UNITED STATES TERENCE DEVINE, JE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT m PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,214, dated February 8, 1876; application filed December s, 1815.-
To all whom it may concern box that may be readily and securely closed.
without requiring pasting; and it consists of a box made from a blank of one continuous piece, with central closing tongues and folding side flaps symmetrically thereto. The top of the box is made of double sections to be locked by the tongues. 1
In the drawing, A represents the blank of which my paper box is made. The blank is made of one continuous piece of paper, with a central section, a, provided with longitudinally-extending tongues a, and symmetrical side parts, that form the sides and top walls of the box. The sectionsb of the blank adjoining the oentral part a form the longer side walls, and are made with end flaps d, that fold to the inside of the box along the shorter sides formed by the tongues a, to stiffen thereby the corners. The uppermost sections 6 form the double top of the box, and are recessed in corresponding manner. upper top section 6 are of semicircular shape, and those of the lower top section provided The recesses-e of the with lateral bridge-pieces f, through which the tongues are'slipped, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to lock the top flaps, and thereby the whole box, securely in closed position. The recesses are made of semicircular shape to admit the easier slipping through of the tongues, which pass through the bridge-pieces of the lower section, and out at the recesses of the upper section, binding them rigidly without the use of glue and paste, and admitting the easy opening and closing of the box, as required.
' The box may-be printed in any suitable manner on the face and side parts, forming a neat and secure inclosure for letter-paper, candies,
and other articles.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent' a a 1. 'Theimproved paper box herein described, composed of the central section a, provided with longitudinal tongues 00, the side section b, having end flapsd, and the double top sec- I tions 6, having recesses c, and bridge-pieces f, all constructed substantially as herein set forth, from a blank of oneilcontinuous piece of paper to avoid pastingiirgluing. 1 v
2. The combination of tljie central tongues with the recessed top sections, of which-the lower one has retaining bridge-pieces to lock the parts securely together, substantially as specified.
