This invention relates to improvements `in car construction.
In -railwaycars it is highly desirable to connect the body .and truck :holsters vso that they :will notseparate inservice in the event 'of collision, thereby ,preventing telescoping 2o securely "locked to prevent accidental reymoval. v
A funther'ob-j ect vof gthe invention Vis to` provide ,fa bolster I'connection tor railway cars, includingfa'gsolid locking pin :headed at4 one Y fend and held yagainst `removal vby a locking key extending through-fthe oppositeend of the pin. Y
A istill further object of the `invention fis v:to :provide abolster locking center. pin so l designed-.fas w,to readily .permit separation of the body -fand .truck holsters Wthout'the `necessity of obtaining access tov either Vthe up- 4per side of fthe Ibod-y bolster or the under- `side'otlthe stnuolbolster, :after :the @pin has once been applied,"by ,merely withdrawing 'the k'locking Vmeans associated f therewith, the
-:lock-ing 4means :being readilyV accessible at yone sidenotthe lrbolster. 7

The body-'bolster l0 is made up 'of sections, which are secured tothe spaced center or :drat silfls 1-2 of the raiLW-ay car-underframe 1 vstructure. As shown7 top .and bottom plates 13 -a-re employed which are disposedva-bove and below the .draft sills, the plates being connected bythe usual spaced diaphragm members le at opposite :sides of the center sills. 'Between the'center sills Yl 2,.tvl1eusual bolster Vtiller casting is-employed. VBetween the bottom plate 13 o-thebolster afnd'the filler casting is interposed `a Jrlller plate 16,
which :also abuts ythe bottom flanges 'of y.the draft sills 12.
The body bolster is provided With :the usual `center bearing -inember .17, which has an annular projecting portion cooperating with the center bearingvmember 18 of fthe vtruck bolster. `As show-n, the fcenter Ybearing member 18V ofthe'truclrybolsteris :provided bolstergcasting which carriesthe center bearing plate yor member. As shown, the casting l1 is'providedwith a pocket 19st the upper l side-thereof,-Wl1ich receives lthe center lbear ing-member l-8v,-a fil-lerlplate 2O beinginterposed betWeen-thebo'ttom Wall 'of' thepocket and `the :center @bearing memben Therbody and ytruck Ibolstersare provided with aligned center :.pinereceivin-gopenings i pin. The'opening'g21 of the casting lliis enlarged at the v lower end, @as indicated at 22, to provide a pocket or seat. The opening 21 of the casting 15 of the body bolster is also enlarged at the upper end toxprovide a pocket Y 23. As shown, the pocket 2Sv is relatively deep portion and is provided with a'head25rat the bottom end. At the free end, the shank of the pin'fA is" provided withVV a Vtransverse opening 26, which is of rectangularsection,
las shown. When the pin lA is in positiomthe head thereoic isdisposed within the pocket 22 of the truck bolster castingll, with the" ishank extending through the aligned open- `pinA.Y l l Thecenter pin A is lockedagainst rem'ovings 21-21 of the truck and body holsters. In'thi's connection, it is pointed out thatthef.v bearing members 17 and 18 of the'body and Vtruck bolsters are also provided with openf` lings'to accommodate the shankof the center *I al from the body and truckbolsters by the keyV B,"whic'h is in the form of la heavy bar f oferectangularcross section.v V/As shown, when the parts a-re assembled, the-key/B extends through the opening 26 at the free end of the Y "centerv Apini/.51', the side wall'211 of the pocket 23fbeing vertically slotted, as indicated at 27,y

` As' will be evident, my improved center locking pin may be readily connected. to the body and truck bolsters of cars of various ltypes, including those having either Ifouror six-wheel trucks. In the'case of four-wheel trucks, the pin may berreadily inserted from the bottom of the truck bolster', inasmuch as f the center pin. When the ,pin -isfapplied to the siX-wheel type of truck, wherein the Y Y' -central axle isdisposed immediately below the center pin-*receiving opening, the center pin isinserte'd'before the parts'ofthe truck l have been'colnp'letely assembled. Withthe center'pin thns placed in position, the body [bolster vis assembled with'the truckbolster and the pin engaged within the opening 21 ofy v ',the'body bolster; Afterthe partshave been .thus engaged, the key B isy inserted through the opening-28 Yof the center sill 12 and :engaged within the opening 26.V at the free end of the center pin, the proper number/ofV shims C having first been placed in position' aboutthe shank of the center pin. When the key B has been engaged with theV center pin,
the pin .is locked to the body and truckbolsters, upward movement ofthe pin with rel spect to thetruck bolsterbeingV prevented by` l the head 25 and downward movement of the'r prevented by. the key B which projectsbeyond thev sidewalls of the'opening 21 inthe 'cast-'r ing 15. The keyis then locked vbyithe `bolt in rsuch a manner as to preventlongit'dinal pin with respect lto the body ybolster being ico` '3lY andfisthus anchored to thefcenter sill. 12- i VVWhen it is desired toseparate the 'body l Vchorin'gv bolt 31- is irst removed, and the key bolster may then readily bef-liftedffromfthe "and truck 4holsters ofthe railway car, the antruck''bolster'or the centerjpin Amay be'removed Y lithdrawing the saine from'thebottom'sid'e'fof thetruck holstein,

I claim:
1. In car construction, the combination With body and truck bolsters having aligned center pin-receiving openings, the opening of the truck bolster being enlarged at the bottom end to provide a pocket and said body bolster having' a shoulder adjacent the opening thereof; of a headed pin connecting said bolsters, the head of the pin being seated in said pocket and having shouldered engage ment With the inner Wall of the pocket; a key extending through the free end of the pin and extending through a Wall member of the body bolster; and spacing means interposed between the key and the shoulder adjacent the pin-receiving opening of the body bolster.
2. In car 'construction7 the combination With body and truck bolsters having cooperating center bearing portions; of a center pin extending through said bolsters for connecting the same, said pin having shouldered engagement With one of said bolsters to hold the same against removal in one direction, the other bolster having an abutment shoulder; a looking element extending through said last named bolster and the corresponding end of the pin for preventing removal of the center pin in a reverse direction; and removable spacing means between said looking element and the shoulder of the last named bolster to hold the pin in shouldered engagement With said first named bolster.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 15th day of June 1928.
EDWARD H. LEHMAN.
