Patented Jan. 7, 1930 JOSEPH EDWARD POOLE, OF PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA HINGED CA? Application filed August 22, 1928. Serial No. 301,365.
This invention relates to a sealed cap for a preserve jar or the like, the object being to provide a type of cap which will be easily removed to disclose the contents of the jar and will not be liable to displacement while using the contents or part of the same. The invention is applicable to all types of jars con taining a sealed cap to protect the contents from unsanitary expose. It comprises cap 1 which may be rotated or otherwise removed to be freed from the jar and when freed can be turned on a hinge and lie suspended during the time the contents is used. Hinged caps are not broadly new but my form affords ready detachment and is well adapted to air tight preserving ars and prevents the loss of caps thereof.
The invention may be applied to jars of the type in which the lids may be lifted off or in which a screw connection is made with the jar body by a cap sealed thereon.
The invention comprises a band or wire surrounding the neck of the jar having an in-. tegral loop, and corresponding loop formed in an arm hinged on the cap.
The specific features of construction and novelty will be hereinafter more fully described and will be specifically indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention- Figure 1 is an elevation showing a lid released from a jar embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a median sectional view of the design shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the form shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a plan ofrthe jar of Figures 1 to 3.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a hinge connection for the lid and jar.
Figure 6 is a modification of the invention shown applied to a cosmetic jar.
Figure 7 is a detailed view of the hinged connection of the type in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form of neck band for the jar shown and illustrates a part of the hinge for the cap thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
open mouth of the jar or the neck thereof may be provided with a coarse screw thread for a threaded, pivoted cap, the neck being indicated by the reference numeral 1 in the form of jar as shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, or the jar may havea hinged cap resting by gravity on the neck thereof as shown in the form of Figure 6. Disposed below the screw thread is an annular flange 2 which receives the cap 3, and arranged between the flange 2 and the body of the jar is a circular wire or band 5 that is provided with a rectangular loop 6 disposed at right angles thereto, and permitting a loose hinge connection with a rectangular loop 7 formed on one arm of a strap 8 of right angle formation, while the other arm is pivoted centrally with respect to the top of the cap 3 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The strap 8 has a reduced portion formed with the first mentioned arm thereof, and this reduced portion is bent away from the body of the last mentioned arm and disposed in a plane therewith. passed through an opening formed centrally of the cap which is provided with a screw thread to engage the thread of the neck of the jar. In some forms of jars, the screw cap 3 contains a glass disk 1 as shown in Figure 2, and which forms a non-corrosive seal for the jar where the contents of the latter may contact with the closure of the jar, or the cap may be of the form employing'a rub: ber or cardboard disk, and a gasket may surround the neck to receive the lower edge of the cap 3 to provide an air-tight joint when the cap is screwed on the jar neck as will be apparent.
The strap 8 in the form shown in. Figure-2 has its reduced portion threaded through a hole or slot in a disk 7 that is disposed flush with the recessed top 11 of the cap 3, the top v being provided with a slot to receive the reduced portion as previously set forth, and the terminal of the reduced portion isdisposed rearwardly on itself to lie parallel and in spaced relation with respect to the body of the strap 8, as indicated by the reference numeral 10. The loop 7 which is formed integral with the strap 8 is preferably made of The reduced portion is.
sufficient length so that the cap may be readily turned and disconnected from the jar without straining the loop of the wire or band which is fixed on the neck of the ar.
By-this construction, it will be apparent that by applying the fingers to the cap 3, it may be readilyremoved from the jar and disposed ,out of the way as shown in Figure 1, while the contents of the jar are being used. This construction also prevents the cap from being misplaced or lost.
In the form as shown in Figure 6, the same principle is employed, except that in this form, the cap 4 is ofglass or some transparent material and simply rests on the mouth of the jar, The jar as shown in' Figure 6 is provided with beads'at its upper end to provide aneannular'groove which receives a wire 5' that has a loop interlinked withthe looped end 7 of a'right angled disposed pivot wire 8". The opposite end of the wire 8 is bent downwardly and terminates in a loop 7 10 disposed in a recess having a reduced outer end and being formed centrally in the cap 4%. The downturned portion of the wire 8 is passed through a disk as shown. c
A further modifiedrform is disclosed. in
' Figure 8 of the drawings and in this form a band 6 may be employed in place of the wire 5. One end of the bandis slotted as at 12, and the opposite end not shown is passed through the slot 12. The band 6 is adapted to be placed below the flange 2 of the form ofthe jar as shown in Figure 1, and a loop 13 is secured to the band 6 to form a hinged connection with the loop of the strap 8 that might be used therewith and is shown with the form of cap in Figure 1.
In the form as shown in Figure 6, the lid ma simply be raised from the jar and swung on its hinge to hang at the side of the jar, and this form is well suited fordrug articles such as greases and cosmetics. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a jar closure, a band surrounding the neck of the jar, a right angle member havingan arm hingedly secured to the band, a cap for the jar and being provided with a recess in its top, a disk disposed across the recess and receiving the opposite arm of theright angle member, and said last mentioned arm j being bent with its bent portion secured-in the 5s and being provided with a recesshaving a reduced outer end and being adapted to receive the loop of the downturned portion for securing the right angle member to the cap.
In testimony whereof I afiix signature. c
JOSEPH E. POOLE.
