HOMINY-MAGHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17 ,469, dated June 2, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR F. MAYHEW, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, 1n the State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvements in Hominy-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptlon of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specificatlon, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the machine when ready for operation. A, is the concave supported by the frame L, L, L; G, feed hopper; H, discharge spout; I the driving pulley.
. Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing the concave A, cylinder B, one of the rings or divisions C, with the adjustable opening D, the adjusting or regulating apparatus E and screen F.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal projection of the machine when opened and the cylinder B taken out.
Fig. 4 represents the cylinder B, with beaters b, b, b, b, &c., driving pulley I, and small pulley K for operating feed apparatus.
The concave A, may be constructed of wood lined with sheet metal, or of metal entirely; of the form of a frustum of a cone; divided into halves longitudinally and into compartments formed by the rings 0, C, C, C, which have adjustable openings. rings fit closely to the cylinder (but permit it to revolve freely) and are designed to confine the grain within the action of the beaters Z), Z), Z), 6, &c.
The openings D, D, D, D, through the rings or divisions O, C, C, C, are designed to permit the passage of the grain through the machine, the length of time in which it'is These passing through, being regulated by the adjusting or regulating apparatus E, the side of which forms a part of the ring or divisions G, C, C, C, and also forms a rib against the inner surfaceof the concave which may be raised or depressed by means of the thumb screw, this being necessary from the fact that some kinds of grain require much more time in hulling than others, and also that a quick motion hulls the grain more rapidly than a slow motion. The slide being raised retards the progress of the grain, and being depressed permits it to pass more freely.
The grain, as it is fed into the machine at hopper G, by any suitable feed apparatus, is driven by the heaters b, b, b, b, &c., of the rapidly revolving cylinder B, against the sides of the concave A, the conical shape of which gives it an inclination toward the first ring C, through which it passes by the opening D, into the second compartment where it is again operated upon by the beaters which hull and clean it as it is driven through the adjustable opening D, D, D, D, consecutively until it is discharged through the spout H, thus feeding, hulling, cleaning and discharging the grain by a continuous operation. 7
What I claim as my invention in the above described machine and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination and arrangement of the concave A, rings or divisions C, C, C, C, and the adjustable openings D, D, D, D, when constructed and operated substantially as set forth.
OSCAR F. MAYHEW. Witnesses:
NATHAN T. CoFFIN, H. T. LAWTON.
