Description
Jan. 28, 1930. c. A. HORNBURG 1,745,260
HOLDER Filed Nov. 19, 1928 Patented Jan. 28, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOLDER Application filed November 19, 1928.
This invention aims to provide a novel means whereby a program, a hat, and a cigar butt or a neck scarf may be held conveniently on the back of a bench, or elsewhere.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in view,
which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 8 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an elongated base plate 1, which may be made of metal, the base plate, in any event, having some resiliency. The base plate 1 is attached by securing elements 2 and 3 to a support 4, which may be on the back of a bench or pew, or anything else that is available as a support. The securing elements 2 and 3 are spaced apart vertically, and the se- 65 curing element 3 is placed far enough from the lower extremity of the base plate 1 so that the lower end portion of the base plate will constitute a resilient tongue 5, adapted to be sprung away from the support 4, as disclosed in Figure 2. The lower end of the tongue 5 is bevelled outwardly, as shown at 6, to facilitate the introduction of an object 7 of any kind, beneath the tongue 5 in engagement with the support 4. The object shown at 7 may be a program, or anything of a like sort. A spring clip is provided and includes a U-shaped member 8 which is formed into oppositely disposed coils 9 constituting a foot. The coils are upwardly and inwardly extended at their outer extremities to form arms Serial No. 320,488.
10 received in the transverse trough-shaped sockets 11 of a yoke piece 12 held against the base plate 1 by the securing element or screw 2, the upper ends of the arms 10 thus being clamped on the base plate. The coils 9 are adapted to hold an article of any kind such as the brim 14 of a hat 15 against the tongue 5 of the base plate 1. v
The clip, including the coils 9, has an added function in that it increases the pressure with which the tongue 5 bears upon the program or other object 7 which is inserted beneath the tongue.
The coils 9 may be used for a number of purposes. For instance, the operators finger can be run through them to spring out the lower end of the clip and set free the hat brim 14. If desired, a cigar butt can be stuck endwise through the coils 9 and be supported in that way. A neck scarf or any other soft object can be pulled through the coils 9 and thereby be suspended in a convenient and accessible position.
What is claimed is A device of the class described, comprising a base plate having its lower end free to form a tongue beneath which an object may be placed, and a spring clip comprising coils c0- operating with the tongue to hold an article thereagainst, the coils being extended upwardly along the base plate to form arms, a clip engaging the upper ends of the arms, and a common means for holding the clip on the base plate and for holding the base plate on a support.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature. 1
CHARLES A. I-IORNBURG.
