Description
W. HANLEY Feb. 18, 1930.
ARTICLE HOLDING BRACKETFOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH CARD TABLES Filed Nov. 23, 1927 INVENTOR v ATTORN EYS Patented Feb 18, 1930 WILLIAM HANLEY, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR 'I'O FERGUSON BEOTH- ERS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF HOIBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, A CORJPORATION OF NEW JERSEY ARTICLE-HOLDING- BBJACKET FOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH CARD TABLES Application filed November 23, 1927. Serial No. 235,286.
It is desirable that the tops of. card tables be kept as free as possible of obstructions, such as drinking glasses, smokers articles,
etc., especially where there is a liability to) mar or otherwise damage the table tops spring clamp is adapted to'enter the kerf in the top side of the table top frame, within which kerf the edge of the table top cover is secured, and the long lower jaw of the clamp is adapted to engage the bottom side of the go table top frame. A stop is provided on the lower jaw in position to en age the outer side of the table top frame to rmly support the bracket in its adjusted osition and, preferably, another stop is provided on the lower jaw in position to engage the inner side of the table top frame for preventing the unintentional upward displacement of the bracket.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 represents a detail top'plan of a table top with my bracket removably secured thereto.
Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section taken 1n the plane of the lineIII-III of Fig. 1, looklng in the direction of the arrows.
The table top frame is denoted by land the kerf in its top side for receiving and securing the edge of the table top cover 2, is
denoted by 3.
The article holding bracket is herein shown as being formed to support two articles, as for is provided with a spring clamp comprising a short upper jaw 10 for engaging the top side of the table top frame and a long lower jaw 11 for engaging the bottom side of the table top frame. The upper jaw 10 is provided with two depending ears 12, 12 and the lower jaw 11 is provided with two uprising cars 13, 13. A pin 14 passes through these cars for pivoting the jaws together. The spring means tending to close the jaws is herein shown as a coil spring 15 surrounding the pivot pin 14, one branch 16 of the spring engaging the upper jaw 10 and the other branch 17 of the spring engaging the lower jaw 11.
One of the uprising ears 13 may be provided with an extension 18 arranged in position to engage a stop 19 on one of the depending ears 12 to limit the closing movement of the aws. j
The short upper jaw 10 of the clamp is provided with a downwardly turned lip 20 adapted to enter the kerf 3 in the top side of the table top frame 1 when the bracket is attached to the table. The uprising cars 13 of the long lower jaw 11 of the clamp serve as a stop to engage the outer side of the table top frame for firmly supporting the bracket in its proper position. The lower jaw 11 may also be provided with an upwardly turned lip 21 acting as a'stop for engaging the inner side of the tabletop frame to prevent upward displacement of the bracket.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided an article holding bracket which may be readily attached to the table top at any desired point, without danger of marring or otherwise damaging the same.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not intend to be limited vto the particular embodiment herein shown and described, butwhat I claim is 1. An article holding bracket having means for removably securing it to a card table top frame, said means including a clamp'having a short upper and a long lower jaw pivoted together, and springmeanstending to close the a ws, the short upper jaw having a downwardly turned lip adapted to enter the cover receiving and securing kerf in the top side of the table top frame and the long lower jaw having a stop adapted to engage the outer side of the table top frame to hold the bracket firmly in its adjusted position, said lower jaw also having a stop adapted to engage the inner side of the table top frame to prevent the unintentional upward displacement of the bracket.
2. An article holding bracket having means for removably securing it to a card table top frame, said means including a clamp having a short upper and a long lower jaw pivoted together, and spring means tending to close the jaws, the short upper jaw having a downwardly turned lip adapted to enter the cover receiving and securing kerf in the top side of the table top frame and the long lower jaw having a stop adapted to engage the outer side of the table top frame to hold the bracket firmly in its adjusted position, said lower jaw also having an upwardly turned lip adapted to engage the inner side of the table top frame to prevent the unintentional upward displacement of the bracket.
3. An article holding bracket having means for removably securing it to a card table topframe, said means including a clamp having a short upper and a long under jaw pivoted together, spring means tending to close the jaws, the short upper jaw having an element adapted to enter the cover receiving and retaining kerf in the 'top side of the table top frame and the long lower jaw having a stop adapted to engagethe outer side of the table top frame to hold the bracket firmly in its adjusted position, and means other than the jaws themselves for limiting the closing movement of the jaws.
4. An article holding bracket having means for removably securing it to a card table top frame, said means including a clamp having a short upper jaw provided with depending ears and a long lower jaw provided with uprising ears pivoted to said depending ears, spring means tending to close the jaws, a stop on one of the depending ears and a coacting extensionon one of the uprising ears to limit the closing movement of the jaws, said upper aw having a downwardly turned lip adapted to enter the v cover receiving and retaining kerf in the top side of the table top frame, the said uprlsing ears serving as a stop to engage the outer side of the table top frame for firmly supporting the bracket in its proper position, and the lower jaw having an upwardly turned lip acting as a stop for engaging the inner side of the table top frame to prevent upward displacement of the bracket.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 21st day of November, 1927. I
WILLIAM HANLEY..
