Description

T. BABIN Feb. 18, 1930.
LIFT PUMP Filed July 26, 1927 Patented Feb. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT LIFT PUMP Application filed July 26,
The invention relates to lift pumps and has for its objectto provide a device of this character comprising a cylindrical casing in which is slidably mounted a piston carried by a rod, and which piston comprises a piston rod bent at its lower end to form a horizontally disposed loop, and on which loop the piston is disposed end limited in its downwardmovement, and to loosely mount said piston on the piston rod whereby the piston may tilt upwardly during the downward strokes and will positively seat on the loop during the upward strokes.
A further object is to make the lower end 5 of the pump casing downwardly inclined in relation to the axis of the casing whereby when the casing rests on the bottom of a receptacle or other object, water may easily enter the casing. Also to provide the lower end of the casing with a valve seat, with which a pivoted valve within the casing cooperates, whereby upon an upward movement of the piston, water will be sucked into the casing, and upon a downward movement of the piston water will be prevented from being forced out of the casing.
A further object is to provide the upper end of the casing above the discharge spout with a transversely disposed U-shaped member extending through the casing and between the arms of which the piston rod is slidably mounted and guided.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pump.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the pump.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the piston and piston rod.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the pump.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the elongated cylindrical pump casing, the upper end 2 of which is preferably 1927. Serial No. 208,509.
flared and is provided with an outwardly extending discharge spout 3, through which water is discharged during the pumping operation. Disposed within the casing 1 isa piston 4 preferably formed from metal, and which piston has one of its sides bulged-up wardly at 5 and provided with a radially disposed elongated aperture 6, through which the piston 'rod 7 extends. The lower end of the piston rod 7 terminates in a horizontally disposed loop 8, on which the piston 4 seats during the upward movement of said piston and piston rod, during a pumping operation. It will be noted that by providing the elongated aperture 6 that during the downward movement of the piston, said piston may tilt upwardly for a considerable distance, thereby preventing the compression of water below the piston and above the hinged valve 9, and at the same time allows relatively large particles of foreign matter to pass through the pump to a position above the piston rod. Upon the upward movement of the piston rod the water is lifted above the piston and discharged through the disfrom damage at all times, and is positioned where it can be easily cleaned. The piston rod 7 is preferably provided with an enlargement 12 above the piston 4 for limiting any upward movement of the piston and extends upwardly and terminates in a handle member 13 above the pump casing as a whole where it can be easily grasped by the periphery of the portion 2 of the casing,
therefore it will be seen that the guide may be easily and quickly placed in position or removed therefrom and the guide can be formed '7 from relatively heavy yvire, thereby addi tionally cheapening" the construction of the device. p l The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful i'sz' The combination in a lift pump comprising a casing, a flap valve in the lower-"endof said casing, a piston sl idablymountedgin said casing, a piston rod carried by said piston and extending upwardly and terminating above the casing, of a U-shaped guide for said piston rod, said guide extending through the casing adjacent its upper end, said guide having its arms extending transversely through the casing and. at opposite sides of the rod, the ends of said armsbeing bent. to angular position in engagement With the outerperiphery of the casing. o
