately formed by operation through the neck opening of the doll head and after said head has otherwise been completely closed. Since, I show a gauge device in a tool of this character in my pending application for patent, and have broadly claimed the same therein, in the present application, no claim is made to this broad or fundamental idea, but only to the novel characteristics of the new gauge device as above described and wherein the subject matter of this application isdistinguished from the disclosure contained in the pending application. However, it is to be borne in mind that in the practice of my present improvements, the device might be exemplified in numerous other alternative mechanical forms, and I accordingly reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes therein as may be fairly incorporatecl within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A tool for forming eye member'receiving sockets in doll heads including a rotary milling cutter adapted for insertion through the neck opening of a doll head in operative relation to an elliptical eye opening in the frontwall thereof, and a gauge plate movably mounted with respect to the milling cutter and adapted to be positioned exteriorly of the front wall of the doll head, said plate having a curved edge adapted to be positioned in contiguous parallel relation to an edge of one eye opening in the doll head wall where.- by the longitudinal axis of said eye opening is disposed at right angles to a perpendicular plane normal tothe axis of rotation "of the milling cutter.
2. A tool for forming eye member receiving sockets inthe wall of a doll head includ ing a rotary milling cutter adapted to be positioned in operative relation to an elliptical shaped eye opening in the head wall at the inner side thereof, and a gauge plate movably supported and adapted to be positioned exteriorly of the front wall of the doll head, said plate having spaced curved edges adapted to be positioned contiguous to one edge of the respective eye openings and in parallel relation therewith to thereby dispose the longitudinal axis of one of said openings at right angles to a perpendicular plane normal to the axis of rotation of the milling cutter.
8. A tool for forming eye member receivmg sockets in the wall of a doll head including a rotary milling cutter adapted to be positioned in operative relation to an elliptical shaped eye opening in the head wall at the inner side thereof, an arm pivotally mounted for movement relative to the milling cutter, a gauge plate carried by said arm and supported in one position of the arm externally of the doll head wall, said plate having. spaced curved edges adapted to be positioned contiguous to the upper edge of a each of the eye openings in parallel relation therewith to thereby dispose the longitudinal axis of one of the eye openings at right angles to a perpendicular plane normal to the axis of rotation of the milling cutter.

A tool for forming eye member receiving sockets in the wallof a doll head including spaced rotary milling cutters adapted to be positioned in operative relation to spaced elliptical shaped eye openings in the head wall at the inner side thereof, a movably mounted gauge plate adapted to be positioned externally of the doll head wall and having spaced curved edges spaced from the respective milling cutters, said curved edges adapt ed to be positioned contiguous to portions of the upper, edges of the respective eye open-' ings in parallel relation therewith to thereby dispose the longitudinal axis of the respective openings at right angles to perpendicular planes normal to the axis of rotation of the milling cutters whereby eye member receiving sockets are simultaneously formed in the operation of said cutters with the walls thereof in corresponding relation to the edges of the eye openings.

A tool for forming eye member receiving sockets in the wall of adoll head including spaced rotary'milling cutters adapted to be positioned throughthe neck opening of the doll head in operative relation to spaced elliptical shaped eye openings in the head wall, an arm pivotally mounted at one of its ends in spaced relation to the milling cutters, a gauge plate carried by the other end of said arm and supported in one position of the arm externally of the doll head wall, said plate centrally thereof having a recess to receive the nose bridge of the head wall and provided at each side of said recess with a curved ed e, said curved edges adapted to be positioned conti uous to the upper edges of the respective eye openings and in parallel relation therewith and thereby dispose the longitudinal axes of said openings at right angles :;to perpendicular planes normal to the axes of rotation of the milling cutters to simultaneously form the sockets in the head wall with the walls of said sockets in corresponding relation to the edges of the respective open- :ings.
6.111 a tool for sin'iultaneously forming spaced eye receiving sockets in the wall of a doll head, spaced semi-spherical milling eutters adapted to be operatively positioned in opposed relation to spaced elliptical shaped eye openings in the head wall, and a gauge member adapted to be positioned at the outer side of the head wall and having spaced sighting means to be disposed with relation to parts of the wall surface contiguous to the respective eye openings and thereby locate the milling cutters with respect to said openings to produce eye member receiving sockets having their centers located in accurate coinciding relation with the centers of said openings.
7. In ,a tool for simultaneously forming spaced eye receiving sockets in the wall of a doll head, spaced semi-spherical milling cutiters adapted to be operatively positioned in opposed relation to spaced elliptical shaped eye openings in the head Wall, and a gauge member adapted to be positioned at the outer side of the head wall, said gauge member having spaced curved parts adapted to be disposed in parallel relation to the upper edges of the respective eye openings to thereby locate the milling cutters in operative position relative to said openings and produce eye member receiving sockets in the head wall having their centers in accurate coinciding relation with the centers of the elliptical shaped eye openings.
