0 IMPR'OVEMENT'IN SPIKES FOR THRASHlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,453, dated March 7, 1876; application filed January 3, 1876.
improved spikes or teeth for thrashing-machines where they will be subject to great wear, which shall be so constructed as to wear much longer than when constructed in the ordinary way. The invention consists in spikes for thrashing-machines, formed of malleable or wrought iron, faced with steel upon their forward edges and heads, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a spike or tooth of a thrashing-machine. The body and shank of the spike A is made of malleable iron, and it is laced upon the forward edge, or upon the forward edge and head, with steel a. This leaves the shank soft, so that it may be readily fitted intothe hole in the cylinder or concave, and may have the screw-thread readily out upon it, and in wear combine the advantages of the toughness of the iron and the hardness of the steel.
The spike is formed by laying a piece of steel upon a piece of wrought or malleable iron, and may be Welded, dropped, trimmed, and hardened at one heat. Spikes thus formed will be much stronger, and will last much longer, than when made without the steel fac- 1ng.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I A spike for thrashing-machines, formed of malleable or wrought iron, faced with steel upon its forward edge and head, either or both, substantially as herein shown and described.
