SONS COMPANY, OF WESTERLY, RHODE IS LAND, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE no'rnmz rnmrxne IBESS Application filed May 18,
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the form cylinder may be independently adjusted both rotatively with respect to its driving means and 1n an endwise direction, especially while the press 1s running, so that the form on the cylinder may be brought into proper register eas ly and quickly; thereby obviating the necessity of shifting the form on its cylinder, which i latter must be done while the press'is at rest.
and at a considerable loss of the printing time.
This invention is directed, more specifically, to the provisionbf the two adjusting mechanisms, one on one side of the press frame and the other on the other side of the v ward the other side of the press frame.
The form cylinder 1 of the printing press has the oppositely projecting ends 2 and 3 of its shaft rotatively mounted for endwise movement in suitable bearings 4 and 5 in tlf sides 6 and 7 respectively of the printing press frame.
The spiral wide'faced form cylinder gear 8 is slidably interlocked with the end 3 of the: form cylinder shaft, in the present instance by making the gear hollowand providing its bore 9 with longitudinal grooves 10 for slid- Y ablyreceiving the'feathers '11 secured on the enlarged portion '12 of the shaft end 3 located within said gear.
" The form cylinder driving means includes a gear 13 meshing with the form cylinder 1 The mechanism for adjusting the form cylinder rotatively with respect to its driving T .50 ,means while the press is running is locate of the press frame.
1928. Serial No. 278,672.
at one side oft-he press frame and is constructed, arranged and operated as follows:
The u per end of the form cylinder gear 8 is provi ed with a plate 14 having a trunnion 15 on which is loosely mounted one arm 16 of a yoke, a cap'17 secured to the end of said trunnion 15 serving to cause theformcylinder gear 8 to be moved across the face of the driving gear 13 by the movement of the yoke. A hand screw shaft 18 is rotatively mounted in the hub 19 of the yoke against endwise movement with respect thereto and said hand screw shaft has a screw-threaded engagement with the side frame 7. The yoke is guided in its movement by providing its arm 20 with a' sleeve 21 slidably mounted on a in 22 carried by and projecting from the side rame 7. The hand shaft 18 may be provided with a suitable hand wheel 23 for manipulating it.
The mechanism for adjusting the form cylinder .inan endwise direction while the press is running without/disturbing its rotative adjustment, is located upon the other side, of the printing press frame and is constructed, arranged and operated as follows:
A hand screw shaft 24 has a screw-threaded engagement with the side frame 6 and is rotatively interlocked with the hub 25 of a yoke, the arm 26 of which isrotatively interlocked with the form cylinder shaft end 2. The yoke is guided in its movements by providing itsarm 27 with a sleeve 28.slidably engaged with a pin 29 carried by and projecting from the side frame 6. The hand shaft 24 is provided with a suitable hand wheel 30 for manipulating it.
From the above descriptioh it will be seen thati the' formrylinder shaft'maybe' rotativelyfadjustable with respect to 1ts driving means by moving the form cylinder. ear 8 across the face of the driving gear 3 y the manipulation of the hand screw shaft 18 atoneside of the press frame. It wilFalso be seen that the endwise adjustmentof the cylinder can'be provided for by the mani ulation of thehand screw shaft24 at the ot er side 4 It is evident'thatvariouschanges ma be resorted to in the construction, form an arrangement of the; several parts without dev for moving the form cylinder gear across the parting from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is 1. In a rotary printing press, a form cylinder, its spiral gear, a driving gear meshing therewith, andv manually operated mechanisms located on opposite sides of the press for moving the form cylinder gear across the face of its driving gear to adjust the rotative position of the form cylinder and for adjusting the form cylinder endwise without changing the position of the form cylinder gear.
ably interlocked with said shaft, a driving gear meshing with said form cylinder gear,-
and manually operated mechanisms located on opposite sides of the press for moving the form cylinder gear across the face of its driving gear to adjust the rotative position of the form cylinder and for adjusting the form cylinder endwise without changing the position of the form cylinder gear.
3. In a rotary printing press, a form cylinder, its shaft, a form cylinder spiral gear slidably interlockedwith said shaft, a driving gear meshing with said form cylinder gear, yokes connected to the form cylinder gear and shaft respectively, and hand screw shafts located on opposite sides of the press and connected to their respective yokes for moving the form cylinder gear across the face of its driving gear to adjust the rotative position of the form cylinder and for adjusting the form cylinder endwise without changing the position of the form cylinder gear.
4. In a rotary printing press, form cylinder, its shaft, a form cylinder spiral gear slidablyinterlocked with said shaft, a driving gear meshing with said form cylindergear, yokes connected to the form cylinder gear and shaft respectively, a hand screw shaft rotatably interlocked with one of said yokes and having a screw-threaded engagement' with the frame at one'side of the press face of its driving gear to adjust the rotative position of the form cylinder with respect to said driving gear and another hand shaft rotatively mounted in the other yoke on the opposite side of the press and having a screw-threaded engagement with the frame for ad ust-ing the cylinder endwise without changing the position of the form cylinder gear.
my invention, I have signed my name this 16th day of May, A. D. 1928.
