AIR HEATER.
pplicaton led June 21, `1927.v Serial No. 200,451.
This invention relates to air heaters and it is an object ot' the invention to provide an apparatus o this kind wherein the steam is employed as the heat-ing medium. f
Another object of theinvention is to provide an apparatus or' this kind wherein the desired steam is generated through the instrumentality ot a flash system and wherein the action ot the heating'inen'iber or plate is under control ot the st-ean'ipressure. An additional object or' the invention is to pi'ovidean apparat-us ot this kind wherein air may be ell'ectively heated with the elimination of smoke7 fumes and odor.
The invention consists vin the details of construction and in the combination and ai rangement ot the several parts ot inyimproved ai-r heater whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device ren-v dered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous tor use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth,
The novel features of niy invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
ln order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation illustrating an air heater constructed in accordance with an embodiment of ymy invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 ot Figure 1.
disclosed in the accompanying drawing', C denotes a casing ot requisite dimensions and which is intersected by the vertically spaced partitions l and 2 providing a lower cold air chamber A, an upper hot air chamber H and an intern'iediate steam cham` ber S. The chambers A and H are in communication one with the other through the medium ot thevertically disposed tubesl 3 extending through the steam chamber S and having their extremities suitably7 aliixed to the partitions 1 and 2. Y
The chamber A also has iii comi'nunication therewith a cold air inlet flue l and the chamber H has in communication therewith the carry-oli flues 5.
Arranged within the lower portion of the chamber S adjacent to the bottom partition 1 is a plate 6 with which coacts an electric heating element 7. rllhis element T is adapted to heat the plate 6 to such degree as to cause the water dropping thereon being substantially instantaneously converted into steam. rhe water drops upon the plate 6 from a nozzle 8 depending from the inserted end portion of a pipe 9 leading from a suitable source ot water supply. This pipe 9 exteriorly of the casing C has interposed there- 1n a regulating valve 10 whereby the flow 'through the pipe 9 may be readily controlled as the requirements of practice may necessitate. l
The 'electric heating element 7 is interposed in a circuit leading from a desired sourceoif electrical energy and a leg t of this circuit has interposed therein a vnormally closed circuit closer B.
fl`his closer Basherein set ,torthycomprises a stationary contact 11 and aimovable contact 12. The movable Contact 12 is operatively engaged with a stein 111- ot a piston 1a working in a cylinder 16, said cylinder 1G being in coiiinuinication with the upper end of the chamber S. Arranged within the cylinder 16 and interposed between the piston. 15 and the outer closed end 1701 the cylinder is an expansible member 18, herein disclosed as a coil spring ot requisite tension, encircling the portion of the stem 14 within the cylinder 16.
The central portion of the upper partition 2 is formed to provide a steam dome 19 extending upwardly within the hot air chamber H whereby desired heating of the air is further effected.
In practice, as the water drops upon the plate 6, the resultant steam lills the chamber ti and dome 19 and surrounds the tubes 3, said tubes being formed of copper or other material which will assure heating of the air as it passes upwardly through the tubes from the lower cold air chamber Ato the upper hot air chamber H. rllhe further heating ot the air wit-hin the chamber l-l is effected by the steam within the dome 19.
The spring or expansible member 18` hereinbefore referred to normally maintains the movable contact l2 in closed position with respect to the contact 11 but upon steam within the chamber-S obtaining an excessive pressure the piston 15 moves outwardly resulting in breaking o't' the engagement between the contacts 11 and 12. This serves to eliminate the liability ot' the casing C bursting.
To 'further assure safety I also find it of advantage to place in communication with the chamber S a blowbtt valve 2O operating to relieve the pressure within the chamber S when such pressure registers a predetermined degree. Also in communication with the lower portion of the chamber b" and prei'- erably through the lower partition l a.
constructed' in accordancev with my inven-V tiony is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and -facility with. `which it may be assembled and operated',
and' it: will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and mod.- iication without departing from the principles and spirit thereof andI for thisreason I' do not` wishto be understood as limiting myself to the precise a-rrangei'hent and for-r mation of the several partsherein shown in carrying out my invention in'pra'ctice except as hereinafterJ claimed.
I claim l. A heater of the class described Comprising` a casing, spaced partitions within the casing dividing the same into a cold air chamber, a hot air chamber and an intermediate steam chamber, tubes extending throughy the steam chamber and affording communication between the cold air chamber and hot air chamber, steam generating means withinthe steam chamber, and means operating upon predetermined steam pressure within the steam chamber for making said steam generating means inoperative.
2.- A heater of the class describedcomprising a casing, spaced partitions within the casing dividing kthe same into a cold air chamber, a hot air chamber and an` intermediate steam` chamber, tubes extending through the steam chamber and affording. kconmiunication between the cold air chamber and hot air chamber, means for generatingsteam` within the steam chamber ineluding an electrical heating unit, a, Circuit for said unit, a normally closed circuit closer interposed in said circuit7 and means operat-l ing upon predetermined steam pressure Within the steamchamber for opening said closer to 'break the circuit.
In testimony whereof: I. hereunto atlix my signature.
