GRECO, F SAN JOSE, GAFORNIA BOX Application filed March 29, 1958, Serial No. 265,724. Renewed December 20. 1929.
This invention relates particularly to that type of box commonly used in gathering fruits and Vegetables in the orchard and on the ranch. This type of box must be ,strong and durable and sufficiently rigid in construction to withstand considerable rough usage, ane is somewhat. bulky in size. Since their use is seasonal they must be stored for comparatively long periods of time, and a great amount of room is required for storing them in large numbers.
It is one object of the present invention to provide a box of the character indicated that can be readily collapsed so that it will occupy but a small amount of space When not in use.
It is another object of the invention to provide a box of the character indicated that may be quickly and easily collapsed or set up for use, and one that will be simple in construction, economical to manufacture, strong, durable, and highly efficient in its practical application.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective vien7 of a box en'ibodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the box when collapsed.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section at 3 3, Figure 1,
Figure 4 is an enlarged section at 4 4, Figure 1.
Figure 5 is an enlarged section at 5 5, Figure 1.
Figure 6 is an enlarged section at 6 6, Figure 1.
Figure 7 is an end View of the box when collapsed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, I show at 1 the bot-tom member of the box, on which are mounted the two sides E2 and 3 by means of hinges as 4. These sides are a little shorter than the bottom upon which they are mounted so that the ends 5 and 6 will overlap them as shown.
The vend 5, when upright, engages the bottom of the box and extends the full Width thereof. It is mounted on the bottom by means of hinges 7, and these hinges 7 are so formed and mounted as to present rigidly upstanding parts 8 with the pivot pin at their upper ends as indicated at 9. By means of this construction the end 5 is held in spaced relation to the bottom when folded over upon the same, and this is an important feature because in collapsing the box the two sides are folded down upon the bottom and then the ends are collapsed upon them. This feature is clearly shown in Figure 3 where the sides 2 and 8 are shown as provided with notches as 10 and 11 to accommodate 'the hinge 7.
Mounted upon each end of the part 5 is a metal strip 12 bent at right angles to form a flange 13 lying in the plane of the surface of the end upon which it is mounted and adapted to overlap the corresponding end of the adjacent side when the box is set up. Along the inner side of the end 5 and at its upper edge is mount-ed a strip 14 which forms, with the flange 13, a socket 15 to receive the adjacent end of the adjacent side.
At 16 is shown a bar mounted on the upper and inner edge of strip 14 by means of hinges as 17. This bar is sufficient-ly long to overlap and seat upon the sides 2 and 3 as shown in Figure 1, and is provided with eyes as 18 on its inner Iedge adapted to receive hooks as 19 mounted on the adjacent sides 2 and 3.
Inasmuch as the two ends are identical in construction the corresponding parts upon the opposite end of the box are indicated by similar numerals followed by the letter a.
When the box is prepared for use it presents a solid exterior Without openings of any kind Where the sides, ends and bottom join. The interengaging sides, ends and bottom and top bars 16, 16, with the fastenings, provides a rigid construction that is as durable as the ordinary nailed box. By unfastening the hooks 19, 19a, the sides of the box may be laid down as shown in Figure 3, and the ends and end bars folded upon them to form a compact package that requires but little room for storage or transportation.
Itis to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described but one specific embodiment of the invention, changes in form, construction, and method of assembly may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A collapsible box comprising a bottom, side members hingedly mounted thereon and adapted to fold thereover in close proximity thereto, end members hingedly mounted on the bottom and extending over the ends of the side members, interlocking means between the side and end members, a bar pv otally mounted on the upper edge of each end member and overlapping the sides, and fastening means inserted between the bars and sides.
MAX SHERMAN.
