Patented Marchl, 1876. $905 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER W. BRINKERHOFF, OF UPPER SANDUSKY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,769, dated March 14, 1876; application filed March '7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER W. BRINK- ERHOFF, of Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fruit- Jars and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part otithis specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 ot the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my fruit-jar-cover clamp, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modification thereof, and Fig. 4 a vertical sectional view.
This invention has relation to means for se curing and hermetically sealing covers on preserve jars and cans; and the nature of my invention consists in the employment of adjust able metal binding-clasps, in combination with flanged or shouldered rims on the preserving-vessels, and with lids or covers, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawing, Figs. 1 and 2, A designates part of a preserving-vessel, which may be made of any suitable material, and which has a mouth surrounded by a shoulder, a, inside of which is an annular groove and an annular lip. B designates a cover or lid, which is surrounded by a flange or rim, and constructed with a central depression, I). This cover is preferably made of sheet metal, and when it is in place on the preserving-vessel its flange or rim will be-embedded in a suitable cement in the groove surrounding the mouth of said vessel.
The clasp which holds the cover B down in its place is preferably made of spring-wire of a suitable gage, and is composed of two pieces,
of the clasp are adjusted in their places under the shoulder a the hooked portion 01 is forcibly drawn into its place by a lateral movement, and is tightly held by the springing of the wires caused by the eccentricity of the loop 0 At the same time that the hooked piece dis drawn home the hooks c 0? will be caused to hug theshoulder a tightly and force the cover upon the jar.
Figs. 3 and 4 show a modification of the,
clasp of Figs. 1 and 2 applied to a glass cover,
which is seated upon a gasket, 6, on the top ot' the jar. The only difference between the clasp of Figs. 3 and 4t and the clasp of Figs. 1 and 2 isthat in the former the eye 0 is omitted and a finger-piece is formed on the hook of the piece 61.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clasp for a preserving-vessel, formed oftwo pieces, 0 d, bent, connected together, and hooked, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER W. BRINKERHOFF.
Witnesses:
J. M. KIRBY, M. H. BRINKERHOFF.
