UHARLES HEMJE, OF NEVT YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HENRY BESTE, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHIPS.
Y Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 174,675dated March 14, 1876; application tiled February 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern y Be it knownvthat I, CHARLES HEMJE, of New York, in the county ot' New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Gonstruction of Ships; and I do hereby decla-re that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to wooden vessels, and especially those 'ot' the centerfboard class, which are apt to hogg in course ot' time, and thereby decrease their sailing qualities, as well as render them unsafe; and the object of my invention is to do away with the extra wooden keelsons now used in such cases, which interfere too much with the stowing capacity of the vessel. v
To this end the nature of my invention consists in providing the ordinary wooden keelson or keelsons with metallic plates and angle-irons along its sides, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section.
A represents the ordinary wooden keelson, on each side of which, for such length as may be required, are run one, two, or more thicknesses ot'vmetal plates, B, placed so as to break joints, and riveted together so as to form, as it were, one plate when nished.
In order to give additional strength and stiffness, anglearms O C are riveted to the plates B, either at the topl or bottom, or both, it' necessary, and the whole is then fastened to the sides ot' the keelson A by suitable bolts or fastenings a. Additional bolts b may be put through the floor-timbers D into the lower angle-irons, and riveted or screwed to the latter, thereby giving still more strength.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe angle-irons O, in combination with the metal plates B and keelson A, constructed and arranged as and for the purposes herein set forth.'
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afx my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
CHARLES HEMJE.
