Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 9, 1917. Serial No. 167,490.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS HADFORD, a
citizen of Canada, residing at Carmengay,
in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pumps and has for its object the provision of a pump of simple construction in which the parts may be readily assembled and by which a large volume of water may be readily raised to a desired height without the expenditure of a great amount of labor. I
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a pump embodying my invention with one side plate removed;

Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the line In carrying out my invention, I employ a casing consisting of a front plate 1 and back plate 2, the back plate having sides 3 formed therewith and the front plate 1 being bolted upon the said sides, as will be readily. understood. A bottom wall 4 may be provided between the lower ends of the front and back plates and the lower portions of the front and back plates as well as the bottom and side walls are provided with openings 5 forming inlets for the water. Upon reference to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be noted that the side walls of the casing converge through their intermediate portions and at the upper extremities of the converging portions are preferably merged into a head 6 to and over which is secured a cap 7. Outlet passages 8 are formed through the head 6 and from the cap 7 a conduit or discharge pipe 9 leads to the point of use. A plunger rod 10 extends through the center of the cap 7 and centrally through the head 6 so as to be guided thereby, the lower end of the plunger rod playing-in a bracket or guide 11 provided between the front and back plates on the line of the casing at any convenient point below the working chamber. A substantially triangular plunger 12 is secured upon the plunger rod and may be an integral casting fitted between and secured to the sections of the plunger rOd, as clearly shown in Fig.
The base of. the triangular plunger is adapted to rest upon the guide or lug 11 when the chamber is not in use, and the apex of the triangular plunger is at the upper end of the plunger so that the plunger will conform approximately to the shape of the working chamber when permitted by the converging portions of the side walls 3 and the squeezers or lifters 13. These squeezers or lifters are swinging plates which are hinged or fulcrumed upon the side walls of the casing, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, and extend over to and bear upon the sides of the plunger, the ends of the said plates which bear upon the plunger being free. Springs 14 are interposed between the easing walls and the lifters so as to bear upon the lifters and hold them closely to the plunger so that they will be in contact with the plunger at all stages of its movement. Valves 15 are provided upon these lifters and so arranged that upon downward movement of the plungers and the lifters the valves will be opened to permit the flow of water into the space or chamber above the lifters while on the upward movement of the lifters the valves will be "closed and the liquid will then be lifted or forced through the passages 8. Suitable packing will, of
course, be provided along the edges of the plunger and the said lifter or squeezer plates so that there will be no leakage of water and the desired pressure upon the same will be attained. The lifter or squeezer plates 13 may be pivoted or hinged to the casing in any desired manner and a convenient method is that illustrated consisting of enlargements 16 upon the plates, circular in cross section, and adapted to engage the shelves or hooklike rest 17 in the casing. At the upper ends of the outlet passages 8 are valves 18 which will be so arranged that they will open when the lifter plates are in their highest position and closed when said plates are in their lowest position.
It is thought the operation of the pump will be readily understood. On the upstroke of the plunger the lifter plates will be raised, as shown in Fig. 9, and a partial vacuum will be created below the plunger Patented May let, 1918.
and said plates so that Water will. rush through the inlet openings 5 to fill the suction chamber. 011 the ensuing down stroke of the plunger the lifter plates will return to the position shown in Fig. 1 under the influence of gravity andmthe springs 15% so that the water will exert sutlicient force upon the valves 15 to open the same whereupon the Water will flow into the working chamber above the plunger and the litters. On the next upstroke o l the plunger, the water above the same and above the lifters will be expelled through the outlet passages 8 and the valves 18 and will eventually find its way through the conduit 9 to the point or discharge. It will be readily noted that my pump is exceedingly simple in the construetion and arrangement of its several parts so that it may be produced at a low cost and the parts readily assembled. By its use a large volume of water may he quickly and easily raised as a comparatively small plunger will sufice and the litter or squeezer plates will furnish eXtensiv-eu'aterengaging and lifting surfaces.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: p
1. In a pump, the combination of a easing, a plunger mounted to reciprocate therein, anl lifters mounted upon the sides of: the casing for swinging movement and bearing at their inner ends upon the sides of the plunger.
2. In a pump, the combination of a casing, an upwardly tapered plunger mounted to reciprocate therein, and litters mounted at their outer ends for swinging movement upon the sides of the casing and having their inner ends bearing freely upon the sides of the plunger.
3. In a pump, the combination of a casing having an inlet at its lower end and an Copies of this patent may be obtaineti for outlet at its upper end, an upwardly tapered plunger mounted to reciprocate within the casing between the inlet and the outlet, a litter plate mounted upon the side of the casing for swinging movement and having its free end bearing upon the tapered plunger, and a valve on the said lifter arranged to permit flow on the downward movement of the lifter but prevent flow on the upward movementof the same.

In a pump, the combination of a casing,a plunger mounted to reciprocate within the easing, a litter mounted for swinging movement upon the side of the casing and having its free end bearing upon the plunger, and a spring disposed be tiveen the casing and said lifter and tending to hold the same in a lowered position.
5. A pump comprising a casing having an inlet in its lower end and having its side walls converging upwardly in their intermediate portions, outlets in the upper end of the casing above said upwardly converging portions, a cap secured upon and over the upper end of the casing, a discharge conduit leading from the said cap, upwardly opening valves at the upper ends of the outlets, a plunger rod extending through and guided by the upper end oi the casing, a guide for said plunger rod in the lower portion of the casing, an upwardly tapered plunger upon the said rod, litters hinged at their outer ends upon the side walls of the casing and hearing at their inner free ends upon opposite sides of the tapered plunger, upwardly, opening valves on said litters, and springs disposed between the side walls of the casing and the said litters and bearupon the litters to hold them in engage mentwith the plunger.
