IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 74,54 1, dated March 7, 1876; application filed December 29, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANZ KUEHNE, of Austin, in the county of Travisand State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Iin provement in Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 represents a paper blank ready for folding into a box. Fig. 2 is the blank partially folded; and Fig. 3 is a representation of the folded box, showing the tongue as tucked into the slits.

The dotted lines. in Fig. 1 indicate impressions or slight cuts to facilitate the bending of the paper'into the shape of a box. The solid lines 1 2 represent clear cuts through the paper to permit folding the sections 1) 10 inwardly to form the ends of the box when the side pieces 7 r are turned up on lines 6 6. The slit a b is made to correspond with the V opposite tongue at c d, which is formed by the cuts at c d and c f. The pieces} and m must be folded over outwardly, so that the, tongue 01 6 will pass through the slit a b when the sides are folded at 5 6,-and, when through,

the pieces l and m can be straightened out again,and thus retain the tongue in place. The slits "i k and g h are made to correspond with the tongue 0, and when the parts A B are folded over at the dotted lines 3 and 4, the tongue 0 is to be'passed outwardly through the slit 6 k, and again returned through slit g h, so that when these folds are made the end of tongue 0 will be concealed and protected frominjury, and the box will have beencompleted, as shown in Fig. 3.

I claim as my invention As a new article of manufacture, the box herein described, made from a single piece cut blank, consisting of a principal or body portion, which forms, in folding, the sides of the box, and from which project correspondingly attached top and bottom flap-pieces opposite- ]y located, and intermediate locking straps or tongues; the entire blank being folded along the dotted lines, and the tongue-pieces d c and 0, passed through their corresponding slits a b, 2' is, and g it, look and complete the box, substantially as herein described.
