A further object is to provide a boot and shoe last mold wherein a vent pipe is disposed upwardly within the sand core and having communication at its lower end with the atmosphere, whereby to permit the escape of fumes during the casting operation.
Still a further object is to provide a boot and shoe last mold that includes separable tion, the other for forming the toe portion of thelast, cooperating means being provided between the heel portion of the last and the parts together in a detachable manner.
Still a further object isto provide a boot and shoe last mold of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, in-
expensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. i j

Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the soft metal leg and heel plastic last, showing the clove-tail cleat formed on the heel portion.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the soft metal toe plastic last, showing the dove tailed groove formed therein.
Figure 4C is an inside elevation of one of the sections of the leg and heel mold, showing the metal lug secured in the bottom of the sections of the mold, and showing the vent units, one for forming the leg and heel porpipe extending upwardly into the sand core, the soft metal leg and heel cast last that is formed in the mold around the sand core being shown in section.
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 5-5 of Figure 4, looking downwardly.
Figure 6 is a similar section taken substantially upon the line 66 of Figure 4, looking downwardly.
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 4 of one of the sections of the mold for casting the toe last.

In the drawings, with reference more particularly to Figures 1, 2,4, 5, and Grespectively, wherein there is disclosed the details pertaining to the leg and heel last that is to be cast, the numeral 1 designates generally the mold therefor, the same comprising a pair of identical opposed hard metal sections, the same being denoted by the numerals 2 and 3 respectively. These sections may be of any particular shape, depending upon the heel and leg last that is to be cast. Upper and lower pairsof arms 4 and 5 extend laterally from the rear edge portion of the complementary sections and as is clearly shown in Figure 5, the outer ends of these arms are curved inwardly and are hingedly secured togetheras at 6, whereby said sections will be hingedly connected together for swinging movement toward and away from each other.
Suitable handles 7 extend laterally from the forward edge portion of the sections to manipulate the same.
The adjacent edges of the sections that are disposed in abutting relation when the sections are closed are formed with cooperating pins and sockets as shown generally at 8, in r'igurest) and 6, whereby to more rigidly secure the sections of the moldtogether in a closed position.
The upper ends of the sections are so constructed as to provide a flared mouth 9 into which the soft metal that is employed to form the heel and leg last is to be cast. The
funnel shaped mouth has communication at its smaller end with the restricted passage 5 10, through which the molten metal will flow as will be presently described.
The bottom ends of the sections are cut out at their inner opposed edges to form a substantially rectangular shaped pocket 11, for receiving the similar shaped metal block 12, and for the purpose of securing the block within the pocket or recess 11 there is provided the tapered pins 13 shown in the dotted lines in Figure 6, on the opposite sides of the block for disposition within similar shaped recesses formed in the opposed sides of the complementary sections 2 and 3, when the sections of the mold are disposed in a closed position. Figure 9 also discloses the pins 13 and the block 12 with respect to the complementary sections 2 and 3.
A vertically disposed vent pipe or tube 14 has its lower end fitted within an opening formed in the block 12, and this tube or pipe 14 extends upwardly into the green or baked sand core 15, to rigidly secure the core in position, and the bottom of the core is slightly spaced from the upper face of the block 12, while the top ofthe core will be disposed at the lower end of the restricted passage 10. The purpose of the pipe or tube 14, in addition to supporting the sand core, is to permit the escape of the gas and fumes during the casting operation.
In operation, the block 12 is properly positioned within the recess or pocket 11 and the sand core 15 is arranged within the sections of the mold, the inner faces of the sections being spaced with respect to the core, so that when the sections are in a fully closed position and the molten metal, such as aluminum is poured into the mouth 9, the same will flow downwardly into the restricted passage 10, around the sand core 15, and in due course the soft metal will harden and by separating the sections 2 and 3., the leg and heel cast last 16 shown generally in Figure 2, will beformed.
The heel portion 17 of the last 16 has formed on its flat front side the dove-tailed cleat 18, it being understood, of course,'that' the sections of the mold are so constructed as to form a similar shaped socket, whereby the cleats 18 will be molded.
T he leg portion of the last is denoted by the reference character 19.
In Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, there is illustrated the mold for casting the toe last, and the toe last is shown generally at 20 in Figure 3. The mold. that is provided for casting the toe last also includes a pair of identical hollow hard metal sections 23 and 24, that have arms 25 and 26 extending laterally from therear end thereof and the outer ends of these arms are curved inwardly and are rigidly secured together as at 27. Suitable handles 28 extend from the forward portion of the sections for opening and closing the same, in a manner similar to the handles 7 that are associated with the sections 23 of the leg and heel last casting mold.
Each of the sections of the mold 21 is formed at its top with a flared mouth forming section 29, while the bottom ends of the complementary sections are cut out at their inner opposed edges to form a pocket or recess 30 to accommodate the rectangular shaped metallic block 31, this block being also formed at its opposed sides with laterally projecting tapered pins 31 for disposition within similar shaped recesses, formed on the inner opposed sides of the sections of the mold 21, whereby said block will be properly supported on the mold.
A curved vent pipe 82 extends upwardly; through the metallic plug 31 for supporting the sand core 33, around which is to be poured the soft molten metal, and the toe last.
A dovetailed shaped block 34 is arranged at the rear of the mold on the inner Sl(l 90 thereof for forming a dove-tailed recess 35, in the rear end of thelast 20, so that the clovetailed cleat 18 may detachably be received in the recess for receiving the toe last 20 upon the front side of the heel portion 17 of the os last 16.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that I have provided mold units for casting the toe and the leg and heel portions of a shoe or boot, in a simple and efli r cient manner, the parts of the mold unit being so constructed as to permit the same to be readily and easily operated. Furthermore, a mold of the above mentioned character can be constructed at a very low cost, and will be 1105 strong and durable.
\Vhile I have shown the preferred embodi ment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangementof parts may be resorted to, With-"1110 out departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a boot or shoe last mold, a pair of complementary hollow sections adapted to receive a core, said core being completely enclosed within the mold when the sections are secured together in a closed position, the bottom portions of the sections having their inner opposed edges cut out to provide a pocket, a block for arrangement in said pocket, 00- operating means between the block and the sides of the pocket to secure said block in the pocket, a hollow stem having its lower end projecting vertically through the block, the upper portion of the stem extending into the core for supporting the same, and providing a gas escape, the top of the sections being formed with a mouth for receiving the molten 1 metal that flows into the mold around the core.
2. In a boot or shoe last mold, a pair of identical Complementary sections opened at their inner opposed sides. said sections being hingedly connected together at one end portion thereof, handles extending from the other edge portion of the sections, said sections being adapted to receive a core, the bottom portions of the complementary sections having their inner opposed edges cut out to form a pocket, a block for disposition within the pocket, cooperating means between the sides of the block and the adjacent sides of the pocket for securing the block in said pocket when the sections are disposed in abutting relation about the core, a pipe having its lower end projecting vertically through the block, the upper portion of the pipe extending into the core for supporting the same and providing a vent, the upper ends of the sections being constructed to form a mouth to receive the molten metal that flows downwardl into the mold around the core.
3. Iii a boot or shoe last mold, a core receiving mold, a hollow stein extending through the bottom of the core receiving member, and upwardly into the core for supporting the same and providing a vent, and a mouth at the top of the core receiving member into which molten metal is adapted tobe poured as and for the purpose described.
