This invention relates to new and useful improvements in beds, and particularly to folding beds, of the type which include a base supported on'casters, and having the 5 spring bottom frame movably connected thereto and arranged to be swung into vertical position, at times, and into horizontal position at times.

i In beds, heretofore, of this type, persons l have suffered injury, due to the fact that the spring bottom frames were not properly connected to the bases, and when attempting to swing such frames downwardly, or upwardly, said frames would fall onto the persons.

It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a bed of this character wherein the spring bottom frame is so mounted on the base that when swinging the same either upwardly or downwardly, the center 2o of gravity will be also shifted, with the result that said frame will not be liable to fall on the operator.

Another object is to provide a bed of this character which is simple in construction, strong and durable, and which can be easily and safely operated.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a base formed from strips of angle metal, and having approximately rectangular outline. The corners of said base, or frame, are connected together by means of the metal plates 11, and

carried by each of these plates is a caster 12, which support the base, and permit move'- ment thereof from place to place. Disposed on the horizontal wings of the end members of the base frame, is a carriage 13, which includes the bars 13 arranged to slide through openings 14, formed in the vertical wing of an end of the rear side member of said base. The rear end of each of the bars 13 is turned upwardly, at right angles, as at 15, and to these upturned ends vis secured the head 16, of the bed. The inner end of each of the bars 13 is folded over laterally, as at 17, and rotatably supported within the lower portion of the fold are two lrollers 18, which 6 bear on the upper face of the said horizontal wing of the end member of the base frame.

On one side of the folded portion of the bar 18, and depending below said wing, is a tab 19, which carries aroller 20, said roller engaging with the lower face of said wing, whereby to maintain the bar in proper sliding engagement with said wing, and effectively preventing tilting movement of said bar, with relation to the wing. Formed on the inner end of the bar, and extending verticallytherefrom, is a standard 21, to which is pivotally ,connected one of the side rails 22, of the bed bottom, or spring frame 23. On each of the side rails 22, outwardly of the. pivotal connection with the standard 21, is a collar 24, and pivotally connected at one end to this collar, and at its other end to one of the front corner plates 11, is a link 25. Pivotally connected to the outer end of each of the side rails 22, are the links 26, and pivotally connected to the other ends of said links is a supportingY leg 27, which, when thev bottom frame is in lowered, or horizontal position, is a'daptedfto stand vertically beyond the transverse spring carrying bar 28, which connects the outer ends of the side rails 22, and when said leg is in such position the weight of theouter end of the bed bottom frame rests the other link performs the function of a brace. These links, together with the leg 27, are adapted to be folded back against the side rail of the bed, before the spring frame is swung into vertical position. It willbe noted that-k the carriage v13 has been moved rearwardly on the base frame, so that the head member 16 is in proper spaced relationto the adjacent end of the spring bottom frame.

The head end of the bottom vframe rests :onlits pivotal connections with the standards 21, while the foot end of vthe frame'is supported by the legs 27. To fold the bed, the operator grasps the transverse bar 28, and, after having folded the legs 27 against the/rails 22, swings the spring bottom frame upwardly, on the fpivotal connections thereof Vwith the standards 21.
