Description

Jan. 28, 1930. L. H. VERONNEAU ELECTRIC BOIIR Filed Oct. 27. 1928 INVENIR Lows.uvsnouum BY AITORNEYS FIG.I
Patented Jan. 28, 1930 PATENT FFC LOUIS H. VERONNEA'', DE MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA ELECTRC BOILER Application filed October 27, 1928.
This invention relates to new and usefu1 improvements in Water heaters and particularly to electrically operated heaters for heating water for domestic purposes.
5 According to my invention I provide a boiler having an interior chamber in WhiCh steam is generated by an electrical heating element. The heat from the stean1 is absorbed by water circulation from tne boiler through a plurality of small tubes passing through the said chamber. Means are provided for keeping the water in the chamber at a predetermined level.
In the draWings Which illustrat-e the preferred form of my invention:
Figure 1 is a part sectional side elevation of my improved heater.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan taken on the line 22 Figure 1.
Referring more particular1y to the drawings, 11 designates a cylindrical boiler having an outlet 13, and an mlet 12 connected to a source of water supply. A safety valve 14 may be mounted on the top of the boiler. Mounted on a central casting 15 is a tube 16 which entends upwardly and is spaced from the top of the boiler. The top of the tube is provided with a cap 17 having a series of perforations 18 to receive the ends of a plurality of comparatively small pipes 19. The lower ends of these pipes are curved outwardly and fit into apertures 20 formed in the lower end of the tube 16. The ends of the pipes are expanded to form watertight ]011S bet-Ween their outer Walls and the tube which forms a steam chamber. Secnred to the casting and to the boiler in proximity to the end of the tube is the water chamber bottom 21. The casting 15 is secured to the bottom 22 of the boiler and said bottom is centrally apertured and 1ecessed to receive the flange 23 Which supports the heating elements 24. The heating elements may be of any of the Well known electrical types. Each element in the heater shown comprises an inner tube 25 and an outer tube 26. The inner tube is insulated from the flange 23 and is supported on studs or bolts 27 passing through the flange but nsulated therefrom. The studs are connected in series and to a source of electrical cur- Sera1 No. 315,446.
rent supply. The outer tubes are perforated and are secured to the flange te Which the return wire for the circuit is attached. Any number of elements may be used and a guard 28 may be seoured to the flange to protect the wire connections. Extending outwardly from the side of the boiler near the bottom thereof is the bracket 29 Which supports a rescrvoir 30 the lower end of which has a dmvnwardly extending tube 31 WhiCh fits into a cup 32 communicating with the steam generating chamber 33 by means of the tube 34. The lower end of the tube 31 is so positioned that the water in the steam generating chamber is kept at a predetermined level. vVhen the water in the cup falls below the end of the tube 31 Water from the reservoir flows into the cup until the end of the pipe is sealed by the Water in the cup. A centrally disposed pipe 35 extends upwardly from the cup through the top of the b0iler and is covered by a safety valve shoWn diagrammatically at 36.
In operation current is supplied to the heating elements, the circuit passing through the layers of water between the tubes of each element. The resistance of the water to the passage of the current develops heat and the water in the steam generating chamber develops into steam. The steam rises into the tubes and comes in contact With the walls of the small water cilculating pipes, The water in the boiler is heated rapidly by the transfer of heat from the steam to the pipes and circulates in the 1nanner shown by the arrows 37. Any of the well known types of thermostats may be connected to the current supp1y to hold the heat of the boiler betxveen predetermined temperatures. A thermostat is shown diagrammatically at 88. The device is very simple in construction and provides an ecient means for heating water for domestic purposes. Safety valves are provided for the stea1n generatng chamber and the boiler water Chambe1. The reservoir for the steam generating chamber is removablv secured to the bracket on the side of the boiler t0 facilitate supplying water to the said chamber.
It Will be readily understood that many modifications may be made in the constructien features of the device wthout departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What 7 I claim 15 1. In an e1ectrie boiler, an outer casing, a steam chamber withn the outer casing, an electric heating elment within the steam chamber and water circulacing pipes extending upWard1y through the steam chambe1, sad pipes communicang at both their ends with the space between the steam chamber and the outer casng.
2. In an electrc boiler, an outer casing, a tube within the outer casng, a perforaced cap for the top of sad tube, said tube communicating with a steam generating chamber at its lower end, an electric heating element in the generating ehamber and water circulatng tubes extending upwardly withn the steam chamber, said tubes at their upper ends being expanded in the cap and at their lower ends passng through the tube and expanded theren.
In witness whereof, I have hereuncO set my hand.
LOUIS H. VERONNEA.
