Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID B. ROGERS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR MAKING SI-IOVELS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,452, dated June 2, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID B. ROGERS, of the city of Pittsburgh, Allegheny county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine for Making Shovels; and I do 'hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in so arranging rollers in connection with dies as to make a shovel complete at one operation of the machine.
Figure l is a perspective View of my machine and Fig. 2 is a represent-ation of the same machine divided vertically and longitudinally through the center.
A is the base on whichA the machine stands.
B, B, are the standards for sustaining the side pieces O, and holding the rollers O, P and Q.
At DFig. l, is shown the manner of fastening together the side pieces, C, crosshead H, and the brace F and at E and G the manner of connecting the side piece C, and brace F to the standard B, B.
I is a crank attached to the upper end of the shaft S, and J, J, is a pitman connecting the sliding platform L with the crank I-seen more clearly at Fig. 2.
K is a receiving die fastened to the front end of platform L on the upper side. And R is a pressing-die the lever of which being smaller passes through the center of said platform and is fastened to the underside of the rear end of the same by hinge joint as seen at letter U, Fig. 2. The lever of the pressing die is so shaped or bent that when the same is extended forward with the platform L, by pitman J J, it (the lever) comes in contact with the base roller Q, and is raised up and out of the receiving die K. This position is now represented in the drawings.
PM is the "top piece connecting the standards B, B. N, the bearing for the set screws V.
O is the bearing or supporting roller. P, the cutting roller, and Q the base roller on which the platform L rides backward and forward.
T are the boxes in which the rollers O P revolve.
Having thus described my invention or machine, what I claim as my improvement in making shovels is- The use of the rollers O, P, Q, in connection with the dies K and R and the pitman J J arranged and operating in the manner herein specified.
DAVID B. ROGERS.
