Description

To all whom c't 'nya-y` cencern Be it'` known that I, JOHN K. Lnnmqof Maurer- 'town,in the county of Shenandoah and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hominy-Mills; and4 do hereby del clare that `the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying `drawing and to the letters of reference C marked thereon, making af part of this specification. f t a r The `naturefof my invention cons-ists'in thecon-I struction and arrangement ci' a hominy-niill as Ywill behereinafter fully set forth.
" In order toenable others skilled in the art to4 which lny invention `appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and. operation, referring toV the vannexed drawing,in which; C l l Figure 1 is a side view,'and t Figure `2, a longitudinal vertical'sec fon of my inachine.V l l `Figure 3 is an'enlarged side view of one of -the knives wbichcut thecorn, and
Fignrefl is an enlarged Across-section or end view `of the cylinder inV which the revolv'ngfau is placed.
1 A represents the frame of Vmy machine,in theup'-` lperpart of which is the hopper B. l
-The com'is `fed through this hopper in inder O placedlengthwise in the frameA'.
l The inner surface of this cylinder is' grooved or corruto the cylries of diagonal 0r winding sharpridges, against which the'corn: willhe cnt by the knives D D. Thoseknives are'-triangul'arinshapa4 with a slight henagonal rise an the side, as shown `in fig. 3, and have a. square hole thronghthe center. 'lheyare placed upon a square revolving shaft, (l, which receives' its motion from a crank-shaft, b, having a cog-wheel, d, which. gears with a pinion lupon the end ofthe shaft a. By the action of the revolving knives l) D on the corn against the ridges on the inside of the cylinder, the corn passes out of said cylinder in the shape otihulled honiinylthrough the4 aperture e, and falls into the revolving screen E, placed below and parallel with `the cylinder. p V t The screen E is composed of a shaft, f, yprovided with a winding auger-shaped flange, g, around which u is stretched lthe wire-cloth hik;- t
That portion, h, (nearly Vouehalf,) o nearest the end where the' hulled hominy enters the p screen lis so line that only the meal and hominywhich istoolfne for use will pass through the saine, andbe l `carried off on the inclined board G; while the other i hominywhichisto he used to pass through and fall upon the inclined hopper-sha1)ed-conductorH;
f the wire-cloth.
portion, k, of the wirecloth is coarser, allowing the.

' `Letters Patent ,Nof 108,036, dated October 4, 1870.
. IMPROVEMENTIN HOMINV'MILLS.
.lhe` `Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
- e +Mw- ".he hulls and other substances in the corn passes and dust, which necessarily accompany the bominy,
through the screen, lout of the e'nd`of the cylinder, while the hominy passes toward the wing of the fan,
` and out through the hc es 'i c' in the cylinder, and falls in the spout K completely finished.
-The screen E and cylinder I are revolved by means of a belt,'p, passing-.around a pulley, r, on the crank- Vshaft b, and around the cylinder, it'being also turned once around a-pnlley, s, on the end of the shaft f of the revolving screen. v
Thefan J is revolved independently by a belt,- conneet-luga pulley, t, on the shaft a, witha pulley, c, on
the end ofthe fan-shaft. This fan-shaft has its bearings and revolvesin suitablcjournal-boxes inthe frame A, while the cylinder I has its bearings and revolves upon the fan-slmft.' l rlhe cylinderandfan may be revolved in the same or in opposite directions, as may be deemed most advantageous. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, -\V hat I claim` as new, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent, is- 1 1..-lhe triangular. knives D, when providedwith a hexagonal rise onthe sides, and centralopenings,'substantiallyas set forth.
2. A'lhecombination of the cylinder G, having on Vits inner surface a. series of' sharp, diagonal, or' winding ridges, ,and the triangular knives D, constructed Vas described, revolving upon 4one shaft, all substantially as'and for the.purposes herein set forth.
3. The revolving cylinder I, provided with with the buckets a In and holes t' @in combination with the fan J, revolving within and independently of the cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination ofthe' cylinder G,'knives D, screen E, cylinder I, and fan J, all constructed'and arranged as described, to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
I1n testimony that `I claim the, foregoing, 1 1 have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of July, 1870.
